100 billion star systems

This was its strength - the characters, all flawed in one way or another.

Greys make the best stories, usually unpredictable. Hopefully some of that will colour the politics underlying the missions, and will really require, in addition to exceptional procedural modelling in missions the touch of good (story) composers that hopefully are with FD.

Especially considering the scales involved (.. well, have to bring this back on subject..).

:)

Star Cops was cancelled by the BBC after just 9 episodes. Shame really I thought it was a great series that was actually set in the near future, and not off in some distant sci-fi dystopia.

I never saw Star Cops, and had actually forgotten all about it.

<wanders off to see if his TV obsessed mate has any>

I saw what you did there. Oh, yeah and the "on topic" thing too.

You know, I was thinking... I never was far away while playing the original Elite, so I don't know almost nothing about the lore of the game. The few things I know I read in the website and in the blog(?), but I really don't know nothing about the Empire, The Federation, the Allies or any other civilization or empire (human or alien) of the game. Could you recommend me a website where I can find more information about Elite: Dangerous universe?

You could do a lot worse than start here - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7595

Andrew does a good summary, and his links will fill in some gaps. The "lore" may be revised in the new game, by how much we've not been told.

The big question for me is with that many stars how would you ever run into other people? If the entire human population played 24/7 you could literally play for thousands of years and never see another person.
If you play in Solo or Private online you could be in the Sol system and never see another player! ;)

But I get your point. It would take you literally thousands of years to visit them all, and only for a few seconds too.

BURN THE HERETIC! :D
Yes the effects budget was about the same as a few old fairy bottles and some sellotape
I couldn't find a YouTube video of the scene I am thinking of, rep to the 1st who finds it!

Some of the Blakes 7 crew are running through tunnels and I think climbing or descending a ladder? To make this one scene, and thus the tunnel "complex" appear larger, they play this sequence multiple times flipped sideways and with a different colour filter over the top! :D

I think it's "pressure point"

the one where Gan dies.

And finally, it will be truly unique ?

I'd be disappointed if there were not hundreds of alien civilisations, progressively generated of course.
I'm of the thinkers that our galaxy is brimming with life. Space faring civilisations maybe in the hundreds. But not with jump ability to easily go from system to system, confined to their own star or stars.

Just so long as there are edible poets I'd be happy... :p

Andromeda?

I haven't read the whole of this thread, but I wonder how long before someone asks for another galaxy to explore (ala Elite)?
Given that the whole thing is procedurally generated it should be as easy as coming up with a new seed though . . .

It's been discussed already, if not in this thread, then on other ones ;)

But why would we need more than one galaxy? knowing that we'll never see the end of it, well, aside from its "top & bottom" sides...?

Since it's a game, whatever could be generated in another galaxy could be generated in the MW as well. And you would need more than a hyperspace jump to reach even the magellanic clouds.

the only thing i'd say would be interesting is the ability to look back at the MW from afar.
