Screenshots - Spacescapes

Ships are awesome, but let us not forget about the beautiful environment that we are going to be exploring in this game! :)

I propose we use this thread to upload and collect screenshots of the spacescapes themselves. The rule is that ships are not allowed to be the center of attention here. They can however be used as a reference to get the scale across, but the focus should be on the environment itself.

At the moment we are somewhat limited when it comes to the enviroment since we are stuck around the same planet, but let's see how creative we can get!

Here are a couple off screenshots I've taken to start us off!

The only way to zoom in and get a good look at the two moons in the distance is to zoom in on the scanner...that's why the cockpit is shown in this last image. ;)

Cool shots there. Nice.
I am thinking though is space a bit dark?
Just watched this short vid about Gaia spacecraft going up to snap the galaxy and the brightness looks quite white in background. See 15 seconds in.
Is this something we will also see in Elite?
Which is more likely when flying through a galaxy or solar system, a scattering of stars with no glow, or near countless stars with strong white glow?

Lovely shots.

Shame you need to crop out (or zoom past) the cockpit to achieve the best effect. Serves to demonstrate that there should be some in-game mechanism where you can at least eliminate the cockpit from screenshots.

That has absolutely no in-game impact as its just a full screenshot of your current view, but without the frame, HUD etc.

Didn't crop anything...I just looked up. ;)

In the final game there will be different cockpits some with more visibility some with less. I guess the "photographers" will use the ones with more visibility.

Like this one:

I guess they could also create a holographic "viewfinder" screen that's connected to a camera at the front of the ship that let's you take images and preview them that way. These images are still put into a screenshot folder on your hard drive. But this interface could maybe also be used to upload the images to the server directly. This is in the design documents after all:

Players can take photographs (essentially screenshots) from their view ports (with and without cockpit and GUI etc)
  • Player photographs can be submitted to a regular photography contest
  • Players can only submit one photograph each
  • Players can vote on a selection of the best photographs
  • The player(s) who get the most votes wins the competition
  • The winner gets a (in game) cash prize (plus prizes for 2nd 3rd most weird etc.)
  • The photograph (and other user submissions) will be used in appropriate places in the game (billboards, news papers, etc.)

Also, there will probably be camera drones. :)

Thanks for taking the effort to photograph beautiful space!

The planet is in different positions relative to you as well as in different relation to the star. Were shots made in different missions?

No, I found a hidden setting that enabled super-cruise!!! :D

I wish! :p

Yes, different missions. The close up of the planet is from "Supply Strike", The rest is from the first mission.

So are you proposing an alpha version of the photo contest using the forum's polling to judge the winner?

I don't have Alpha but I'd like to vote.

Cool shots there. Nice.
I am thinking though is space a bit dark?

The Devs have said that the lighting depends on the system you are in, star type etc. The single System that the Alpha scenarios are in is actually quite bright-ish but there are places where it gets dark when you are in shadow etc.

So I'm sure in the full game some places will be very dark and some will be very bright with a nice range in the middle.

Oh also in the Alpha the planet and its attendant moons are all procedurally generated on startup and are lit in real-time.

Сosmic space dark everywhere: in the center of the galaxy and in the periphery.
Light scattering is possible only in the atmosphere, so in space high contrast and almost no halftone, no high ambient.

But but for the beauty and diversity of scenery in the game need this small inaccuracies;)

Event though there's much higher density of stars in the center of a galaxy -- illumination would still be the same?
