I thought updates were supposed to make things better.

Or is that just me being silly.
Since the latest update things have gotten decidedly worse - and no I am not talking about PP. Getting involved in a 'Space Opera' is something that I am just not interested and never will be. As Bones might say - it's Elite Jim but not as we know it (or particularly want it). However, each to his own as they say, and if that's what others want to do that's fine with me. After all, nobody is forcing us to become involved (thank God!).
No, I am talking about the overall playability with relation to the graphics.
The game - which used to run so smoothly on my PC - now stutters, freezes and jumps to an alarming degree.
Combat is now a nightmare - it being almost impossible to lock on to and follow a target.
For me the game is fast approaching becoming unplayable.

That is strange to hear. My graphics improved with the most recent changes. I am using an NVidia card. What are you using?

My graphics and frame rate improved as well. So did the sound.

Sorry to hear you are having problems, I have not had any issues, my pc is AMD, card is Radeon R9 270 2GB, hope someone can advise something that might help.

You could take a look in the bugs forum if you have not already, also if you post your full specs one of the many knowledgeable IT people here may be able to help.

Best of luck

Not to be rude, but that card is 9 years old, it has half a gig of video RAM, which is what the shaders are loaded into.

What graphics settings are you running it with?
Admitted the card is an old one. However, it was handling everything perfectly until the latest update. If you remember we were promised that performance would improve with each update - not decline.
I know I am not alone in suffering this problem, and - as one of the other posters has put forward - I believe it may be server related rather than anything to do with my PC.

So, it's fair to say that the cards may not be the trouble. IT will be hard to sort out because of the uncertain reactions. I would be sure my video drivers are up to date, and I would re-set my graphics settings to what the game suggests and start from there.

Your issue here is that Frontier only have to work to their minimum specs (which is a 1GB ATI 4870HD). Shaders are now preloaded into video ram as opposed to on demand (ie when you fly up to a planet). Whilst I don't have any detail on just how much that takes up, if it worked previously then that may just have been as a result of the loading what it needed on demand. Whilst it's fair to say that you're having issues with performance, there are also a lot of posts about peoples surprise about how much better it is for them, and also bear in mind that people don't tend to post when stuff is working well... You still haven't let us know what graphics settings you're running though, thus short of know the card spec, we (the community that is...) know very little else to be able to assist you further.

Really would like to be able to assist you further if we can, let us know thanks!

Yeah cassog; your going to have to explain yourself better....I'm assuming 'Space Opera' means Power-play.

Playability relative to the graphics is a mystery to me; are you equating the stuttering and freezing with the graphics? If so, I'm not having this problem.

Since I so seldom combat, I can't respond further.

Graphics settings - I have always let the game choose what it determines as the optimum for my system. Haven't altered them at all. Have just finished a session of play and noticed that the problem wasn't as bad this time - which again leads me to believe that this is a server issue.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT

I would think it's time for an upgrade! I wouldn't be surprised if many of the optimisations won't propagate down to those cards as they are deemed legacy / obsolete by ATI so no driver updates and very little incentive for developers to tailor tweaks for them.

For just over £100, the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti is a very capable card, quiet and only draws 60W so you won't need to upgrade any other components in your machine and will be a significant upgrade.

Yes, I realised quite some time ago that I could do with a graphic card update. It's not that simple though - when I looked into it I discovered I had been sold a PC that could not be upgraded in this way - thank you Dell.
So if I do want to step it up a bit it would have to be a new PC - which at the moment would have to be fairly low down on my list of financial priorities.

Can you elaborate? What specifically prevents you?

Can't remember the exact specifics now - it was a while ago - but I think it has something to do with the motherboard.
It is a Dell Inspiron 530.
I just remember looking into it and being told that the card couldn't be upgraded. I'll see if I can dig out the original query and replies.

Oh dear DELL use their own propietry motherboards which can be an absolute pain if you want to do any upgrading as getting any information is a right pain in the back side.

Also Dell use bottom of the range cheap PSU's which have a nasty habit of not lasting very well. My brother works in a place where they use Dell's and he is forever moaning about how often the things blow and take a PC with them.

If you have the cash perhaps a complete rebuild might be in order as you can get something very nice for something in the 500-750 range for self build. If you are not confident a local independant PC shop may be able to help you out. Our local one will put together a PC for £50 if you supply the parts.

2 years ago I made a self built console PC/HTPC with i5 etc which runs elite and all the new games on my TV when I am alone in the house for £500 including case.

But there are some grapgical issues as my i7 quad core with EVGA GTX 970, 16 Gig memory and SSD drive are having graphical issues when doing a moderate amount of combat either interdictions and USS, when I go back to a station the whole game locks up for 1-5 mins then stutters until I log out and back in, so there are still issues which are most likely game rather than user related.

I haven't bought a pre-owned PC for a long time but in reading about the Inspiron 530 there's conflicting information about whether it can be upgraded or not. Trustedreviews.com says "Elsewhere the insides conform to a very typical layout and if you do fancy upgrading (outside the warranty of course) you shouldn't have any problems. However you won't find any quick release mechanisms, hinged drive bays, or any other labour saving devices to aid you."

If you are confident enough to do so it might be worth opening up the case yourself just to be absolutely sure whether you have any options open to you.
