No guarantee I'll be able to maintain this as I have a very busy week but feel free to update it yourselves. This is all statements regarding Oculus issues and upcoming improvements since the last dev update:

We had intended to update the game to support the latest Oculus SDK release 0.6.0.0, as part of our ongoing support for virtual reality. However this latest SDK breaks the game. We’re working with Oculus to try and resolve this and will let you know when there is news on that. In the meantime we will continue to support the previous SDK release and will be including some specific fixes during the beta, for example making sure that the Powerplay map renders correctly to both eyes.


Hi Michael. Sorry if this has been asked already, but when are we likely to see a fix for the graphics when using the Oculus in the new Beta? I know myself and a lot of others are having serious issues with the graphics looking extremely low res, and also the Super sampling not working. Is this part of the problem with the new Oculus SDK you mention? or is it unrelated? It's just you do not mention it in your original post. Many thanks I'm just looking forward to participating in the Beta, but this problem prevents me from doing so, so it's kind of a biggy for us VR users.
I'm guessing you mean in direct mode? If that's the case then that isn't supported by the game.
Not direct mode ... It seems like the oculus slider is set at a much lower maximum res than before OR the SS is no longer working. In either case the max res achievable is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than in 1.2.
It has been ticketed but do you need more info?
We'll take a look.
Is Direct Mode targeted for a future update? I know there were issues in the past, but if the newer SDK has resolved them, then it'd be great to see this. Thanks!
Not currently - there would need to be changes in the SDK for us to be able to support it.
Understood currently, but the way I read your original update, you are working with Oculus to eventually resolve this? Didn't I hear that Oculus are saying that there will only be Direct mode available at some point in the future, if not already?
Hopefully so, but we'll have to see what they come up with.

we will be shutting down the servers at midday (BST) to update to Beta 4. The servers will be down for an hour and we should be live again at 1pm BST.

What about the terrible DK2 graphic quality we are all having? Why has it still not been acknowledged by anyone?
We're investigating.

Not feeling a lot of positive vibes from Michael concerning the support of Direct Mode, which really should be how all Oculus Rift supported titles should be working at this point. I get the impression that FD would rather spend their resources developing platform agnostic features with VR rather than focus solely on the rift.

I'd say yes and no... I chatted with him last year about this and as far as Frontier were concerned direct mode not working was on oculus end, not theirs. They were waiting for palmer and co to sort it. We had another very similar message with this new SDK... So I think as far as Frontier are concerned the issues can't be resolved from their side. Guess we will need to wait and see what happens next.

  • Second screens run automatically.

I get the impression from the OR release notes that Extended Mode was very much a stopgap. Certainly with much of the rendering now handed off to the driver it *should* mean a performance increase from the game... if/once supported.

Fingers crossed.
 
Thank you for this. I'll be honest that I'm concerned about FD updating for the OR. However, I'm new here, so maybe they usually don't say much about it? My concern is from the minimal information given by FD regarding OR in 1.3 (especially when first released and the supposed continuing graphics problems).

To me it felt like there is some disinterest in supporting it until the commercial versions reach the marketplace. I truly hope that is not the case (can't even play the game anymore without VR), even with the short, terse responses to the contrary.

Thanks for the consolidation OP. I'm probably in the extreme minority here but I only bought this game because of the Rift. Hopefully this gets ironed out and soon. I was really pumped for 1.3 but will likely shelve the game without OR support. I don't care if it's still buggy and I have to center my headset every 2 mins. It's still more fun than without. Fingers and toes crossed.

The huge amount of work going on behind the scenes for us human beans to go "wow, cool" is mind blowing.

Yeah man!

And VR is now fixed, crisis averted ;)
