Bulkheads are completely unreasonable.

Barring the fact that they're often more expensive than the ships themselves, there's no clear indication as to how much resistance you're even getting out of a given bulkhead type. Oh, so mirrored armor provides extra mitigation against energy-based weapons? Cool, I guess. How much? Is it enough to offset its absurd weight, which in turn substantially decreases maneuverability and jump range?

In terms of clarification, bulkheads really need some fleshing out. If I don't have the slightest clue how much resistance I'm getting out of, say, military composite plating, how in the actual hell can I make an informed decision as to whether or not it's worth the weight / insurance penalty? I mean, really. How? How, though?

Someone has tested this - I don't have the figures to hand.

I think the price reflects technicians having to practically rip your ship apart to install everything (but yes, its crazy expensive, and heavy).
Its pretty easy to substantially reduce your ship's handling/manoevrability too with all the added weight.

If it's been tested, I haven't been able to find any specific values anywhere. I'd love to see them.

I think it's a scam. I had 15M sunk in mirrored skin for my Asp and switched back to military before resale penalty was enacted. Between the extra cost for insurance and 1.5M down the toilet when I upgrade to a Clipper is not worth the difference... if any at all.

Targeting subsystems makes bulkheads completely worthless. It's a little wee bit disappointing spending 50 million on armour and then watching your ship pop at 75%. What the hell did I pay for?

Not totally, it is harder to penetrate good armour, the weapons still need to do that. Mirrored armour is only any good against deflecting thermal attacks, so if old mate is using some multi-cannons you're up the creek without a paddle.

This. If you lose shields in a fight you've already lost and need to jump out/kill the guy right now/yank the network cable/whatever it is you do.

I compromised between full composite armour and lightweight armour on my Cobra by going with reinforced bulkheads. The Cobra's native lightweight armour is already quite good, but I have found the reinforced bulkheads worth my while in terms of the mass penalty and insurance increase (which isn't that bad), because even with A-rated shields and two shield booster modules, the Cobra's shields remain very weak (even my favourite ship has its flaws).

This set-up, along with my offensive weapons, has been serving me well, as long as I (like any sensible person) pick my fights carefully. Having that 25 percent or so extra armour gives me just that little bit more time I need to decide whether or not to bug out and run once my shields go down.

I only bug out because it becomes too expensive to take damage :p

The mirrored armor actually does work against kinetic weapons, but not as well as reactive armor. There was a load of testing done with graphs and cool stuff, I can't find it anymore.

Well it's still worth getting, it's only maybe 4 off your top speed, it's just added protection and when you have unlimited funds, yeah in pvp people will target your subsystems, doesn't mean they will hit them.

Do the different types of armour protect your ship components (specifically the powerplant)?

If not, what is the point of using it?
