Improving the Scanner Display

The way the scanner currently displays contacts does not seem right to me. The Scanner is a default IFF and your allies are always green and the neutrals are always white and the enemy is red ... well .... usually.
.
White means I have to identify the ship by scanning and then make a conscious decision as to whether I open fire or not.
Red should means it is an enemy and I can retaliate without restriction.
.
Currently though if I scan and attack a wanted person and his wingman (who I haven't scanned) attacks me in return he immediately turns red on my scanner whether he has hit me or not. If I am receiving hits from the first ship I have no idea if the wingman has hit me and whether I can retaliate or not. A better solution would be for the scanner to continue to display the wingman as white until such time as I can retaliate.
.
What bought me to this was doing a Ancient Artefact mission. I dropped in to the WSS and was preparing to scoop when two NPC dropped in, one in front of me and the other off to the side. I scanned the guy in front of me and he is Wanted and I decide that the best defence is a good offence so I open up on him and kill the unshielded Eagle pretty quickly. His Wingman is firing at me and on the Scanner he is red so I fire back and immediately I am hit with an assault fine. He continues to fire and now he has either hit me or my scanner has finished and I kill him off.
.
I SC out and I am interdicted by two NPCs who are clean so I decide to hold my fire and see what happens. The first one opened fire at me and immediately turns red on my Scanner and I retaliated and killed him quickly and now I have a bounty for murder.
.
To put this in context I have always been a goody goody two shoes and have not strayed over to the dark side before so the mechanics are a bit new to me.

You attacked his (wanted) wingman so he turned hostile. But that doesn't mean he actually hit you. Or are you pledged to a Power and were they pledged to another ?

Are you sure it actually hit you first ? Not just fire at you, really hit you.

I was in a similar situation last night. Took on a wing of two, the lead was a wanted Cobra, wingman was a clean Sidewinder, naturally scanned both (including KWS). Took out the Cobra easily enough, and the wingman turned agro (red) and started to attack me. Yes before you ask, he did hit my shields several times. So I lined up to take him out then noticed he was still clean even though he now had a bounty for hitting me. So I left him alone, and went on to take out other wanted for their bounties. Yet for the next 15 minutes, this one red marker was always on my six, firing away (and doing absolutely no damage to my Vulture, at best he took down maybe one half of the outer ring of my shields). I did rescan him several times to see if he changed to wanted but he stayed clean. Eventually I got sick and tired of him, it was like an annoying mosquito buzzing around my head (lol) so I SC out of the area - Nav Beacon), did a 180 and re-entered, resetting the area. Yes I know I could have taken him out but it was a fun place with lots of security and I really didn't want to incur a bounty.

I am not in a Power at all, just floating around doing my own thing and the wingman was firing at me and RED in my scanner but I don't know if he had hit and I assume not; at least not before I had hit him because of the Assault fine I received. My point here is he was red and if he was still neutral to me even though he was trying to hit me then he should still be white.

It is good to see you had the same issue. I when I first started to write this I originally wrote that he had hit me but then I wasn't too sure so reworded it.
