Why is storage space free?

Surely space in stations is at a premium and as such it seems odd that we are able to store as many ships as we like without having to pay any sort of berthing fees?

Good question - ship storage fees were proposed ages ago, but not implemented. Of course there should be storage fees!

You know, in space, there is a lot of space, also storing ships doesn't seem to need much, just get a big empty space somewhere inside the hull of the station and put em all in there.

You WANT to pay for parking? Its free!!1
Just pay me a few tons of gold per day per ship.

1st: There will be parking fees.

Then fines for not paying the the fees, then we'll be having the ships pounded for non payments of fines and fees. Therefore more fees, more fines and so it continues.

Arry.

Truth? Because the originally proposed systems for hiring hangar space, transfering modules, and paying for ships to be delivered between hangars were dropped from the initial release due to time constraints and are now either out altogether or way down the priority list.

Maybe when the first person expansion happens we might see these things added, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

To Store a ship, you need to buy a ship at that station first, I am sure a ship is a huge amount more worth than a lifetime parking bill for a Ship. So just imagine you want to buy a car and a merchant gives you a pretty looking Key chain as gift. Also the stations make profit if they store peoples ships as it means that the people will come back to their stations and most likely trade or buy something from that station. After all the pilots have a whole Galaxy of stations to choose from otherwise.

Incorrect, you do not need to buy a ship at the same station you wish to store it at.

I feel a fixed per station storage fee is in order, based on size of space required to store.

Storage fees & docking fees, even if very nominal.
Frontier's docking fees if tiny was part of the "Welcome to x Cmdr, you docking fee of y has been deducted from your account, have a pleasant stay."
And with storage considerations, hopefully ship transfers to other stations too for fees and a delivery time

Oh, I can see the outcry now...

"I lost my ship and after re-buy, all my stored ships were impounded and I have a bounty for my murder because of fines I could no longer afford!"

I recall comments Pre-Gamma to the effect that there was some intent to have storage fees at some point in the future. Just like at some point, the sale of modules will no longer be free. Oh wait, that is happening in 1.3! So, there is a probability that all of you that want more realism and more credit sinks in-game will get your wish.

I could certainly agree to a docking fee, assessed when docking is successful, and assuming the docking fee covers any long term storage of that ship. Yes, it should also be scaled based on the class and/or value of the ship. After all, someone storing a multi-million credit Python would want a great deal more security on it than a basic Sidewinder. Imagine coming back to claim your ship, only to find it vandalized with graffiti and missing some modules... Hey, more realism!

Just because. The same as lifetime free ship insurance and insanely cheap repairs and ammo.
I really don't understand how on earth are mining drones more important than basic gameplay features like these.

I never said that you need to buy the exact same kind of ship you store. But It is a fact that you need to buy a ship to store a ship, After all we don't have any possibility to leave a station without a ship. Also you need to consider the incredible amounts of money even a sidewinder is worth. The average price of Gold in the Game is 9,440 CR per Ton, A ton of Gold in real life would cost 38 million Dollars. And a Sidewinder costs 32,000 CR which would be about 128 million Dollars worth. I am sure considering those prices the price for a parking lot should be so incredibly low that the stations still would gain way more than enough profit although they give you a life time parking lot. Also in theory after the Ship owners die, the stations still would have the ships and sell them maybe.

I'm pretty sure if we had easy access to all planets and asteroid belts in the galaxy, the price of the gold would drop down a little bit :)

That's true but the cost of making stations would also lower through that. So Space for parking shouldn't be that much of a hassle, after all there is enough space in space.

Gold is only worth twice what tobacco is.

They might "store" the ships in a similar orbit to the Station, just with the battery unplugged or something

You also need to consider that Earth like planets to grow plants on are extremly rare. So Food and other plant like things should be costing a lot of course.

I am only debating the Sidewinder being 128 Million Dollars as that would make a ton of tobacco 19 million dollars and a ton of grain over a million dollars using the same process. Even a kg of food cartridges would be $300

Storage and docking fees don't need to be much, just there to be a consideration.
And as a step to be able to transport ships places.

This is off topic, but has anyone questioned the price of all goods, especially when considering the the weight of said goods as well. What do you get for a ton of say, Imperial slaves?

Arry?
