Ships Diamondback Scout

It goes deeper than that my friend, looks like we made the papers:

Breaking news here, with an in-fiction Peek Of The Week. When Powerplay goes live you'll find the ship we've been calling the Diamondback is now the Diamondback Scout. Here's a peek at its in-game history.

"The Diamondback Scout is Lakon Spaceways’ attempt to repeat the success of the Asp range at a medium price point. The result was a combat capable ship with good jump capability and was pitched as a light long range reconnaissance ship. After the ship’s maiden flight it was criticized for not having the same versatility as the Asp, but it has seen modest success in the long range reconnaissance, long range interceptor and fast picket ship roles for organisations not able or willing to invest in the heavy price tag of the Asp."

I'm glad the concerns from some of us regarding it's exploration capabilities seem to have been acknowledged and that the role of the Diamondback is a bit better defined now.

So cheers for that at least.

I'm sure I'll keep one in the "hanger" as I think it's a nicely designed cool little ship. Might even do some exploration in it all the same, "just because," or maybe do a bit of bounty hunting at RES or the like.

Anybody know any good stations to find a Diamondback scout? I am next to lave and Leesti and still have not been able to find one. I have been able to find every other ship in the game besides the Diamonback. Getting frustrated on not being able to locate.

Wolf 406. It's between the Lave cluster and Alioth. That's where we ran the Diamondback community goal. If they don't have one, well... maybe they decided they didn't want it. ;)

Yeah, Hamilton Gateway in Wolf 406. Still beta testing, of course.

LOL. I worked pretty damn hard at this community goal, and even lost 4 Million to some CMDR pirates, but I persisted and made it to the top tiers. Even with a 20% discount, I am not seeing the point of owning one either. Maybe I'll buy it and park it in the attic next to my Eagle?

I made it to the top 40% after running 1000t in my Cobra, and another 2000t in a T6. I'm a chronic save resetter so the Dback might still have a chance to be useful for me for when I next reset my CMDR. I don't have beta access, so I don't have any hands-on, but having flown everything up to an Asp, I have a decent feeling for how a ship will fly given its spec sheet. I'm disappointed most in how inflexible FDev has decided to make the Diamondback (though I'm still holding out a little hope), and a bit less so by the underclassed modules, but whatever. It's just a game. When I stop enjoying it I'll find a new (or old!) one.

I'm not going to stop playing over a single ship, but I get what you mean. I think the devs are taking a longer view. And there will of course be more ships in future updates and expansions. Hopefully some small and medium sized ships between the Asp and the Python/FdL range. I can afford bigger more expensive ships now, but I don't want a big ship. I am holding out for the perfect little ship. The DBS was so close to being that ship, and it's very frustrating that it is only one class slot away from the goal line. But what can we do? Just wait I guess, and see what they decided to do with it.

I highly doubt it, but maybe there'll be a Diamondback Explorer edition where they rework the internals a bit and charge a bit more for it.

Right now I'm just trading it up. Probably going to max that rank out, then max out combat, and then take my time and finish off with exploration. I'm making 2/3 mil round-trip in my Cobra, 14 jumps total and stations pretty close to the systems' main star. No refueling/scooping in between either, just once at the stations at either end. Takes me maybe... 15, 20 minutes? (Haven't timed it as I get a little lazy in between instead of just speed running it.)

Anyway... point being, it isn't that hard to make halfway decent credits in this game once you find a niche, but I'm not really a fan of the larger ships. I was really looking forward to the Diamondback to use that in my exploration phase. Hopefully there will be something equivalent to it for exploration when I get there.

I would pay real money for this.

My feelings exactly. Not a fan of big ships. I like them to be under 250T. The Vulture is the only heavy ship I can stand to fly because of the oversized thrusters. And the T6 is pretty light without cargo. Anything bigger makes me feel like I'm piloting a space station. The Asp is well over the line and a sluggish ship in general.

I have been messing around with my other small explorer options and have found that the T-6 and Cobra aren't that terrible. They both are fairly nimble is supercruise and with decent visibility. They can booth scoop fuel fairly quickly, and they can both boost to over 400 when equiped and coaxed. Which makes them fast enough to outrun gankers when you get back to the bubble. However, the under 30LY jump range really hurts though when trying to travel in a straight line quickly. I hope that any future exploration ship has at least a 35-40 LY range with a massive fuel scoop and plenty of room for scanners and repair modules, and of course heat sinks. Oddly, the thing it won't really need is a huge power supply.

Neither will I, and you're probably right. I think you've nailed it though, that it's just so damn close to being awesome but they're thus far letting it languish in mediocrity. It's the frustration that they either don't see this, or they don't care. It's such a small change that would completely transform the ship, though. Maybe once 1.3 goes live and all the people who haven't been following beta coverage get their hands on the Diamondback the howling will be enough to make FDev see some reason, similar to how it was with the Vulture/FdL price changes. :)

This would be neat, though I have to say I'm quite enamored with the combat-explorer concept. If a ship can only do two things, it should do both of those things well, simultaneously. The Cobra is probably as close as we'll get for the near future unless FDev have a change of heart.

I would pay real money for this.

Once I'm up to Asp territory I tend to have little desire to progress further, as I really don't have much interest in flying anything larger. That's usually when the save gets reset and I set off into the galaxy in a Sidewinder once again. My Cobra is currently rigged for speed and cargo, though I'm debating adding a fuel scoop and scanners now. She's running a 2A plant I think, no guns, maybe a chaff and heatsink, 4A thrusters/FSD/coupling, 4A shield with 40t cargo capacity. Empty she'll boost a little over 450. It's a great little ship, but I prefer running her either without weapons, or with the two mediums only, since the smalls are so oddly placed.

Where I'm most likely to get interdicted, in my Cobra loaded with 44T cargo, 309/441 boost, max shield generator, FSD, thrusters, and power distributor. I also have the Red Ignition paint job. I've never been remotely close to being caught in my Cobra and would gladly go down with my ship instead of surrendering to pirate scum (insurance is a lot less than I make in one trade run and I don't front much investment into them). ;)

So yeah, the Cobra definitely has a number of substantial advantages in this segment of the market.

Edit: I retract the former slashed statement. :p Seems I have a little more work to do, or carry a lighter load, or of course just choose another station to sell at.

At this point I believe it was always meant to be a "fighter and scout" and the newsletter which called it "combat & exploration" was simply an error; Mike Evans (who, I suppose, defined the ship's stats and internals) even said himself he never called it an explorer.

And that's fair. I guess the reasonable-sounding (to me, anyway) changes most of us have been proposing just make the ship too versatile in FDev's eyes? Who knows. It's their decision. Explorer, scout.. it's basically the same thing anyway. The latter has a military connotation which fits what the Diamondback does. A light, fast, self-sufficient unit that can map the lay of the land while still maintaining an ability to fight. From what I've seen, unless something changes, the ship should fly and fight very well for its size, and I'm sure it will be quite fun. All I can do is wait and see.

I saw that, do we know if they've changed the description in game yet?

With regards to the DB, I'm over being heart broken. I'll still fly my Cobra as The DB just doesn't solve any problems for me, nor does it have a mission (combat or explorer) that the Cobra won't do better. I may still pick it up and play with it a bit, but unfortunately it won't help me with the grind.

To be fair, he did use the word "explorer" quite a bit. Which was confusing. Comparing it to the Asp and saying the DBS was designed to be a fighter and not a pure explorer. Meanwhile, the Asp is one of the most overpowered combat ships in the game and the best explorer.

This makes me wonder how well the devs understand the game they created. And which stats are actually important for which types of roles they intended for each ship.

I'm sorry you feel that way but this ship is not supposed to be an asp. A maximum jump range of 30LY is fine for a ship that is supposed to fight.

It's not supposed to be a dedicated explorer. It's a combat explorer, it can take a beating, dish out punishment and jump pretty far.

I think all this shows is Mike Evans hasn't really tried exploring. :(

Or combat...

The Asp can take on up to three CMDRs in more expensive "combat" ships and win. Sure it costs more, but its stats are balanced so that it can actually explore and fight and trade. The diamond back can beat up on one AI ship at a time. Any ship can do that.
