castAR new 3d device

I was watching that kickstarter but decided against it..............the level I wanted was too much for me at the time I'm afraid.

Has anyone else looked at CastAR?

While searching more details about the much talked about OR I came across this upcoming bit of kit ,which also launched on Kickstarter very successfully.

CastAR:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOI5UW9khoQ

It does seem to have much more potential than the OR with possibly less drawbacks ,giving you both AR and VR options ,meaning that while using AR it is still possible to see keyboard ,joystick as well as any significant other without having to remove glasses.

Hears a quick cockpit demo one of their devs knocked up for the SC forum

I really think this may be the way to go and would be interested in your opinions and ideas regarding it . :)

Ps : pls be gentle as is my first thread and couldn't find anything on the forum yet.

Yep, definitely interesting tech, also miffed I missed the kickstarter, but wrong time for spare money anyway . They are still available for advance orders.... September's a while off though, so plenty of time.

I didn't think it was really that expensive considering I was looking at getting a couple more monitors, the system is a bargain in comparison to the screen real estate you can get IMO, ... stereo 720P projectors, speakers in glasses, very reasonable price from the look of it, the large mat,1 metre by 2 metres at $35, doesn't sound a bad price for a 1 metre by 2 metre 3D screen to me.

Cheap/free monitors for me at the moment, unless FD say they are not going to be supporting CastAR ... :)

typical did search but didnt see this so started another thread regarding it

(My first one as well(sry mod's)).

It looks great and at the moment a better direction than the pure VR of the OR and other devices.
Imagine a full wrap around cockpit and smaller "screens" around controls for additional info or system screens, I really do think this will make a much better gaming experience , I hope the ED devs have seen it and are aware of it's potential ! :).

Hey! Welcome to the forums. It certainly looks interesting but I'm still in camp Oculus for now, although I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to find my joystick whilst wearing is :)

I've looked, and I agree, the potential of integrating that device with this game is immense, if it's supported, and how much is supported....

It looks like the REFID base's they have could be used with the board under the mat to create some custom controls that would feedback through to the game as well, that and a combination of a reflective surface on the control/switch would make a very customisable and cheap add-ons, (considering the Saitek Flight sim type extra gauge)s. They could probably replicate most of the cockpit if they chose to provide a nice mixture of reality and virtual...

Fingers crossed DB agrees when he sees it, then it may get fast tracked ;-)

I haven't seen what hardware you would need to run a big setup, (multiple mats) on that system, it would be nice to know beforehand, but it's on the wish list, (along with all the other upgrades it may require)

I need to strongly consider CastAR as I dread to think what my wife may do to get my attention if I am wearing headphones and VR goggles.

I have an Oculus Dev Kit 1. I will be buying a Dev Kit 2. If castAR provides a better consumer release VR experience and gets major support then I'll buy it rather than the consumer OR. Not interested in the AR aspect at all.

It looks fun, and the more the merrier. OR is a different experience from what I know with the dev kit and seeing this tech on YouTube. I think both have a place in the industry.

I don't think one cancels the other though.

Just hide the cutlery.

Has anyone used this CastAR system? How do the microprojectors work? Do they not require refocusing as you move your head about?

How do two people share the same 3D image projected onto a tabletop? Does the reflective material scatter the other player's projection, or do the glasses blink in the correct sequence for the four eyeballs?

It all sounds a lot more complicated than just hooking up Johnny Chung Lee's head tracker to a 3D telly. I'm just not convinced that the "Any surface can be a screen" advantage justifies the cost.

good questions, it would be interesting to hear if anyone has any hands on with the system.

I can see focussing may be an issue for multiple 'screens' at different distances.

From what I've seen on the videos on this, one of the tricks they rely on is that the surface they are using reflects the light quite precisely back along it's path of origin, so bleed over between CastAR users shouldn't be an issue unless they are looking on close to the same sight line.

Costs didn't look too bad compared to a 3d multi monitor setup to me.

Hopefully there will be someone who can report from first hand experiance, there's only so much you can get from the video's.
