What I don't get is why those that are uninterested in steam seem to make up a good half of all the god-damned bloody posts in a Steam related thread!

There are a few benefits of Steam. First, in my eyes, I do not have to worry about replacement keys, media etc. I had a house fire and lost hundreds of games from over 25 years of playing. Another benefit, is updates all occur automatically. What games I do own on Steam would take a massive list of sites to maintain. Also, it is very convenient to have all games listed to start in one location. Finally, it is a nice feature to know when my friends are on and playing. These are my reasons for being on Steam. Others have other reasons. As with any product, you mileage may vary.
Unfortunately I think the updates will only happen inside the Elite Launcher. I play War Thunder and it gets updates through it's own launcher as well. I think it's the same for most games that were out before being on steam.
I don't know if anyone already responded to your post but this is so not true. I've been playing Arma 2 and Arma 3 since it was released as Alpha. Both games but mostly Arma 3 have suffered from hackers ever since. There were even days where you wasted time starting the game because of the hacks. Mostly on the populated mods like Wasteland and DayZ. The hacks have been caused by security issues in the game engine and mods or steam had nothing to do with it.

I am really happy about those Steam keys. Reasons should be known by now and i think i am not mistaken that even though Valve earns "a bit" from the sells FD wouldn't have sold that much copys regularly since the launch on steam as they did with steam. So this results in a winwinwin situation for FD (more money) Valve (more money) and for us (more content maybe?).
I even wondered why they did not release the game on steam when it went out of beta but i am sure FD had reasons.

If you would uninstall War Thunder every time they update it, it might download the new one if you download it again. I never tried this method because I usually had the new version already downloaded from the dev server.

GTA V updates come via steam, launcher logs in automatically. Steam actually launches the game better than the official version in my opinion.
Must depend on the arrangements between Steam and the devs. Surely steam does not provide bandwidth for free and some devs prefer to use their own, already existing, pipelines.
I do not need this steam key at all. I would like to have it for one thing: i would like to write my review about game on steam
Same, also I'll be running steam anyway so increasing the number of current players on steam(http://store.steampowered.com/stats/) is a small boost in the game's popularity.

Contrary to popular belief, constantly reloading a site to get what you want from it faster does not help one bit, in fact it makes it a lot worse.
People seem to not understand this, if something doesn't work, don't hammer it, go get something to drink, listen to a song, do something else, try again in 5 minutes or 10 minutes, or 30 minutes.
Whilst we're on the topic of the site does anyone ever get issues when it's loading?

I get this sometimes, I always guessed it had something to do with the routing from/to UK.
