The only time I'll want the game to be open only is if it uses a traditional client <-> server model. Not as it is with P2P now.
I must be in a time warp...You are the n'th person to come up with exactly the same justifications. I wish someone would come up with a new, and more importantly valid reason to try and force people to play with them.
I'm pretty sure your dream can come true in the game today. (Well, the bringing fuel will have to wait for 1.3 to go live.) The fact that it doesn't is not the fault of Solo or Group players...
And yet it is so much harder in Open, so unfair to get credits in Solo. I'm sure somebody said that somewhere.![]()
I don't think you going be able to 'force' anyone since the game comes with three play modes - solo, private group and open. Since the game started with these modes it's more than likely they will remain. All you can do is is appeal to players through 'carrots' to try and get them to play in open.
@ Sikandhar - for the record some players solo mode have a good reason to just play solo and that is down to their connection speed and reliability. This mode gives some players a chance to play and enjoy the game.
So you agree with the fact, that play in open play is and will become more complexe and hard than play in solo mode?I would suggest changing your ideas on multiplayer interaction...at least for this game. Everyone in the game is playing together...and can negatively or positively affect everyone, regardless of Open or Private modes. PvP Pew pew is part of the game...but a very small part. So small a part as to actually not be profitable currently...it costs money to kill someone, particularly a 'clean' player. With the new PP bounty system, this will change as almost everyone will have a bounty. The meat and potatoes interaction will be contests between large groups collecting NPC related 'trophies'.....player PvP will actually be introducing inefficiencies to player reward...for themselves only. This is fine for those that want the fun of hunter and prey play...but if you are interested in the way the Powers work...you will do things in other modes to be more efficient to avoid the slow downs introduced by PvP. Everyone has choices to make!
So you agree with the fact, that play in open play is and will become more complexe and hard than play in solo mode?
If all players have the choice of which mode to play in (we do) and if some players choose to play in Open play (because they like player interaction) and if Open play is harder (depends very much where you are in the galaxy and who else is there) and if players complain that Open play is harder (because players compete with other players [the same players that they want to play with because they like the interaction] for the same targets, etc.): why should Frontier change anything?
Because, in some cases, the benefits of Private modes can vastly outweigh the benefits in Open, and create a feeling in Open players that they are forced to play in Private to be competitive. This is not a very widespread issue and can be circumvented by better CG design or avoidance of some content.
I never said I want to see the solo mode removed tho, if you want to play solo, go ahead. I just think that as the multiplayer interactions and the impact of the players on the galaxy and economy will increase, The ability to switch at your leisure should be restrained, it is common sense for me.
Right now this is not valid, because due to the few amount of multiplayer content, solo mode does not differ a lot from open play but in the future where I think multiplayer features will be added (with powerplay I think we can assume that Fdev are taking that road) Solo mode and open play will be 2 differents experience, at this point how can you not seperate the modes?
erm hes open advocate like u ;pSo you agree with the fact, that play in open play is and will become more complexe and hard than play in solo mode?
Well I guess the fact that there is different modes brought different players to this game, I am one of those who believe in the great multiplayer potential experience that we can get from this game, and i am hoping that I am not alone.

Is this MMO-style a new direction for Elite: Dangerous? Or will you be still focussing on the single player immersive experience, even if that single player is playing in a universe filled with other players?
Thank's very much to you and the FDev team for all of your efforts. One or two subjective niggles of mine aside the game is the one I've been waiting for for years and I'm totally enamoured with it.
We are supporting multiplayer and the solo experience. Community Goals are carrying on too.
Well this is not a complain about the fact that this is harder and more complex tho ( fine, i like it this way), this is a complain about the fact that you can switch at your leisure and by doing this you are falsing the others players' experience who wont switch.If all players have the choice of which mode to play in (we do) and if some players choose to play in Open play (because they like player interaction) and if Open play is harder (depends very much where you are in the galaxy and who else is there) and if players complain that Open play is harder (because players compete with other players [the same players that they want to play with because they like the interaction] for the same targets, etc.): why should Frontier change anything?

Thanks for this great post very detailled.The different modes AND mode switching is part of the reason there is even a game to play in the first place.
Also, the Devs have stated the modes, mode switching and the current fair and balanced system is here to stay.
Don't believe me, take a look;
From the Kickstarter;
*And the best part - you can do all this online with your friends, or other "Elite" pilots like yourself, or even alone. The choice is yours...*
*you will be able to control who else you might encounter in your game – perhaps limit it to just your friends? Cooperate on adventures or chase your friends down to get that booty. The game will work in a seamless, lobby-less way, with the ability to rendezvous with friends
*Play it your way*
Your reputation is affected by your personal choices. Play the game your way: dangerous pirate, famous explorer or notorious assassin - the choice is yours to make. Take on missions and affect the world around you, alone or with your friends.*
*You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) *
*We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will,*
From the forum archives;
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6300
All Players Group– Players in this group will be matched with each other as much as possible to ensure as many human players can meet and play together
Private Group – Players in this group will only be matched with other players in the same private group
Solo Group – Players in this group won’t be matched with anyone else ever (effectively a private group with no one else invited)

Also, MMO does not mean "social" (It means lots of people connected)
Wikipedia;
A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet. MMOs usually have at least one persistent world, however some games differ.
Oxford English Dictionary (Online);
An online video game which can be played by a very large number of people simultaneously .

And this is not because I can ease my gameplay that I would, I (and a lot players imo) want an immersive experience not a game where the dice could be rigged.
It's like you are playing an FPS, you could download a cheat and add some Noclip Aimbot to your gameplay but it is not because you can that you would because you want a true experience, where the fun is. ( ok this is maybe a bit extreme as an example but I think its a good one)
Thanks for this great post very detailled.
But I don't think I am really off topic on this, as I said at the current state of the game I don't see the point of separating the modes, but as the multiplayer content will be add making the modes different in terms of experience, I don't see how the question of the separation will not be ask again.

You mean choice? lol
I am sorry, english is not my mother language but I assume you guessed it already.
There are plenty, crafting, selling your craft, buying services and goods from player, hire player for a refueling, repairing or escort you to a RES, and of course that is all just made up suppositions on what FD could or could not do in the futur, but if you take a close look at all my posts on this thread that's what I say from the beginning, If the modes go seperates, it need some changes, additions, and if there is multiplayer content added, the separation question need to be asked.I'd be interested to understand what MP features you think will be added that aren't already there. I genuinely have no idea, as I'm not that much of a gamer, but they already give you the opportunity to wing up and so on. If you are talking about multi-player in terms of competition, then you may be right, but at some point they will have to make a decision and tell people that that is the way the game will go, and since they could lose a portion of their player base if they do that, I'm not sure you should hold your breath on it.
The direction frontier is currently taking seems to imply Solo/Group mode are no longer seen as legitimate game modes.
Look at the past updates which have all been PVP centric apart from very small PVE additions.
In my mind frontier have spoken and already declared their contempt for any mode but open or any play style that doesn't involve blowing each other up.
Complaining about other players using their free choice of which mode to play in would seem to be attempting to tell other players how to play - or seeking to limit their choices in some way.
A more accurate analogy would be to consider an FPS which could be played alone against NPCs, in private groups with other selected players and NPCs or in open play with other players and NPCs - no cheats involved, just free choice.
Open play is no more a "true experience" than any other game mode - players gravitate to their preferred mode(s) as they see fit and have the choice to do so.
