Can Frontier please let us change our commander names?

I'd really love this feature. It'd let me go by different aliases depending on what activity I am doing. For example if I wanted to trade I could be John Canyon, or if I was a pirate I could be Blackbeard etc. It would add a bit of fun for many I would think. Surely the ED database uses ID numbers as the master identifier and name would just be another attribute just like credit balance that could be changed given the ability. If it's server resource issue perhaps only permit one name change every week? Thoughts?

EDIT
So far we have had some good ideas like commander name slots that you can change out, commander name changes that cost money or commander name changes that you can only do very infrequently (weeks or months)

You can change your name as often as you like, you just need to clear your save.

Character names not changing are to encourage personal responsibility for your actions.

Plus FD want to avoid all the rude, suggestive, sexist, anythingelseist, trademarked, etc., etc., names that would appear. I don't know what happens now, but the kickstarters had to get their names vetted by FD in advance.

I do not want FD to be wasting valuable time vetting silly names that could be used to further the game. Eventually, what they should probably do is have a moderation process where players who are willing to do so can vote on name changes and they only get accepted when enough have said yes with a high overall acceptance level.

Hm you have all managed to convince me! Fair enough! :)

EDIT
Changed my mind again. Pay per rename may work?

Clear your save and you can rename. I've done it a dozen times as I simply couldn't decide on my commander name.

You'd get a lot more griefers as people would keep an account just for goofing off. There should be consequences for your actions if you choose to pursue a life of crime, and rightly so. One account, and save clearing.

There are many offensive and totally messed up names that made it in game. And yes, I think people should be able to correct their own stupidity!

It would be a source of income for Frontier, make it 10-20 bucks and only allow one rename per X months. This would prevent griefers/pirates to abuse the system too much if at all. For the first week or so a * to indicate a rename could be added.

Nice idea, but it would make known griefers MORE POWERFUL THAN YOU COULD POSSIBLY IMAGINE...well, not that powerful, but I for one rely on knowing some of the people to avoid when I dock at George Lucas

Actually a pay per rename would kind of work i reckon. Good idea! I think I would make use of this and could be a good ongoing source of income for FD

I think you should be able to change your name as often as you like. FD should charge a fee for it if they want to, but really - what does it matter? Accountability? In ED? Nonsense. If a player causes an issues then their (historic) name would be tied to a unique identifier, so it's a non-issue. All you would have to do is say that "H@T_420" did something unpleasant at 3PM yesterday, and FD could search for the GUID of whoever was "H@T_420" between - say - 2:30PM and 3:30PM, and you'd have your player.

As for in-game consequences, changing wouldn't cancel a bounty or a fine - so once again, what does it matter?
