News Steam keys update

Does ED on Steam even use the Steam DRM? I have some games that don't use it. I can just start the game without even running Steam.

I think ED uses its own DRM and only uses Steam as a delivery platform? If not, then that's just Frontier's decision to use Steam DRM on top of their own. Steam does not enforce DRM on publishers. It's optional.

It most likely just launches the launcher, which you could do manually as well yes. There's plenty of games on steam that run without steam itself running.

I don't understand why anyone needs the key at the exact moment it becomes available. Today, tomorrow or next week, we still get the keys minus the lunacy of staying awake all night - I mean, this isn't launch day for the game right? I really just don't get it.

I'm only waiting for it because I did a system rebuild this morning so ED isn't even installed at the moment :D

Because the launcher is terrible?

Been two weeks now, unable to install. Support no help at all.

Hoping that steam installer will actually work.

Every single update breaks the game for me, AFAIK the launcher will remain the same, which is a shame.

Have you tried posting on the forums regarding your installer issues? The community is pretty supportive when it comes to technical issues so that might be worth a try. The steam version still uses the launcher so I'm afraid it may not fix the problem you are experiencing.....

I'll try once I get my steam key, if it doesn't resolve the issue. Note that the last response from the tech support guys was "we're handing out steam keys on the 28th, why not wait to see if that works"

tl;dr
I have 2 games on steam... don't play either of them.
Is this a "tomayto tomahto" thing, or are there any actual benefits to using steam? I don't have any launcher issues, and updates usually don't take too long because I'm at work when they're released, so the mad rush is over by the time I get home and upgrade.

e.g. I read somewhere ages ago that you could play as another CMDR name under steam. Meaning if I get twitchy on a long exploration voyage, I could load up steam and do some pew-pew as my alter ego CMDR for a bit. Is this the case? Because that would be a reason to use it.

I have 283 games on steam, I've played a lot of them. Nearly every game I own and play is in Steam, Steam keeps track of progress of these across my community of friends who also play games, why wouldn't I want this one in there too?

You can play as another CMDR name on any platform, just buy another copy.

1 commander only same account different launcher as for the benefits check the first couple of pages on this thread its all there.

Well, I have 430 games on Steam and it's nice to have everything in one place. Otherwise, I would have to go to hundreds of different websites. Steam has actually made PC gaming easy. Otherwise, it would be launcher and patch-search madness. Companies like Frontier are really the odd man out and they don't really care much about launcher polution.

Nah, I doubt it. Frontier do not provide any way to do that other than buying the game multiple times. More money that way, I guess.

Same here, I suffered a fatal windows issue and had to wipe my drives clean. I can't be bothered installing ED and I might as well use the Steam key when it goes live.
