Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Some fine examples there of how to do it well. And now for a few examples of how not to apply thermal paste:

It is going to die of warmth, like that

  • Put dividers between the case and the motherboard. These screw into the holes in the case and you line up the motherboard with the screw holes in the dividers.
You mean standoffs, right? The brass hexagons that support the mobo on case screw holes.

Add: DO NOT put any non-conductive / insulating washers (ground plates) between mobo & case, the contact dividers/standoffs provide are needed for mobo grounding.

Yup, that's what I meant, forgot what they were called. Have seen forum posts where people have screwed the mobo directly to the case without the standoffs. I guess it's a easy mistake to make if you don't know what you're doing.

That is quite funny, as it does not matter to much. The washers are not really needed, and if you do put them in, it will not effect the running... However new mainboards dont come with them anymore, so any noob will not make the mistake.
Ah, ok. IIRC that was important, but maybe not so.
If you put the paper washers between standoff & mobo, it shouldn't disrupt grounding, screw top is in contact with metal around screw hole in mobo, the screw of course inside standoff and standoff on case. So yeah, that "DO NOT..." part may be a bit redundant. :)

Improtant thing with standoffs: make sure that all are of same height, to prevent any tension in / breaking the mobo.

The other important thing is to only put the standoffs where they're needed.

Cases often have several mounting options for different sized boards, so make sure there isn't going to be a standoff in the wrong place for the motherboard being installed.

Those washers shouldn't be needed because, if you look at the mounting holes, it will have a largeish ring of metal on the PCB that is more than enough space to stop any damage by the screwhead and give you a decent electrical connection as well.

What hardware to buy?

I am (until E-D will be released) only a casual gamer, so I do not have any gaming stuff in my PC. (my original Arcade Joystick with which I played the original Elite can't be plugged in :) )

I have a Core i7 2600 CPU and 8GB memory. System is on a SSD drive, data on Raid1 HDD's. Screens are a 19" 1280x1024 in portrait mode and a 23" 1920x1080 in landscape. Currently on mainboard-graphics (Intel 3000?).

So I would need a graphic card and a joystick/game-input.

Since my wife is working from home on this PC, the graphic card should be (near to) silent. I found this card: http://www.powercolor.com/de/products_features.asp?id=473 A Radeon HD7850 with passive cooling. Will this be enough to play on max details? As an alternative, this card should be rather silent in office mode: http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-775.shtml

But I am totally at a loss for an input device and I don't want to spend a lot here... It seems we can steer the rolling and pitching, look around in the cockpit, do lateral movement, and fire at least two different cannons. This Looks like a job for an XBOX360 controller. Or should I look for something with more controls?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Definitely a graphics card.

The silence thing is a bit of an issue though: not sure if some of the beefier ones spin their fans down if not being stressed too much.

Btw, is Cmdr Skywalker your accepted commander name in the game? I thought that such things were forbidden by the devs.

It should be (almost) unnoticable when using the PC in office mode, that's the whole point for me. So it should be a good compromise between noise and graphic power...

I'm not sure yet on which side of the Force I will play...

I wouldn't go with a passively cooled card because it would need good airflow around it, which means case fans which in turn would defeat the object.
Get a decent gaming card & noise won't be an issue while your wife is using the machine because the fans only spin up to audible levels when the card is working hard.

Faerie speaketh the truth. I have a GTX780 and I've not yet heard it, even in Far Cry 3 or Tomb Raider 3D it has been very quiet. When not using 3D GFX, nothing at all.
