Galnet E3 announcement by president Hudson?

"Our youth has become flabby. Lying inanimate, plugged in to their sims hour after hour, day after day, living in dream worlds that never have existed and never will exist. They need to take part in the real world, and so we will be creating programs to allow them to do just that. Programmes that will excite them, engage them, train them. We will fund these programmes in full, the first of which will be announced to Congress on Tuesday 16th.”

Did Hudson just announce the announcement of the pvp arena?!

That would be quite a big deal if it realy is the Arena PVP mode...
yeah, some will say that its the worst thing ever...but i would like it.
Im not a PVP guy at all, i dont want to loose my ship just because someone sniped my PP...but as an arena where i cant loose them, where i use a simulated ship...that might be fun

It certainly seems to point towards PVP arenas. What a load of ... i really would like to fill this page with expletives. If this is PVP arena then I will repeatedly smash my face off the keyboard. An obvious attempt to lure a different demographic to the game. Wasn't the reason behind the kickstarter so that we would avoid like this? Frontier are about to mess this up real good.

What a dull way to go about PVP.

They have 400 billion stars, a procedural galaxy, 10 powers, 3 "empires", thousands upon thousands of small factions, trade routes, mining sites, supercruise, nav becons, outposts, pirate bases along with the ability to have all of these interact with each other in meaningful ways. I would like to think Frontier have more imagination than to make a PvP Arena when they have a galaxy of such magnitude and potential right at hand.

May be, if it implemented correctly it could be pretty fun. Imagine Powers deciding to settle who wins a system by having to randomly select to 4 pilots of all varying skills to fight in a arena. Or imagine a minor system wants to encourage a trade so they build themselves a arena via community goal and then invite pilots from across the galaxy to fight in it. You could even link the success of the community goals to the size of the prize fund, how many pilots can take part and so forth.

Yeah, but so what? More customers -> more money -> more resources to improve on the game.

Wasn't the reason behind the kickstarter so that we would avoid like this?

Avoid what? Customers?

I think an arena mode for instant dogfights could be a fun and useful addition to the game. I could improve on my fighting skills and experiment a little, without having to risk everything. The existence of such a simulator makes also a lot of sense in terms of realism. I would never set a foot in a real spaceship without proper trainining.

If I had been a kickstarter I would be raving if this is indeed true.
As is it is I am only Premium Beta (heard about it too late) but this even with me leaves a sour taste.
This is not what was desribed back then, we have not gotten what what was described and envisioned and now possibly this... this is a travesty.
There are so many things ingame not living up , to the lowest expectations yet, and they embark on something new.
If true this is beyond all reasonable understanding.

What Smagallo means is this; David Braben said numerous times that Frontier were crowd funding the game so that they could make the game they are interested in. If they went to a publisher, the publisher would force Frontier to target multiple demographs in order to maximize profit at the expense of degrading the focused niche aim of the game. Braben said he was very pleased he wouldn't have to take this approach.

Well... welcome to the real world. Besides: It isn't like the community hasn't asked for an arena mode.

Yes. The world where companies promise an apple and then give you an orange! :D :p

The world where companies need money, so that their employees can feed their families. I also can't remember that FD have promised to exclude a dogfighting simulator. Why would they? Even WC1 and X-Wing had one.

Thanks for clarifying my own post :) I'm not very good at explaining myself, this is exactly 100% what I meant.

Elite: Dangerous is no longer the game pitched at the kickstarter and rightfully a lot of people are annoyed by this as some pledged thousands. I'm glad I didn't though I have gave them about 200 quid. I've put hours into the game and I'm burnt out and more than a little jaded. Frontier have continually disappointed and will continue to do so. I dread to think about planetary landings and how they're going to implement it. Zero confidence at the moment.

Profit can be used to justify anything Beetlebum. :) It's a tired argument and one that is completely pointless to engage in, because it goes in circles and is self-fullfilling. The end result argument is always the same "Profit". Yes that is the way the world works. But that doesn't make it "good" or "right", and it certainly doesn't mean customers are going to be happy about it.

Regarding a potential Deathmatch module, I tend to feel this:

They have 400 billion stars, a procedural galaxy, 10 powers, 3 "empires", thousands upon thousands of small factions, trade routes, mining sites, supercruise, nav becons, outposts, pirate bases along with the ability to have all of these interact with each other in meaningful ways. Frontier also didn't explicitly state that we wouldn't have superheros, space whales or death stars.

Well, some kind of "simulator"-mode would be a nice addition in my opinion. Old "Jumpgate" did have it back in the days. For me it just would make ED a richer world. And to be honest I really would expect that pilots living in the future would have access to such "simulations". Either for real training or for entertainment.
Especially for those CMDRs not having much time at hand but loving to fight or try out some ideas this would be great. I do not understand, except for Frontier's previous statements on this Topic, why so many People think so negatively about it.

It is in Terms of a parallel world not much different from the solo mode, which in my opinion is worse than the possibility to have mutual agreed on quick PVP fun.
