Rep Decay with Minor Factions, not just Major!

I just jumped into the founders world after being away since the start of 1.3. I am presented with a red down arrow on the pilots federation for negative reputation and am now apparently only friendly with them.

Devs have confirmed there should be no rep loss with minor factions, only major ones.

I sold 250 million worth of exploration data to Jameson Memorial. Lets repeat that 250 million, and after that I am now only friendly! This is Frontier plain and simple.

Decay on achievements will kill this game.

Wait, since your reputation for the major faction is a SUM of your reputation across the minor factions how does that work???
I think the developers said that Ranks do not decay such as Lord/midshipman/postcommander etc., rep deffo should amongst minor factions to 0.

Could you quote/link the dev comment?

Sorry, I don't have time to find the quote. They basically said that they were going to make minor and major faction negative rep decay to unfriendly but that minor faction positive rep would never decay. That is not the case.

Pilots Federation is a completely separate independent minor faction from any of the major factions. Not affected by Alliance, Federation of Empire reputation or ranks.

It's the other way too: Once allied with the major faction, you're also allied with all minors, even those you never saw. That those decay along with the major is only logical. Also the rep decay opens up re-allying, to get naval missions again, once they are fixed at least.

The pilots federation is not aligned with any major faction. Decay from Allied to Friendly in the space of 2 weeks after selling 250 million of exploration data makes sense to you?

Yeah, I agree with you Numa. The point I was trying to make is if the major faction decayed but minor didn't you'd never be able to keep allied rating since there'd be no minor factions left to befriend.

Doesn't really matter, its a minor faction same as Empire pact therefore the decay applies even if it isn't aligned to the major factions (whether this is right or wrong I think 1.3 will have block applied it to all factions including pirates etc).
Yeah, it does seem strange that 250mil of explo data sold doesn't keep them allied at least a month but maybe they tweaked the rates. A lot of people were/are doing the permit missions solely through exploration hand-ins so they may have nerfed the reputation bonus for them. It's already been proven that missions help rep significantly more than anything else.

Hi
Here is the quote from the Lead Designer you are looking for.

And yes, this was already an issue during the beta and is currently in the live Build.

Thanks, that's exactly the one I was thinking of. Not only is reputation decaying, it's decaying more than they stated it would. I don't agree with decay on reputation at all. A massive de-motivator to bother playing the game. However, added on top of that it just sickens me that in the space of two weeks someone who has sold 250 million of exploration data can go from Allied to Friendly.

It only decays when we're offline though, like a punishment for not playing. Shall we see other achievements taken away as well. You haven't played the game for 2 weeks so we have taken 250,000 cr fee for your absence, maybe you lose your ship after a month of inactivity...

I have a brand new perspective on reputation decay for major factions. It's probably similar to my past stance, but here's how I feel about it now.

Right now, I've worked around the various parts of the Empire to become Allied with some notable minor factions. Thanks to bug sorting from the Devs, I became a Knight, having been a Squire through performing missions and not getting promotions since then. However, a side effect of this is that through doing lots of small missions and becoming Allied with scattered assorted minor factions, I am now formally Allied with the whole Empire.

And it doesn't feel right. Being universally Allied, that is, not being a Knight. Being a Knight is cool. Very cool. :D

For one thing, now I do not know my precise reputation stance with every Empire-aligned minor faction in the game: with them, right now I am just "Allied." There will be only two situations when I will know for sure what my exact position on the rep spectrum is for a given Empire-affiliated minor faction: when I complete a mission involving that faction and see the reputation change breakdown; and oncemajor faction rep decay kicks in (which it probably will do once I get back to doing Federal military missions or going on another grand exploration journey). At those points, only then I will know which minor factions remain Allied and which ones are merely Friendly or just Neutral at the end of the day, without the blanket whitewashing of the global status. However, they take some time to do, and some effort. I don't want to wait.

In that respect, I have a suggestion.

Allow major reputation to decay as per the current plan, but make clear the distinction between being genuinely Allied to a minor faction, and being allied as per global, major faction stance towards you. Perhaps it would be better if the global rep standings be relabelled to Trusted instead of Allied, and Recognised instead of Friendly, and perhaps Indifferent instead of Neutral. Being Allied to a minor faction overrides all global labels, being Friendly to a minor faction overrides the global Recognised and Indifferent labels only (but Trusted overrides this if one is globally Trusted), and so on. Similar for the negative rep labels, which can be Untrusted instead of Unfriendly, and Enemy instead of Hostile.

This way, there is emphasis of the permanence of minor faction reputation over time, while still acknowledging the global effects of major faction reputation and recognising that this can change according to one's recent activity with that major faction.

That's exactly the way I will go as well if the idea of an update is to take things away from players rather than give something new.

Hmm, the more of the details I actually learn about powerplay the less I like it. Any offline decay sucks major, I mean im in hospital for 2 weeks and come back to a neutral stance with everyone, way to get people back into the game...

If you are in hospital for two weeks, you've got more serious things to worry about that some "rep-decay" in an on-line game. :)

Fair point :D I was making a hypothetically valid reason to be offline for an extended period and it was the first thing that came to mind. Considering the effort finding minor factions and doing many many missions to ally with a faction (at least from my memories of 1.2) it would put me off returning somewhat.

What Zion Ravescene said.

Also, in the system faction view on the right-hand side of the cockpit, we should be able to view our influence with the faction, as per the meter which goes up/down when we turn in completed missions, to better gauge where we're at concerning relations to the faction as opposed to being a blanket-ally because of relations with the other factions.

Neutral? I think you mean Friendly since reputation decay won't take you lower than that.

Just inside the friendly boundary so I read that as a single down arrow puts you into neutral.
If you view each of the categories as 100% then 50% of neutral would be the 0 point, 100% of Allied would be the max achievable. Being at 1% of friendly is as good as neutral really. Although I get your point it wouldn't actually tic over. Maybe I should wake up properly before I start posting...
