Should I upgrade to Type 9

I'm currently flying a python for trading and using a vulture for combat.

I'm sitting at around 99 million.

Currently I have outfitted my python for pure trading, with no shields or weapons...all out cargo - 292

It's making me a good bit of cash, but I'm wondering should I upgrade to a type 9 as my main trading ship or stick it out with the python for trading.

In 1.2 this was the tried and tested double your money stage. In 1.3 I'm not sure - that's probably the question you should be asking: does it still work?

I did do this exact change from a Python to a Type 9 and the 500 cargo is excellent but the ship is SO slow and the jump range was poor, in the end I don't think I was earning that much more per trip because to make the best money I was having to make 3 or 4 jumps to 1 or 2 with the Python. In the end I swapped back!

I remember buying my Type 9 to fit a trade route, with 2 jumps. You are right, sometimes it doesn't feel like it's more, and it would worry me not that they have nerfed 'upward thrust and FA off' - this was the foolproof way to escape npc pirates and get out of masslock of the space station, or get to the front of the space station without taking all day.
Realistically I averaged 2 million per hour in python, 4 million in T9...best 6 million

A T9 is good for 2 things.
1: Grinding your way to an Anaconda.
2: Selling it after that.

Its slow, doesn't jump, its slow, only flies in straight lines and it is slow.

I am in the same situation like the OP (with bit more cr.). What I read in several forums is that it seems to be better to skip T9 for trading Conda. Thats at least what I will do.

It seems to be pretty hard to find more than 1.5k/t earnings and without that (or long way to get) the T9 doesnt make sense since you can make 3-4m/hr with a simple Asp and 50t space. And selling ships is now 10% loss, if I got 1.3 update correct.

PS: Conda cost just 125m at Diaguandri

I traded my Python for a T9 yesterday. I got it on discount so I figured I'd give it a go. B rated FSD and all D everything else,
Class ?5? D shield generator and a docking computer with 496t cargo. My house get chaotic with kids and dogs and find my self distracted from time to time and that docking computer is a life saver sometimes. Im making a solid 1.2-1.5mil 2 jump curcuit right now. I have a central system I operate from that has 2 systems that I can do 3 different routes. Not as much per ton profit I was making in imperial space with slaves but this market is MUCH more stable in supply, demand, and price. Less time sourcing trades after one dries out, and higher profits at the end of the day.

I went like this, Python - Type 9 - Conda - Python.

I felt the loss of platform stations was too much and jump range for T9 was really bad.

Its love or hate. I love that slow of a ship so I would say yes do it. But of course, theres a good chance you are not like me ^^

But then again, while I bought a T9 and love it I never sold my Python for it. I'm not in a hurry when it comes to making money and getting new Ships. Certianly would miss my Python, its too a very lovely ship.

Hmm. I had the same dilemma as you. In the end I did chop the Python in for a type 9 and it did make me a lot more cash.
If you've got a 1 to 2 jump nice trade run then it should make a lot more cash. The 40% extra cargo should mitigate the slower ship. Fit a smaller fuel tank to up the jump range, I would suggest of your trade run needs more than half a tank you're spending too long travelling anyway (IMO).

I traded the T9 for a trading spec Anaconda as soon as I could and the T9 made this happen much quicker than the Python could. The cargo drop on the 'conda is not much and the speed/ jump range made it more profitable.

The only warning/ worry I would have is I ran the T9 before 1.3. It feels now like I get interdicted a lot more and the AI is more competent. Even in trade spec my Anaconda lays waste to them but T9 (without weapons!) obviously wouldn't have. My worry now would be some of the AI might be too much for the T9 to escape from.
In that scenario the loss of 500t cargo plus ship rebuy might make the Python ultimately more cost effective.

How much money should I make sure I have before taking the plunge to an Anaconda? I am almost at the 125m discounted price now if I sell my other two ships but I don't want to buy one and end up hamstrung. If I buy one I want to make sure I can afford the insurance and afford to upgrade it to a decent jump size and use it for trading and exploring to start with. Nothing exceptional but just good enough to do those two things before I equip it for combat

Have a play with ED shipyard and find a fit that you like and can afford. The Anaconda I started trading in was about Cr160M, now its over 200. It's still much more trader than combat (4A shield) but it's still pretty tasty in a fight.

The obvious is always don't lose sight of the re-buy! The hard rule should be re-buy plus full cargo x 2. Cr11M focuses the mind...

I was looking to eventually go for this type of spec'd anaconda for trading.

will be a while grinding for it yet

I could trade in my python and go for something like this in a type 9

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70Y,5Rs5Rs5Rs5QS5QS,2-8SBa9Y8SA06u9s,0DI0Bk0AA7TC07207205U05U0nE

I do like how quick it is to dock the python though at medium stations.

You could get away with a much cheaper class powerplant with that spec on the annie.

I use a 4A shield, lighter, frees up more cargo and is robust enough for trading.

Weapons I use gb no turrets, with decent thrusters its mobility is good enough with four pips to engines. Again it's primarily trading to combat is not heavy enough or prolonged enough for shields to be an issue.
The NPC muppet that pulls you out of SC will have his shields down so won't last beyond one fill of the weapons power. Weapons: gb beams on the small/ medium points, gb cannons on the larger points.

I just put it this way;

If you want the best ship in your price range and still have good defense, python.
Raw bulk cash, T9.
Then, once you can, get an Anaconda and gear that thing well. A 440 T max hold make it worth it, and it can sure as hell defend itself.

If I were you, I would attempt to look for a good short jump route with a good payout. There are a few websites that can give you plenty of short, well paying jump routes with the stations less than 100ls from the arrival point.
