Racial diversity among the powerplay lead figures

Exactly. This is exactly what it is about.

No, this is about you, and others who won't let this die like it needs to. Bringing it up constantly to make you feel like some social equality crusader who likes to cry DISCRIMINATION! anywhere they can. This and the other threads already shut down are the stupidest, most confrontational, whinging high horse garbage I've ever seen on this forum.

Mods, why is still open? It's absolute poison.

I don't see anything wrong with raising this issue, however I personally thought the line up was diverse enough. Winters looks to me to be of African American descent, Patreus looks Mediterranean/ possibly Indian, Hudson looks like a true corn-fed American, and Li Yong-Rui is Chinese.

"Lack of racial types" was not the first thing I thought when I saw the picture.

If I may possibly offer a few further calm words of reason...

I can barely keep up with the posts feeling this thread isn't necessary and the counter-posts explaining why they feel it is necessary. If someone feels the thread isn't necessary or not an issue for them, that's fine. However, for some people they feel it is necessary, and that's fine too - so let's discuss the topic at hand. I disagree with some folks inasmuch as I feel there is a little more diversity than some think, but I'm also here to listen to what they have to say, even if I disagree partially.

I'm happy with the level of diversity in the 10 leaders as it is now. That said I will readily admit there could be more, and that's just fine with me too.

Also some people are posting things that do seem to be designed to annoy the other side and provoke them in to yet another round of why the thread is/isn't necessary. That's not very helpful.

Amazing. Couldn't have said it better.

The art is really good but they are very samey. I was hoping that there would be significant differences in the charaters appearances considering they are all light years apart in origin. Some signifanct difference in their styloe fo dress would have been great.

The differecne between romulands and vulcans comes to mind.

There are great actors out there for inspiration. Idris Elba is the first that comes to my mind, handsome enough to be cast as Heimdall, and perfect in the role. Quite a believable imperial aristocrat I would say.

Dude, as a fellow Scandinavian I feel compelled to chime in: a good actor he may be, but he was a ludicrous choice for the role. Casting a black man as a figure in Viking mythology is similar to casting a white man (Tom Cruise?) as Martin Luther King, or a Chinese (Jackie Chan?) as Jesus Christ. Whether those characters are real or not is irrelevant. Elba cast as Heimdall was clearly just Hollywood attempting to be politically correct or - more likely - appealing to a larger audience through a more racially diverse cast (ie a commercial objective). I suspect it was a bit of both. Again - great actor, but clearly not cast in line with Viking/Norse mythology. And you know it!

Sigh... strawmen everywhere.

Medical conditions are entirely seprate from skintone... unless you mean that having darker skin is like the things you mention above.

That's what you instantly go to? What about if he meant having lighter skin is like the things mentioned above? You instantly assumed any racist thoughts could only be against darker skin.

Done better? But wouldn't that in itself be a form of deliberate engineering to fit a specific template of what an ideal world should look like?

That is what one does. All art has a message. These are the first pictures we get, and they are pictures of the movers and shakers. What they look like matters a lot, and implies things about the setting.

Do you call this a fair reply?

Why does skin color, or the way someone looks matters so much to you?

Amen....

Roddenberry was pushing for change and was from a era when it was a real issue. I think the majority of the western world has moved on a tad.

Well. Some of the comments would imply otherwise ^^

Either way, 17 pages so far means that people do care about this. One way or the other.

Are you guys really discussing about the faces of the Power Play guys? I can't believe this! Discussing about racism revives racism itself! Juste let things like that!I don't recognize myself in one of the pictures and I really don't care... How that matters? It could be all white or black people I wouldn't even care!

Seriously guys....

That's sad!

No, what they look like, friendly, evil, cunning, strong, thoughtful etc. matters for association and to project a characters attributes. Their skin colour does not matter.

There is clearly a black person. Maybe not quite as black to your liking?
A black person? Which one of them looks black to you, the vaguely hispanic or indian looking senator? I'm probably the palest dude you'd ever meet in your life, and none of these people look "black" in the least.
