Do we know if the gained weapons can only be re-bought after a 'death' if you are still eligible? It would seem a little crazy if you lost your ship in the service of Aisling but were able to buy back the uber-weapon you gained when serving one of her enemies.
Yes they are currently replaced with insurance.

There's also something I noted early on when this was briefly discussed in earlier thread:
This will naturally lead many people to do the 'faction hopping' as mentioned earlier. There isn't anything particularily wrong with this - and the penalty of having NPCs hunting you down should balance it out as well. However once people have started on the grind for the 'ultimate setup', it would be unfair to change this behaviour later on - so I feel after it goes live, it would be good if we could replace the 'currently' by 'always'.
Currently insurance covers all the modules, including the faction gear regardless of if you still serve the particular faction. Unless this has changed since the last info I read on this.
I'm guessing the logic behind this is, ED is trying to avoid being overly punishing for your death. I think there was a post somewhere about 'we want players to go out there and take risks', or something along those lines on that subject.. essentially to not be too afraid of getting shot up. If some of the gear could not be reacquired (or would require a godsawful grind to reacquire), it would go against that. The other option would be to somehow force you to discard the previous faction gear, for example refusing your undocking rights until you've 'returned' them for 'refund'. There's probably supporters for both camps.
It's pretty common for games to provide means for gathering 'rare gear' through various means, basically going through different quest scenarios and faction grinds to slowly improve your build. Technically this is similar - except in most games you are not limited to one faction at time at the cost of voiding your reputation in others, but can instead access all 'faction stores' once you've unlocked them. In that perspective the system is already unusually restrictive.
I like hoarding things, so I like the system the way it is now. However I don't have very strong opinion on this, so if you were strictly enforced to only be able to ever use one faction gear - and forced to discard the ones you are not currently supporting - I wouldn't throw a hissy fit over it. This however would probably change after I'd gone through 2-3 factions, and started working on the fourth one.
In any case, balancing different faction rewards VERY evenly would then become paramount. You might end up in situation where all factions would eventually be forced to offer the same exact rewards to avoid giving distinct advantage to one over the other. This might become quite the hot issue for strongly PvP oriented crowd.
Also one thing I don't want to see in ED is a hardcore death penalty. If you were able to keep the faction gear, but lost it on death, that's exactly what it would mean. I don't want 'death penalty' to become so crippling that I feel I have to try and play it fully safe at all times - at the fear of losing perhaps months of work.
