Introducing the Diamondback Explorer

I wouldn't be surprised if they had developed both (And other variants of other ships) and have been mulling over which one to release then following the Beta backlash, have released both Diamondbacks to appease everyone?

It's no different to coupe/ saloon /Estate versions of cars really. (Coupe/sedan/station wagon for our friends over the Pond.) Different uses based on the same chassis.

It's all good though. ;)

/Edit: just caught up with the other posts above. It does make you wonder what other surprises they have in store for us hidden away. ;)
Good work FD.

Now this sounds interesting. Although I've quitted exploration (for the time being), I am curious to see what this bigger Diamondback can do.

This is more of a variant in name only, the geometry, although similar is actually different. It's essentially a whole new ship and thus it takes as long to make as any other ship would. Basically it's not just a diamondback with different stats if that's what you're thinking by variant ships.

From the other thread, copying my own post here:

Thank you!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

This is AWWEEESSOME GREAT NEWS!!!!

I love it!!!

Buying!! Buying!! Buying!!!

FD...you might miss the mark many times! But is your ability to correct the misses what makes me fall in love with you guys!!

Did I say thank you?!

Looks like it will have a good jump range, but even slower scooping than the Scout. So about 5% faster than the slowest ship in the game? So not a good ship for Fuel Rat runs, but hey it's one more ship that we didn't have yesterday.

Tried it out and fully armed with decent shield, good thrusters, 1 large and 2 medium hardpoints filled etc and still get a bit over 30Ly for a rather low price is pretty good. I felt it was a bit sluggish but don't take my word for it. I don't think of me as a combat pilot, not by any stretch of the imagination, and my tryout in combat was miserable, so any combat savvy pilot should have a go at it for a real combat review. So I'll just keep my Asp - full pips to engine, rest to system and prepare to run if push comes to shove.

So, we have a Diamondback Explorer, and a Diamondback Scout. And an Asp Explorer, and .........

The "military model" of the Asp is already mentioned in the ship's description, I wonder if the new DB variants hint at a the military variant being introduced.

Looks like they've pretty much nailed it for a ship positioned between the Cobra & Asp, especially taking into account offensive capabilities. Can't help wondering why they let people gnash their teeth over the Scout if this was always planned for 1.3 though...

I like it...I'll likely look in to one if I make it home again from my trip out to the galactic precipice.

I find the different takes on these ships to very interesting. People must have quite different play styles if they have such strong yet opposing reactions to the same ship stats. I think that speaks to the depth of options we have for playing and is actually a very good thing.

I have moderately high ranks in all three pilot qualifications, but I consider myself to be an explorer, though not as accomplished as many of you here. Yet I think I would actually prefer to fly the Scout ship to this new "Explorer" variant by a large margin. It has slightly faster scooping time (16s instead of 18s) and better maneuverability. And it would be much safer to haul your data back into the bubble since you can dodge and boost away from any trouble spots which are sure to be more dangerous in 1.3.
