News David Braben Guest Blog - on Xbox One and CQC

Absolutely not. Please read the blog again if you're unsure, and try to be reasonable. I know this is great for Elite: Dangerous and the team who have worked so hard on making the game an amazing experience. It will only improve the support we can offer to our existing playerbase.

I know what I said was hyperbole, but you should probably get out ahead of this. You need to re-affirm your support for the PC player-base by announcing some content / development plans that are relevant to PC players. I know as a company you are excited to expand the Elite community to XBOX, and that's great. I am happy for you guys. But it doesn't look good for PC players, no matter how much you assure people it's all coming to PC too. It still feels like PC development and the core features we're still waiting for are getting back-burnered for purely business reasons.

The core Elite experience still needs a lot of development (where is the kind of experience shown in the "Distress call" Youtube trailer?). Much of the game still feels like place-holder content (missions and USS are super repetitive and predictable, exploration has virtually no gameplay or adventure). This is why people aren't happy to hear the PC updates are getting lower priority than XBOX stuff.

Come on. You guys really expect your Alpha, PB and B backers, not to mention current players, all PC GAMERS, to be happy about this can you?

As soon as Frontier announced the timed exclusive for xbox we knew what was coming. Now that it is here I am indifferent. They promised not to turn Elite into an arcade style console game, but that it precisely what this is. I get it is about the money and provided I can still play the game I know and love the way I want to play it... Without this arcade nonsense and board game tripe then I am happy. Each to their own, but let's not kid ourselves that this is the game we backed at KickStarter.

I just hope there really is something for everybody, because console gamers generally have a short attention span and to cater for them and those looking for a more long term sandbox will not be an easy task.

Hmmm

I'm really happy about this - the pvp-ers get their fix & fd get the x-boxerists cash that they can hopefully invest in making a deeper experience for the rest of us.
As a beta backer I'm not interested in the CQC mode in the slightest so not keen to beta test it - let some new x-boxers enjoy the spinning-sidewinder-beta-fun, they'll loved it ;)

I usually don't disagree with you Slack but, this is not the game we all backed. Not even close.

Calm down folks. Let the console users have this one, it sounds a perfect fit for the platform. CQC reads as a dumbed down arena-type mode for typical console users. It sounds like it basically cuts out the ED universe and simply allows ships to challenge and shoot at each other. More funds into FDEV coffers = better game updates for those that will continue to play ED normally. :D We'll see...

I fully agree with you. I doubt the typical console user is the one we want in the standard game. Imagine how many "for teh lolz"-killings we'd see then... So let them have their lolz in the arena...

Why would we buy ED for XBOX (which is so inferior to PS4 in all designs and cost) if we own it on PC already? Only to get a £5 coupon in store? When we as pre-order customers, Alpha/Beta backers do not get a voucher at all!
CQC will not have to grind credits? Is it just a demo mode combat or what exactly?

Personally, I think the game should be accessible to all. Like many here, I fell in love with it when I was a kid (12 year-old)! It shouldn't be something impenetrable for 40-something sim-heads. I think it's at its best when it's a Han Solo simulator.

But... I think Frontier are going to further alienate their backers all the same.

Deary me, people paid upwards of £200 for Alpha access, some people paid £5000 and had multiple accounts during the Kickstarter and you give access to Xbox users ahead of them. If you don't see an issue with that then I give up.

The kickstarter gave FD 1.5 million pounds. The game cost "significantly more than" 8 million. I paid pledged a huge amount, but I bet Microsoft pledged a hell of a lot more! I like the current ED a lot, and it would not have been possible without considerable funding other than from kickstarter. People were similarly resentful of console versions of the witcher 3, but again they were necessary to make the game as it is in the first place.

We knew when Xbone ED was announced that something was going to xbox first... CQC looks pretty cool, and I look forward to the PC/Mac version. I would be upset if they had first access to planetary landings or walking round the ships, but instead they have first access to a mode that was previously unannounced, and not part of the design discussions with DDF. I'm pretty ok with that :)

Nope. You are right. It is EXTRA to the game we all backed :)
Cool right ?

Sorry Ian, not cool. The PC version is bug ridden and needs a pile of content added but Frontier are charging ahead with another new feature. Why can't they make the PC version work properly before charging off onto something new. Basically it looks like a real kick in the teeth for the people who funded the kickstarter. The PC is now playing second fiddle to the consoles.

Yet another fantastic FD marketing and comms success!!! They just keep coming these communications and ideas with much success attached to them :/

Jeezus what's the matter with you lot at FD towers? Alpha player 300 quid paid into development here...put yourselves in our shoes maybe? You know the shoes that followed you and paid money to you to all that time ago when the nasty publishers might have told you what to do with your game? Beginning to think the nasty publisher man is getting things right over you lot especially in marketing and comms.

Sad.

With everything that has transpired there's not many teeth left.

I don't care about PvP, so CQB leaves me calm. I just hoped that FPS and/or planetary landing will be announced and showed at E3. It seems, unfortunately, it doesn't happen. In any case, good luck with XOne beta, guys!
