Ships Disappointed in the Diamondback?

Just wondering, am I the only one disappointed in the Diamondback, and perhaps the Courier also?

I expected the Diamondback to replace my Asp, and it seems I expected wrong. The Diamondback or the Courier IMO doesn't seem to fit any specific role. Neither has great cargo capacity, jump range, or weaponry. Wouldn't it be best if you just stuck with a type 6 and traded your way to an Asp instead of wasting money on either of these ships (with the new 10% penalty when you sell modules)?

I personally expected to see the Diamondback as a slightly more expensive alternative to the Imperial Clipper, with great jump range and cargo capacity with slightly less powerful weaponry compared to the Clipper (I don't think many people even consider the Dropship due to its low jump range). Considering the Clipper and the Type 7 are pretty much the only two ships until you get to a Python, which is a VERY long time, I had hoped the Diamondback would act as a median in that long grind to the python.

Not everybody is min maxing. Elite ship portfolio is slowly getting to a place where you have a variety of designs to choose from. And the reasoning behind the picks people will do will rather be of personal tastes than actual technical data.

A lot of people chooses cars based on their looks and feels ... but there is also lot of people choosing cars based on technical specifications only. The same thing will apply here when the ship portfolio will be big enough to be able to choose from at least 3 different designs that do the same job.

Except for PvP. PvP is all about min maxing. Why fly a Diamonback when you got the godly Fer-de-Lance for PvP ? /sarcasm, I hate PvP.

They didn't make the Diamondback for PC players. They made it for Xbox players or new players who haven't gone through the progression yet. Or for players who just fly a ship for looks and feel of the cockpit regardless of stats. They messed up a few things, like the Maneuvrability typo, and the Fuel Scoop being a lower class than the FSD (no other ship has this issue). But overall it's supposed to be a cheap ship that doesn't suck for the first week of playing the game. You're not supposed to want to fly it after that. You're supposed to want larger ships. That way when the end game comes we'll be flying Anacondas so no one has to compromise on anything except maneuverability - which will be a garbage stat anyway with the new turrets AI and low turret horizon.

The Dback is one of the few ships that can probably boost away and escape the FdL.

I read that the DB's boost speed is somewhere near 430 m/s, is that correct ? Even so, it'll take some time to get out of mass lock range, and the FdL will have a clear shot during this time...

We've known the Diamondback would be a combat/explorer for a long time. Only thing I'm disappointed in is that it's a *low-end* combat explorer. I was hoping for a Vulture that could actually get places; maybe about the same weapons and shields as a Vulture, little slower, better hyperdrive range, 2 or 3 times the price. Instead I get a Cobra that turns like an Eagle. Or maybe I should say an extended-range Viper.

That's not really a horrible thing though. It really bothers me to make slow turns while I'm exploring, when I move around to find the next planet or whatever on my list, and the Diamondback is excellent at that; its maneuverability extends into Supercruise. It's good enough at combat to hold its own, or at least get away, so, good enough. And... I do keep hearing people say that we need more low-midrange ships. I guess we do. I sometimes feel let down because they're not *my* next ship, but hey, everyone needs something.

How's it's pickup in SC compared to the cobra? Does it get up to high cruising speed fairly quickly?

It's that high if you strip it down to bare bones, maybe. Including stripping the FSD down to nothing.

Yes, the Diamondback is a 500,000cr ship. The FDL, which costs 51,000,000 credits--100x as much!--and is a pure combat ship with no exploration in its design at all, is likely to make mincemeat out of your poor Diamondback.

Edit: If you want something that has a good chance of taking on an FDL and winning, buy yourself a Vulture. If you want to escape an FDL, buy a Cobra (or a Clipper if you're that rich.) The Diamondback is so that early players have something new between the Cobra and the Asp for exploring, or between the Viper and the Vulture for combat. It isn't really meant to take on an FDL.

I know that, so you admit that is ship is designed to be flown by the hadcore DB lovers or the newbies that will then throw it away if they ever want to play PvP ?

I dream of an Elite game where each ship will fill a niche that no other ship fills... The Sidewinder for example is supposed to be a long range recon ship.

What is min/maxing?

Generally it's setting up your character, equipment, ship, avatar - whatever it is in whichever game you are playing - in order to get the maximum perceived bonus by boosting certain attributes and ignoring others.

It goes back a long time, and I still remember Baldur's Gate players going mad over min/maxing - to the point the game was no longer fun, but an argument over builds and damage statistics. Personally I like to enjoy the games I play.

Thank you! Finally someone who understands how the game should work.

The reason I'm disappointed isn't because of min / maxing. If that was the case I would have bought a clipper already (I can afford it and have the rep for it). The reason I'm disappointed is that there are still no ships out there that fill the enormous gap between a python and a clipper. There should be alternative ships for people starting out when the progression of ships are leveled out in a constant line. Of course, I don't expect to be able to upgrade to a new ship every 5 million, but the gap between a python (which requires probably another 30m at least for upgrades) and a clipper is just way too high. I want to fly the ship I want to fly but the fact of the matter is there are no other choices for me available other than my Asp, or the Clipper. You don't have to be min/maxing to not like a ship like the Federal Dropship which makes travelling extremely long and boring. I for one, do not want to waste hours of my time charging my FSD drive instead of actually playing the game.

As someone else mentioned this move is probably due to the Xbox One port coming out, but TBH there's enough options for starters already.

I am dissapointed with diamondback
Currently I use for combat/exploring cobra its decently armed and it has 23.8LY jump
If I switch to diamondback

pros: slightly higher jumprange maybe +3

cons: smaller fuelscoop (longer refueling)
smaller fuel tank (more frequent refueling)

The diamonback slightly higher jump range vs cobra doesnt compensate the more frequent-lenghty refueling, diamondback cost more to buy than cobra

No, I'm not disappointed because I was never promised anything. Both ships are off of my radar since I can afford better anyway. Though, it's nice to have more ships to fill in the lower wealth brackets, would have been great to have them much earlier.

Despite being cheaper, the Cobra is a much better explorer ship than the Diamondback. It's max jump range is only 2 LY less and it has a Class 4 Fuel Scoop - which a HUGE deal for serious explorers. It also has enough slots to bring multiple repair modules AND shields so you can fly into rings without risking several days worth of data on an accidental graze/respawn. The highly modular design of the game has made it so that any dedicated Trade ship will always be the best explorer ship. So"non-specialist" ships like the Cobra or Asp will always be the real combat-explorers. The Diamondback is a little better at raw combat than the Cobra due to it's slightly higher maneuverability and its better hardpoint placement. But when they are fully specced out for combat and exploring, the Cobra is better prepared and can jump just as far for less money.

I fully A-specced one (except for the life support, which was D class), including an A class shield gen, shield boosters, and weapons. With all of that weight I was able to boost up to 418.

If you had variable wing dozes where each ship was worth a number of points toward a maximum wing size, you'd have a good portion of that. Large ships would be escorted by interceptors by necessity, and you could fly a 6 Eagle wing if you wanted.

There are still patches to come and there are still ships to come and gaps to fill. Everyone is bi*ching and crying 'cos they didn't get what they wanted NOW!

Wait for the next patch maybe corvett or panther will satisfies your needs.
