Does NOT repairing the paintwork have any visible effect ?

As the title says, repairing paint is an option when fixing up the ship after a run in with pirates and whatnot, but does leaving the paintwork a bit scrappy actually have any visible effect on the outside to other CMDRs or if you're in the outfitting screen ?

I'd love to see a few scrapes and dirty (fnar) hulls rather than constant shiny shiny.

Anyone else ?

However they seem to have slowed down the paint wear effect, but speeded up hull wear and tear, my hull seems to degrade faster than my paint-job.:S

I was deliberately trying to achieve a battered paint look by fixing everything else separately but it became too much like hard work and I resorted to the repair all button.

The paint on my viper and cobra is certainly degrading, my sidewinder is unaffected and i can only assume it is either a bug or hasn't been implemented for it yet.

I was about to start a thread regarding this.

The paint wear is probably slowed down so much from what it used to be in Gamma that it doesn't even show at all now. I have a Viper and Cobra with paint worn down to 0% and they still look brand spanking new.

FD had it right during Gamma, wish they'd revert it. I miss my grungy rat look ships.

FD needs to look into this. Paint wear when first introduced back in Beta was too fast, within a day almost all the paint had flaked off. It was corrected during Gamma whereby it slowly degraded till 0% and will still degrade beyond that. Loved how it looked then.

I just had a look at what my Cobra used to look like back in Gamma and compared to now. Both ships paint were at 0% and beyond when the pics below were taken. It's such a chore to leave the paint unrepaired, but I kept at it trying to replicate the look of my ships from Gamma. But right now the paint wear is either not degrading or degrading so slowly that it's pointless.

Please fix this FD.

I agree. My Cobra used to be really worn and scraped up and had character. Now there's just a few chips on the corners after weeks of neglect.

Something happened in Gamma around the time they started charging for Wear and Tear and it was racking up a bill of 1000s if you so much as took a trip round the station and back. They fixed that and the paintwork wear broke at the same time.

Pleeeeeaaaase can we have our tatty ships back?

Just got back from NGC7822 ~2800LY from SOL. I got there a round about way, originally set off in completely different direction and went to veil nebula, probably did 10000 LY or something.

My Cobra looks like this

It was newly painted when I set off, seems to have picked up a lot of space dirt :)

My paint job reached 87% and hasn't moved in days. We need to find out what this paint is made of and start manufacturing new hull plates from it.

Brilliant idea.

Paint wear and tear is going to be most important when Iron-man finally makes an appearance. As long as we're all playing risky and replacing our ships regularly we'll never see the full effect, whereas the Iron-man players will be able to judge someone's seniority and skill by looking at the condition of their paint.

Yeah, me too. Need a seperate way to repair all that only applies to actual ship fittings, not the paint job.

I am looking forward to this too. Laser scars and hull plate damage. :)
I think Iron-man is not on the list of things that are coming soon though, but still really just enjoying the game as it is for now and watching FD build a solid framework so when Iron-man is implemented it will really rock!

Wasnt it changed on one of the updates? I remember just after launch my ship used to look scanky, and the look was great, the edges were worn after a few jumps, now it looks pristine, and I have just done 60,000Ly....should be barely any paint left.

Perhaps it should be reported as a bug? I've also noticed that, but never really gave it much thought. I did like the battered look on my ships in Gamma though!

Fly 1MM ls in SC and your paint will show it. 1%=10,000ls in SC.

Its working fine at least for the Asp. Mine is completely dirty and battered after some 50,000 ly exploration and still 27,000 ly or so in front of me.

Wasn't the amount of visible skin damage reduced because people complained?

I gave up trying to fly a tatty looking ship after I kept hitting full repair by accident (which is a shame - I preferred the worn look) :)

In Version 1.3 Beta, the REPAIR ALL button doesn't repaint your ship!

Yay!

Wooot. Roll on 1.3
