Returning to ED since early Beta

Hello, haven't had time to look at ED since early Beta days. Installed the Power Play Beta, and just wondering how the different aspects of the game other than new ships and galaxy have worked out since then.
Is trading and the markets now working, have mining and exploring meet expectations or still require a lot more work?

Please I'm not interested in any flaming of the game or disappointments that XYZ costs too much or is too boring. Just reports on core aspects of the game and additions to the game since early beta days and whether it's now a good time to return.

Cheers,
JR

Up to you, really. You can opt in/out of most of the facets of the game, so carve your own stea... I mean path.

I like the new shaders. The game is pretty. The Diamondback is an interesting ship, haven't tried the courier yet.

Mining has drones now, and NPCs can spawn. Otherwise it's not much changed. Drones apparently makes it faster if they are used correctly, and there are a few new metals/minerals to find. There is still very little support for it though, you still have to burn bits out of asteroids and get confused about which one you mined previously.

PowerPlay is an overlay to the standard game and allows you to support a major faction for some additional perks. Your rep will decline/increase with inactivity (balance towards centre, basically), so it will be hard to support more than one faction at a time. There's a bit of a distant whine about this from the main forum, a bit like living near a dentists office. It adds a bit more to the mission part of the game, and maybe a bit more life to the occupied space in general.

Exploration has been tweaked a bit. You can sell systems data system by system or page by page. Stellar Forge hasn't changed much, but with the new shaders and updated graphics, there are very pretty places to visit. With the debug cam added you can take shots from the outside of the ship as well (and without the ship).

The core of the game is the same, and FD keeps adding content to it trickle by trickle. I'm sure you will be able to, as many seem to, make any aspect of the game into a grind still, though.

In short: yes, all that stuff works now. Mining will be improved with 1.3 though, given the introduction of drones. Have fun!

1.3 finally seems to have 3 balanced careers, mining still a little flakey but you can make a profit from it and trading/hunting work well again. I feel a few more months and making money multiple ways will be nailed. The fact you can actually do missions for decent money that work is great I'm looking forward to assisting my power pledge with my friends.

Now we just need Thargoids!

Markets are at the same state as in late Beta 1, but niche economies have been removed from the game and there still seems to be some glitches with strangely fluctuating station supplies (this problem was part of a lot of trading problems that arose during Beta 3-ish and were mostly fixed later on).

For mining, there's drones, but otherwise things are like in the late Beta, very simplified compared to DDF and Early designs document.
For exploration, things have not really changed mechanically since Beta 2, but the galaxy has been opened up. Also, ancient artifacts.

If you are comparing the game in its current state to how features were planned in the DDF, then I fear that you will be greatly disappointed. If you just directly compare the quality of the Early Beta to today, then I think you'll consider it an improvement.
