Upgrade bulkheads?

What is the general consensus for upgrading bulkheads? I've been pricing out A grade clipper vs A grade python but the bulkheads are the most expensive. The highest I would go for are military grade since I only have about 160mil. Do people tend to upgrade and take the cost and weight hit or not since they don't affect subcomponent durability?
also if I don't upgrade them at all then I'm closer to being able to afford a python.

Depends on how you want to play. In PvP, it just gives you those extra moments to get away after your shield has popped.

PvE, it keeps in you the fight while your shields come back up.

Never seemed worth it to me. In addition to the massive cost, you also take a major hit in extra weight penalizing your jump range and maneuverability.

And armor doesn't make your thrusters or power plant any tougher to destroy.

I've bought mirror for cobra, and Viper.
With the larger ships, I run when shields go down.

I tended to get military up to Clipper. I did notice it against AI, especially in combat zones. I'd start getting edgy at 40% hull without it but would risk 20% hull with the armour provided subsystems keep up. Would recommend it for all ships that have jump range and credits to spare.

For example a Trading T7 looses 3LY for mirrored armour on my build (25LY vs 23LY). If you are doing a 2 jump route for 40LY the extra 3LY is irrelevant so a bit of defence against pirates isn't really hurting anything.
I also have a combat ship or two that doesn't move from the system I bought it in so therefore doesn't need weight savings.

But yeah, expensive. I've been running a combat Python without any armour for a long time as a high range ship for community goals, had no major issues so its really not too important either way if you can keep your shields up most of the time. Just watch out in PVP :)

I generally prefer military. I saw just what the specialized armor could do when I hit a wanted sidewinder who had reactive armor with my DB explorers huge cannon, and it only did 4% damage. They are immensely expensive though, and if you have reflective, and you run into someone who has a multi-cannon or cannon, you are really screwed. I much prefer military because it gives a good balance. I had military on my courier which saved me during a PvP battle with another player who was also in a courier. He had two A shield boosters and I would have been gone because he took my shields down much faster than I did his. I also see that military is about as expensive as the stock ship.

I upgraded the bulkheads in the Cobra I'm knocking around in after I nearly took out an AI Anaconda (we got down to about 20%) - I realised I had 4% and literally made it out by the skin of my teeth. The bulkheads are insurance (I'll get some damn shield boosters as well!)

I find that bulkheads, regardless if someone is just targeting your PP will give more survivability regardless.

Exactly this. Repped.

You will get drive railed by experienced players which makes it useless but in honesty not that many people target subs in my experience.

I though this too, do bulkheads not just reduce the gross amount of damage received to the hull or whatever part of the ship is hit.

i.e some sort of mmo item that reduces damage by 2hp or whatever its a constant thing does not just apply to being hit in the head,
I do not know how bulkheads work this is just how i expect them to work.
