What to do with the Orca?

So I want an Orca, I need an Orca...

But I have no idea what to do with one, really stumped, playing around with shipyard builds and struggling to find a role for her.

Anyone got any Orca advice or found a niche for her (other than eyecandy)?

Going to say what everyone else has so far, which is mining or exploring.

It's real purpose will be when we get passenger missions and such. And, if/when we get to walk around our ship ;)

rig for attack? its a great sleeper.

Works for RES, trading and can hold its own in interdictions, would not advise heavy pvp ships but it'll do fine against vipers, cobras and almost all NPC's. (Edit: Can remove armour if you want, thats my final intended build as it currently stands).

As an FYI you cannot fit class 6 shields, the module just does not allow it.
Also 20% discount at Alioth (permit required) - No timer.

The upcoming drones of 1.3 might be a nice match for the orca - allowing you to use cargo space to offset lack of scooping maneuverability.
The Orca is also good at silent running - good hull strength to compensate for deactivated shields, and plenty of room for heatsinks, plus lots of cargo, which sounds like a nice combination for smuggling (which is also getting an upgrade in 1.3)

So I'm thinking an Orca cruise-liner could be converted into an exotic shipwreck-hunter engaged in illegal salvage and smuggling.

When you need to build rep with a faction, you can use the Orca to illegally scoop up tons of Rare Artworks and Black Boxes and so on with drones, then use the nice silent-running ability to get them safely to port, then instantly complete any faction missions as they appear.

When you don't want to build rep, you could build credits by taking advantage of the extra profitability of smuggling in 1.3. (How profitable can it be? I don't know, perhaps you'll be the person to find out :) )

Plus, an Orca is a far more respectable ship than, say, a Cobra. A legit cruise-liner used for smuggling?! The authorities will never see it coming! :)

Thats not a million miles away from what I was looking at; minus the sexy armour of course.

Got the Allioth Permit handed to me today when I docked at Read Outpost, 78 Ursae Majoris while just pootling along on my grand tour of human space. Strange to just be handed it, but then again maybe not as the Alliance seems to love me and even some of the Independants around those parts view me as Friendly, never done any missions for any of them so no idea what all that was about; but not looking too hard at a gift permit.

The Allioth discount started my craving (I was originally going to grab the permit just to save on a Miner ASP for 1.3), it's now a voice constantly telling me to park my Python and take a limo out for a spin in style.

I might just make her a smuggler, she seems to be built just for the pleasure, so the smuggler occupation/hobby might fit nicely ;)

EDIT: @Archvillain: That's exactly what I was thinking 8)

Shield discount at 78 Ursae - Townshend hub

If you go there can you try and maybe post to this thread to support or disagree with my claim about not being able to fit a shield in the first 2 Orca module slots: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=92900&page=35
(Its the creators of the Shipyard tool's thread)

Yeah, have fun with it, I only moved it to my current home base from Alioth via 78 Ursae but now have a craving to tech her up and take her for a spin whilst module sell prices are still good..

Go on holiday with it. Go to my Orca.

Slow clap. Small smirk. Rep awarded.

Got one myself not too long ago, and I found the Orca to be a surprisingly practical ship, fast too. Shields aren't great, with a booster they become comparable to an unboosted ASP/Dropship shields (A grade in largest internal slot). Decent hardpoints, the front large is really nice the hull curves nicely for it and a gimball really get a lot out of it, but the other 2 medium ones are while decently placed, are hindered by being a bit further back.
Can trade reasonably, can be used in combat even piracy and smuggling. (And one day, maybe actual passengers). Quite versatile.

My build is not too dissimilar from the one Alex Brental posted, but more all-round and less trade focused.
I currently go something like this.. but when 1.3 hits, I gotta get me some drones, and on those 2 medium points I've been tempted to try rails, which results in something like this

And yes, it's really nice to look at and imo quite fun to fly.
It's not unknown for me to fly about looking for a good time, while carrying an assortment of guns, girls and booze for no other reason than my own amusement at the situation haha.

Long story short - you can do a lot with an Orca

Fit it out for combat - it's a cOrca!

No, seriously, I use mine for combat in resource zones. With a class 3 beam laser and 2 class 2 PAs it rips most ships apart.

Be warned, it's not for PvP unless you have a wing of fighters for defence.

I just get my Orca out and fly around civilized space just for the sake of it because I like it so much.
I do occasionally carry commodities in it to make a bit of money while travelling around in it.
I did try fighting in it in a RES once, by it's not quite nimble enough for that job.

And if you want to buy it on the cheap, get the Permit for Allioth, and it costs 20% less.
