Level 3 Scans... I know it's been brought up before but...

I just got back after a 6 week trip. An update had happened along the way that gave us level 2 and 3 scan records for what we did beforehand, at which point it said I had 420 Level 3s.

Well, after dumping nearly all my data, it still says I have only 420 Level 3 scans, but the Level 2s are going up.

Also, others had shown that sometimes you get a "Penetrative Scan" which is presumably the Level 3? But I haven't seen a single one.

Anyone have a quick answer as to the state of scanning? Am I losing money for scans I'm not being recognized for?

Don't know. I've done a heap of exploring, and have 0 level three scans.

(Yes, I have the detailed surface scanner etc)

As i really wanted to explore but i do stuff for credits because this game knows only credits (module upgrades i'm looking at you!). I'm waiting for lvl 4 detailed scans but i hope lvl 4 detailed scans will be when planetary landings come and you'll be able to fly to surface to scan anomalies for that extra buck you always wanted. So yeah i hope this game will rock. If not there's always some other game that might do just that (hopefully).

We definitely need some clarity on penetrative scan, since it's something that apparently disappeared in one of the recent patches. Based on posts, it's not back in 1.3 either.

Afaik the level 3 scans are Detailed scans done prior to the exploration update in 1.2 was it? So Level 3 shouldn't increase. (Im also stuck on 0 since I did all my exploring recently).

I still think the whole scans things is somewhat messed up so I'd personally wait for the Exploration update that we explorers all hope will be released in the near future

That's the thought yes. We think it's a bug that happened in that release. Seems like there's only two levels of scanning at the moment. There's something amiss for sure.

The scans seem to be being reported correctly in the 1.3 beta (mine look like what I would expect), so hopefully this has been fixed.

The way level 2 and level 3 scans are being shown is suffering from a bug which is fixed in Powerplay 1.3.

No, you're not losing money. The display issue has been reported as fixed in 1.3.

The mythical "penetrative scans" seem to be a bug where old detailed scans (from January or earlier) but not sold until at least after the 1.1 update in mid February got recorded as "penetrative scans" and were awarded an additional 50% bonus. I've not heard of any other situations where someone got one.

Some testing claimed there was no different between a system ping and a surface scan without a detailed surface scanner equipped. I haven't tested so can't say if it's true or not. Also why would you assume penetrative scans is a bug, and that the bug isn't that penetrative scans recording broke instead?

Pings pay out massively less and don't give first discovered tags and I've no idea why the rumour that they are the same as detailed scans still persists. If the lack of penetrative scans is a bug then I'm afraid it would reflect extremely poorly on the devs and I hold them in higher regard than that!

System pings pay 500 CR per body, irrespective of type. Scans of bodies with the normal scanner can earn up to 30-40k for that body (e.g. ELW, Black Hole). Detailed Surface Scanners give something like a 50% bonus over that, and allow you to get "First Discovered by" tags, which comes with another 50% bonus. Given that an ELW can give 90k for a first discovery that's quite a big difference.

The presentation of the stats is bugged in 1.2, but the money doesn't seem to be.
