So i took on an assassination mission... and now?

...do i basically hop around between the three systems mentioned in the mission, until i run into the guy i'm supposed to kill, and then try to take him out?

You have to drop into the Unknown Signal Sources you can see in supercruise. You'll find ships there that give you clues where to find your target or try to persuade you to abandon the mission. Unfortunately the assassination missions are bugged and often after the abandon request nothing happens anymore :(. YMMV.

This is soon going to be changed though...in the 1.3 Beta you can now also find the targets in Supercruise too. So when Powerplay is released its best to have an interdictor installed when taking on these missions.

The assassinations are my favorite mission in 1.2, except for the Generals.

You can prevent the buggy behavior in roughly 99.5% of them.

I'd recommend going to one of the 3 systems, and just hang out at minimum SC speed to make dropping into the USS easier. Preferrably a system with government type of "None".

Shoot any NPC that tries to talk you out of your mission until you find the NPC that tells you where to find your target - after you are told which system, go there - no need to shoot the NPCs anymore.

Well, unless it's your target...

is there anyway of fixing this without abandoning or letting time lapse. i seem to have gotten 2 bugged one, yay me

My experience is that once the mission is bugged there's nothing to fix it. You have to abandon it and take the rep hit :(. However, it is possible to prevent the mission from stalling by shooting the messenger who asks you to abandon the mission. But you have to hit him before his text lines have completed in the comms panel. You don't have to kill him, just hit him once. Note that you'll get WANTED for 200cr unless you are in an anarchic system. That is a good reason to check if there is an anarchic system among the three systems mentioned in the mission text. If so, go there and wait for the abandon request and shut him up by hitting him without getting WANTED.

+1 for this. To be honest, I've only got this right twice time out of five or six times, as I hate shooting unwanted (unWANTED? not WANTED?) ships so tend to wait too long, but it does work if you're mean. :) Note that they're VERY lucrative when done right. If you're on the ball with piloting, chaff and maybe an SCB, you'll take out a high-level Anaconda for 180,000Cr in about 2-3 minutes or even less. But if you KWS the guy first, he'll almost always have some bounties too, sometimes over 100,000Cr, so 250,000Cr for about 10 minutes of fun.

I really can't wait for the 1.3 roll-out, simply for the new mission system. I loved them in Frontier as they gave you a sense of purpose and the NPC interaction was sometimes silly but still more immersive than the current mission system. *impatient strumming on desk*

Thanks for the tip that shooting the messenger prevents the mission from bugging out. I really like the missions but was afraid to take them because of the bug and I didn't want to take a rep hit. Anybody knows if you can at least find and kill the alternate target if you are to slow at shooting the messenger?

Or is the entire mission bugged, including the alternate target?

By the way I find it pretty lame that FD was not able or willing to release a hotfix for that. It has been known a long time and prevents people from doing the fun missions.

Same with the bug on the pirate kill missions, where the messenger resets your target count if you meet him after you already killed some pirates. What I do on these missions: I start with USS, sometimes I am lucky and find the messenger before I killed any pirates. If not, and I already have pirates in the bag I stop jumping into USS and go to the Nav Beacon instead and complete the mission at the beacon when the required pirates show up.

Not that this is useful anymore with the new missions being released today with 1.3, but in my experience the alternate target was bugged too.

I didn't mind this bug that much - I only accepted these missions if I was in the mood to hunt pirates, so I usually bagged much more than the mission's requirements anyway.

I'm very excited to try out the new assassination missions - all ready with an Interdictor and FSW scanner :D
