Elite / Frontier Worst Version of Elite

As Styggron posted earlier, please keep it civil guys, banter is fine but we've noticed a hint of sarcasm has started to creep in which can soon escalate.

Thanks everyone,

Never fear! I have stopped posting on the subject! :)

I just fired up the 48K Speccy to try that version (yes a real one, not an emulator)

I wouldn't say it is the worst version, but the worst thing about it is the frame rate

Not saying that it is an amazing technical feat for the time, but comparing it to Oolite; it is easy to see why docking used to seem so hard. It seems to be mostly due to the unresponsive controls rather than any kind of inherent difficulty.

When I played Elite on the C64 at the time I thought the frame rates were fine but now when I get 2-3 ships on the screen at the same time........... whoah...............it's still my favourite because it was my first foray into the amazing world of ELITE. :)

I just played ELITE PLUS on my PC...
It was great. I only played BBC 32k and FFE for a very short time because I did not like the navigation...

This 1 hour session of Elite Plus was very enjoyable but I died 6-7 times the same way each time. Whilst trying to dock.
I was never that bad when I was 16. I was good at docking using the keyboard only at 16.

But at 45 years old. I was terrible. Pathetic in fact.

I also seem to crash before I reached the actual entrance of the station. But it's an old game so I won't criticize it too much. It was ahead of it's time.

I hope docking will be a little easier in the new Elite.
Hopefully I'll be using a mouse or a joystick with the new version.

I've only ever played the C64 version originally, as well as Oolite and it's recently that I tried a reconstruction of Elite : First Encounter and I thought it was pretty bad by comparision.

Even the updated full colour graphics didn't do it justice.

Not all the buttons on the dashboard worked the way they are supposed to.

Although, I'm sure if they did with this, what was done with Classic Elite to make Oolite.

I may change my mind.

Why can't they?

I have also realised that Classic Elite is only one of the earlier versions of Elite and I have ben using that term to describe any version of Elite that isn't Frontier and First Encounters.

Sorry, my bad.

RE: Combat in Elite: Plus

I dislike Elite Plus. The rotation of the NPC ships seemed to use a different (and simpler) algorithm compared to other versions and it just felt wrong. As far as I could tell they just rotate around absolute axes instead of pitching and rolling around relative to their own orientation like the player does. The graphics are also ugly.

While I didn't mind the graphics in MCGA mode on my DOS-based computer, the AI of the enemy ships in Elite: Plus was definitely a downgrade from the original Elite, nothing like the original. When attacked, for me, the ships would just sort climb and dive in a wiggling motion that did little to get me off their tail.

In Elite for C64 (the one I grew up with), you at least had to chase your opponents. They were much more challenging. Although the slowness of that version is duly noted.

I thought The New Kind version for Windows someone made rather nicely dealt with both of those problems: 1) It provided solid, color graphics; 2) there were no slowdown problems. As near as I can tell it was otherwise a perfect replica of the original. That was actually my favorite version.

Electron Elite was bad because it had no colour, no suns hence no fuel scooping and the planets didn't seem to rotate.

Einstein Elite was bad because enemies didn't explode, they just vanished :S

PC Elite was bad because it looked hideous.

FFE is the best IMHO.

I'd actually forgotten about the Electron version of Elite, crazy it had no suns or rotating planets, or colour - I used to work for a developer back in the day that specialised in Electron software and peripherals (talk about niche!!) and I don't recall the machine being that underpowered, so strange why it's version of Elite was missing certain features to it's big brothers.

I think the poor Electron had even less available memory than the BBC, hence why some features were absent. I can't remember whether the lack of the dual-mode screen was also due to that or hardware limitations.

I remember playing it originally on the C64, and then my sister got it for her Spectrum. Whilst it was a less full-featured game (didn't the Speccy only have 1 galaxy?) there was no flicker, so I used to sneak onto her machine and play it every time she went out. :)

Rather weirdly if you played it on an old (at the time) black and white television (yes youngsters television was black and white many years ago) the scanner actually looked two-tone, clearly not as colourful as the BBC version but still the circle "plane" bit appeared to be a shade of grey.
Your screenshots are from a display that's far too good!

I got into Elite on my friends BBC Micro series model B. Very soon I got my own BBC Master series and a version of Elite for that with multi colored vector graphics and the elusive Cougar ship with cloaking device. Loved them both. I even got the opportunity to play the elite for 6502 processor upgrade with solid block graphics. Also liked the commodore Amiga version too.
BUT I also remember going to a friends house who owned a Sinclair ZX spectrum. If memory serves it was either an elite or elite like game but it was terrible. The coriolis station spun on its axis sporadically and the sound effects were rudimentary!

My first experience with Elite was on the PC. So I don't really have a point of reference. I enjoyed it. Maybe I didn't know I wasn't suppose to enjoy it? :p

I had a ZX Spectrum and Elite was marvelous on that version - I played for hours and dont remember any problems at all. My friend had a BBC with a proper monitor while I was using a dodgy old TV that had seen better days so the colour and clarity was understandably much better on his than mine.

BBC B verson of Elite as ace. Played that a lot at school hehe.
FEII was my favourite version. Didn't like FFE's art design; the ships just didn't float my boat and I didn't like the scripted storyline macguffin.

Can't believe I got to Deadly on the Speccy 48k Elite, blowing ships away at 3 frames per second! Technically the worst version I played, yet very fond memories of it! 12 hour sessions with a mate during school easter break!

My favourite version was the Amiga Elite. I was in college by then.

I played FE2 on PC (without soundcard). Don't remember how far I got in terms of ranking. Probably Dangerous or Deadly.

I Didn't Like the Elite Sequels....

Once I got access to them just recently. Especially, the third game. But I guess they are most alike. Though, once found them on the Elite -Forever website and a online manual with a hint guide. That third game seems more playable and will grow on me once I start playing it again on my new computer.

I must admit that I didn't give it much of a chance but I really hated Elite Plus on the PC. There was just something so ... wrong going on.
Since then I have mostly stuck to playing the Amiga version

Hi, the 6502 second processor version still only has wireframe. They are just faster/smoother. It was only the 16bit (and the 32bit) editions that were full solids.

I played elite a bit on the amiga. It was very........................brightly coloured.

Couldnt get into it though as had played frontier first and elite just seemed a bit too primitive in comparison. Having said that, downloaded oolite a while back and got some fun out of that. Just trying to find a trade route or 2 that nets me more that a handful of credits at a time
