All Hail Sarah Jane - Mistress of the Minions

Last update was like phase #1... There's still a lot more to come...
So don't hail me, after all the combat AI is still a bit of a walkover right now and needs better tactics...

We are basking in your glory overlord :]

It speaks volumes about the AI that i have to resort to using such dastardly tactics.

She is now going to monitor your gameplay and steal all your tactics for her babies.

Haha, i hope so.

I had a similar experience. Lost shields once in a hi CZ but that was because i was being targeted by 3 vultures whilst taking out a python. Since the patch, I have also interdicted expert Pythons and killed them without taking a hit. I'm not noticing a massive difference to be honest.

Take on an Elite Anaconda without using shield cells. You can find them in SC.

Good luck.

I don't get it at all. Can someone upload a vid of these amazing harmless sidewinders? I am no 1337 uber h4xorz PvP guy, but these sidewinders are basic target practice. They don't even use their power distributor, barely shoot at you, havent caught them doing anything decent FA-off/booster style etc. A viper should eat two harmless sideys no problem. I hear these reports from quite a few folks so it is really confusing me...
I did get it on video and it will be part of my video series in my sig block. I've killed lots of sideys in the past in RES or NAV points. Yet, I couldn't keep these in front of me long enough for a KWS scan. I fully admit I am crap at combat, but four pips to engines and I couldn't get behind them. I've been avoiding FA Off but I'm thinking it is time to learn it.

I don't use cells at the mo, just an A booster. Was considering fitting them given the AI has been improved, but decided to try without and have been fine so far. Haven't come up against an elite anaconda yet, not in a CZ, but high ranking Pythons don't feel any harder, and they have potentially enough grunt to make a Vulture hurt.

Sarah, will you be working on these 3 things at all, or are they out of your purview?

  1. NPC behaviour before combat is initiated, so NPCs behave like people with lives to lose, assessing the balance of power in an encounter rather than attacking obviously superior craft/pilots. This has been addressed already but there are still too many mostly harmless shieldless Sidewindersshouting "Fear Me!" before committing suicide-by-Expert-Vulture.
  2. NPC bugout tactics to try to save their skin when combat goes south. At the point where their shield drops 0.9 seconds after the class 3 beams open up, even a clueless Eagle pilot should be hitting boost at a 90 degree turn and charging their FSD.
  3. NPC Group behaviour, so groups of NPCs realise who is the biggest threat in a many-on-many encounter and engage that, instead of prosecuting their existing target. Especially noticeable in USS where a group of pirates are attacking a trader, and you attack one of the pirates.
[*] A thought: Perhaps the fault with the new RES instantiating too low level NPCs lies not with the RES spawn generators, but the constructor/factory that sets up the NPCs from whatever ship list the generator produces. If Mostly Harmless Shieldless Soon-To-Be-Tinsel is returned instead of the requested Master NPC, but set up with the Master's chatter lines and aggression levels, this would explain the behaviour in 1) above as well as many Mostly Harmless Shieldless Power supporters in Imp Couriers and Diamondback Scouts throwing themselves at my guns in SC.

Pretty significant difference between a high-ranking Python and an Elite Conda. Starting with the PA!

Though the toughest fight I have had yet 1v1 vs. AI was an Elite Vulture. In my Courier, that one was quite the workout!

Sure, I'm not saying there isn't. I'm saying I expected, given the improvements, not to be able to kill an expert (might have been higher, can't remember, but wasn't elite) Python without getting hit. I stayed out of his main firing arcs and mostly hung on his tail, but he had chances to fire and seemed not to. Felt like there was a bug to me. All I'm saying is, I haven't noticed a big difference in difficulty amongst the ships I have encountered so far 1.2 vs 1.3. I'm not saying I expect an elite 'conda to be a walkover just because a high ranking Python was :)

Cool, thanks! As for FA off, I think you'll find basic FA-off turns can be learned in a few minutes and greatly increase you agility in a dogfight.

Well I may be introuble then. I took me ages to kill an elite Diamonback Scout, and I was in a python!

The Elite Conda will give you a proper scrap. Stick an interdictor on your bird and find a system with a conflict zone and just supercruise (warzones seem to spawn more of them in SC in my experience)

Ive been hunting them in my Courier and got smoked every time without cells - had to bug out.

Cheers, will do! Is there a sure-fire way to find CZs with high ranking ships in? Most of the ones I've come across are "mostly-harmless" so far...

Ooer, someone has been a student of Design Patterns, eh? Is ED in C++?

I just took on an elite Cobra and it takes a lot longer, it seems to use boom and zoom style tactics etc.

My Diamondback scout was never in danger, but definetly more challenging.

My main problem in a smaller ships is even taking on mostly harmless turreted anacondas.

Seems impossible to avoid getting hit, and you take a substantial ammount of damage...

What is the trick here? Stealth? chaff?

I believe I read in patch notes somewhere for 1.3 that chaff now effects turrets as well as gimbals?

Yeah it does. Chaff is awesome against turret boats now :]

I edited my original for clarity.

I have only found the Elite Condas in supercruise. Havent seen one in a warzone.

But the spawn rate for them in SC seems to be higher in systems with conflict zones.

Long time ago but yeah. The stuff I mention seems to have passed into my working language without thinking about Gamma, Helm, Vlissides and the other one any more. Unlike 10 years ago when everyone was namedropping 'Facade' like it made them a leet coder. Spawn generators were mentioned in a recent changelog IIRC. Oh and AFAIK the ED client is in C++. Look at the job vacancies at FD, and theres a VC++ runtime installed by the client.
