Asp vs Clipper - The Railgun Difference
So I have a fully kitted Asp and a fully kitted Clipper.
My Clipper packs 2 C3 Beams (one gimbled, one fixed) and 2 C2 Multicannons (gimbled). I had wanted to use something like railguns for the C2s but the pylons are so far apart it was impractical. Likewise I tried a C3 Particle Accellerator Cannon, and while it was great when it hits, the key word is "When" (again, the position on the pylon makes this a problem when you get in close, and that's when PACs are most useful.
I was fighting in a RES with this and enjoyed myself just fine. But what surprised me was when I came back that same day (with similar large ships to fight) in my Asp.
My Asp packs 2 C2 Railguns, and 4 C1 Beams (fixed). The tight bunching of the hardpoints makes it easy to converge fire.
I was amazed just how quickly big ships went down with those railguns (used beams to melt shields first), even compared to full open fire with the Clipper loadout. Especially useful when targetting subsystems.
Granted the big downside of the railgun is its limited ammo, but 4 small beams is just fine for taking on small ships. Save the Railguns for big fish.
It's almost a shame. I spent so much time getting my Clipper, but I think I enjoy flying my Asp more
Of course, whether that remains the same in 1.3 is another matter!
