Why powerplay has convinced me to play in open - what about you?

Usual caveat in this sort of topic. If you want to discuss open vs solo, please use this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=145309

Please don't lead this topic to be merged or locked by the mods. Keep on topic. Thanks in advance. ;)

Ill also mention that i've not got involved in PP yet, because still returning from my current exploration trip, and won't be back before the end of the weekend unless i can squeeze in some extra play time.

I've always been more of a PvEer, only venturing into open when i wanted to meet up with friends also playing in open. I never saw much point for PvP in ED. Piracy isn't my thing. I don't trade (for me, boring, tried it once, yawn), and to be frank, i'm always surprised to hear some people trade in open. Its like sticking a big sign on your back saying "kick me". Combat zones ok, but from what i saw and heard, it was often a case of people being outnumbered badly on one side or another while at the same time having to fend of NPCs as well. It was rare to hear of a balanced PvP encounter in a CZ. And best not get started on regular interdiction in open, with people getting blown up for the lulz, by people in vastly superior ships against weaker targets that provide no challenge... etc.

So as you can tell, i'm not likely someone who is thinking of playing in open... but yes, i am. Why? Am i mad? Possibly! But not the only reason.

Powerplay means unlike with the weak faction system (where you can ally with more than one, and can wing together with people from other factions) I can see who my friends and enemies are. If i'm supporting in my power in my own system, then any opposing power player is fair game. I won't feel like a jerk for attacking them. I also won't feel like a jerk calling on other of my power supporters to go in and gank them.... and if they are in a wing, then it could lead to some rather awesome PvP battles (although since i'm lacking in PvP experience, i don't expect to fare too well... note to self: Start playing powerplay in a cheapish ship).

On the other side, if i'm invading/undermining, i know i'm at risk from any opposing supporters. If they attack me, i know why, and i won't feel like they are being jerks. Even if they gang up on me... its my job to run or fight, not cry about it. And afterwards, thank them for the encounter.

Bottom line, I now can feel happy with reasons for PvP.

And if i may just touch on the open/solo debate lightly here without getting into an argument over it - i really do not care if people will grind away in solo doing powerplay. All power to them if that is how they will get enjoyment. I'll be in powerplay for the fun. If it helps, think of solo/group players like it would be if the NPCs were active instead of passive participants in PP. You and your supporters cannot be everywhere, and neither can your opponents. None of us are so onmipresent.

So, anyone else like me? Anyone else who has been convinced to play in open thanks to powerplay?

Aww... now i feel so alone.

Ok, let's ask the other way around. Anyone who was strictly open now is playing in solo with powerplay?

since the system seems pretty whack at the moment, i'll be trying to interdict people who pledged against hudson and have valuable ships/cargo and offer for them to defect and lose their standing, or blow them up and they lose their ship and cargo.

Welcome to open.

I will try stay on topic.
Drop the Solo mentality and prepare to change it.
Just accept every situation that happens and learn from it.
You will rage from time to time. Learn to get over it.

Open pvp is not fair.
Understand that.
Very few players will attack an equal.
Today, we had FDL and Pythons, 4 of them, attacking only small ships. Destroyin ships leaving the station too.

In my viper, I fight them, all 4 or just 2 sometimes but none fight me alone. Only with wing and shout insults.
When I go after them on their own the FDL and python pilots won't fight when alone.
They avoid 1 v 1 even though I am only in viper.
This is how it is.
Except it and you will be fine.

There is alot of players now in open who are trying pvp for the 1st time.
Some will rise to the top, some will go back to solo.
Prepare to get frustrated with the Yolo crowd in Solo as you try PP in open.
You will see what all the fuss is about firsthand but depends which power you choose.

No, it hasn't convinced me to play in open. Open is for those that enjoy the thrill of pew pew pew, which is fine I get it :) Besides I'm a trader, makes little sense to go Open. Just me.

i am curious, what happens when a Mobius pilot runs into another Mobius pilot that is working for a hostile faction?
They don't do anything unless its in a military strike where I believe Conflict Zone Rules apply.

On a personal note: Nothing will make me want to play in open. Ever. Im Co-op/Solo through and through, any hint of PVP and im out.

nope - I am completely with you. only open play now has its own connection issues where I cannot connect to a wing or even communicate with my collegues GRRR

I always play in Open, but I don't think Power Play is for me. As a bounty hunter I like to be independent and have free reign in civilised space.

Thank you for the eloquent and poetic formated response.

Don't worry, even though i'm a PvEers by heart, ill be going into PP and open with my eyes wide open.

I think my first forays will be in a very cheap craft. I have no illusions about what I might encounter, so best minimize losses while getting a feel for it. I think an Eagle might be a good choice. Sure, weak as hell, but very manouverable... a good ship to test my PvP skills (or lack of them) before moving onto bigger ships and trying to give the dedicated PvPers a run for their money.

I am a casual player, and have not much time on hand for replacing lost CR, right now with the Integrity bug, not making cr in BH and on top of that you want me to PVP, I think I will rather not go OPEN. Open was fun at the very beginning in EVE, until they came out with the digital fishnet (Bobbles) where you had no chance to escape while 40 ships were waiting for you to jump.

We are not at the stage where EvE was many years ago, and I hope this game never gets to that point where doing the wrong things gets rewarded and casual players are being punished.

I am by no means a powergamer, a grinder, or a PVPer, I for that fact hate PVP with all my guts, so the topic of "Because of PowerPlay I will go OPEN" is mute to say the least. I can work for my power in SOLO, or in Mobuis with others on TS and have 30 peeps grinding away to deliver goods and what not.

I disagree with OPEN because of PowerPlay. Yes the PEW PEW and they can catch me is a thrill but there is no reward for a casual player. Sorry, Solo here I come (Group)

Nothing, just a /tiphat and move along. Rules as per the Mobuis group says:

No PVP what-so-ever except accepted by both parties. Or within a CZ when picking opossing sides, and agreed on.

So to answer your question again in a one-liner "Nothing will happen"

It seems you want to try your hand at PvP.
That is good, even if you decide you don't like it. I tried trading, only to find out I didn't like it.

Skip the Eagle for PvP. You will die quick everytime and it will put you off pvp.
Get the Viper. It is still the best for your budget. It is fricking awesome.
Find others like you and try agreed pvp between you. There is loads out there, itching to practice.
PvP is about using your brain and reflexes.
It's just a sport, like rugby, violent but played by nice guys. :D

We only want players in open who want to be in open. That's really the truth of it. It's a game. :)
That's why on this forum you will always see " if you don't like it go solo ", it's not a diss.
We know solo is there for players like you.

It's funny, cos there is more PvP on this forum than there is in Open. :D

I agree with you, OP.

Since 1.3 is active, I had more and more meaningful interactions with other cmdrs than I had in the whole 5 months before.

Including:
Getting rescued by an allied CMDR after being interdicted by three hostile NPCs. (thanks, jou84).
Being scared to death by an imperial courier CMDR appearing right behind me while I was delivering Fed Aids. Turned out he was on my side - and even Winter's acting sky marshall...
Trying to escape from a horde of slave drivers in Zeta Trianguli Australis
Having a quite tough PvP fight in the same system - my cobra vs. an imperial Diamond Back scout
Discussing strategies on the reddits subforums.

Well, it has been some very fun days...
