ED Blue Peter Head Tracker

I have a feeling that facetracknoir + decent camera + delanclip will give TrackIR a run for its money -- delanclip in particular (being machined from a piece of aluminium) looks much better to me than the plastic TrackIR product, which is quite flimsy according to reviews I've seen.

I believe you can use delanclip with TrackIR gear, though. Can't get waited to start playing with this stuff for real, in-game.

The Track IR itself just sits on your screen, so it should be fine but the clip you add to your hat is a bit flimsy I'd say.

So I think they are different products.

What does moribund mean? I'm not very bright and too lazy to look....

The question I was responding to concerned the choice of facetracknoir vs freetrack; facetracknoir is still being developed while freetrack does not appear to be, going by their website. So it might well be a waste of time to get freetrack working, since it might well not have much of a future and given that there's a working alternative.

Moribund
1. near death
2. stagnant; without force or vitality

:)

Hi Guys,

Sorry was out with it being crimble/new year. In the FaceTrackNoIR (1.7) application window you will see a drop-down box with Game protocol above it. That should set to Freetrack v2.0

Also have a look at this: -

http://naturalpointofview.blogspot.co.uk/p/trackirfixer.html

You may need to run that. I don't have ED alpha or beta to try it. I'm currently playing around with GlovePIE which use the mics in the PS Eye Camera for voice recognition. I setting it up in Supreme Commander but I hope to use it also in ED with the head-tracking.

Happy New Year

Hi,

I've added the following comment to the thread http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=238678#post238678 : -

Basically the virtual joystick FaceTrackNoIR creates which I can then bind to the head look controls is also reporting something else that the game thinks is pressing up on any menus.

The only way to fix it is to unbind that control but then that means you have an input you can never use for anything as it won't rebind. This probably has something to do with the fact the game doesn't distinguish between multiple joysticks present at the same time where as it can distinguish between an xbox 360 pad and joystick.

Hi Mike,

FaceTrackNoIR supports a couple of game protocols VJOY being one of them. FreeTrack is the 'default' game protocol for FaceTrackNoIR. FreeTrack is used by a number of games to allow FaceTrackNoIR to use work with it. FreeTrack can also work with TrackIR games that use non-encrypted version of the TrackIR head tracking interface. The encrypted version was added later to stop this situation by NaturalPoint (TrackIR manufacturer). Could you please let us know if you plan on supporting the FreeTrack protocol for head tracking.

Happy New Year

So let's see what Mike (Evans) comes back with.

Thanks
Haider

Cool.
Seems like we might be making progress.
I hope the encrypted TrackIR thing does not ****** us up....

Having said that there is always a way around.....

While Track IR is more expensive, it has the advantage of not being a webcam. Here's a post I made in the Track IR thread:
My only concerns would be how well the webcam based versions would work?

Actually, there's one other concern I just remembered: the webcam based version requires you to have a webcam. I don't want a webcam. Why? Well, google 'viruses take over webcam' - that's why. I have no wish to be spied upon by some stranger...

Track IR might have a camera in it, but it can't be used as a webcam:

It would seem that the TrackIR cannot be used as a webcam merely because it has an infrared-pass filter over the sensor. The hardware built in strips excess data from the video stream. (Important only with earlier low powered single core PCs).

Or at least it used to in earlier versions - the newer versions apparently leave a lot more "greyscale" image info in the stream for additional positional processing on board the host PC.

But it is still essentially a webcam.

A standard webcam with suitable IR filtering won't be any more useful to a hacker, and it won't overheat, or be rendered obsolete by a TrackIR software update (like earlier TrackIR cams).

Can't see why ED can't support the encrypted, proprietary TrackIR protocol (FD have to purchase the SDK for it) AND the completely open Freetrack protocol equally.

Because apparently the TrackIR NDA prevents it!

We should push them to support an 'open' standard.

Edit
Anyone with sufficient access to ask if FD will support the Freetrack protocol for head tracking? I don't have alpha or beta.

Agreed, and this is in fact why I posted the link to the naturalpointofview blog both here (in the Alpha forum) and on the SC forum which has brought it to everyone's attention ;-)

Worrying tbh.....

NDA's that carry anti-competitive exclusions shouldn't be agreed to... it just shows the kind of company they are.

I can't get to the URL.

I think they are usually via 3rd party mods or via plugin extensions so the alternative tracker support is not built in. Some devs have fought against the NDA (read threatened to remove TrackIR support) and been given a special less restrictive NDA and therefore allowed to implement alternative trackers.

May be Bohemia the Arma developes have the less restrictive NDA as they support FreeTrack protocol natively since Arma 2.

Hey Stoo and Huwthomas,
did either of you get your camera and clip yet?
Still waiting on mine to arrive.

I want to try it at low res and 125 fps because I think just for looking around
speed is more desirable than accuracy.
Anyone else had any joy yet?

It works with war thunder but for some reason I need to download six gigs again, sigh!

Not yet ... mine will be more for tinkering (for the time being) since I don't have alpha access.
