"Close Quarter Combat" - definitely not the direction I hoped ED would take from now...

It also provides a way for people to hone their skills. Right now many people find PvP intimidating as its hard to start without incurring massive costs. This will allow anyone who is interested in become a really great pilot to do so in a much more friendly manner. Most hardcore flight-sims I've played had this feature from the go as it just is the smartest way to allow people to practice this part of combat. Making it close-quarter is a brilliant move and will really force you to use all thrusters.

This was practically guaranteed the day they announced it was going onto consoles. Watch for threads mysteriously being deleted again as FD goes into damage control overdrive at the anger from this.

I hope they keep all reactions. You guys are almost as entertaining as the new features we're being given. Please tell us more about how the world is ending and ED will never reach its true potential because David ignored you. :)

The problem isn't that a combat arena will exist. The problem people seem to have is that FDevs focus purely on catering towards the multi-player crowd, while a lot of people play Solo. That group gets absolutely nothing from such updates.

I'd go a step further-
A lot of people complain because basic features they would love to see working, such as background simulator, real dynamic trading, proper dynamic missions, all professions being equal are still lacking, six month after release. Instead, FD puts energy into a marketing stunt for console sales. And let's be honest, that's what it is. Nothing more, but also nothing less.
This affects everyone, solo open or Moebius alike.

It just goes to show how pathetic some people are.

We all knew it was coming to console, we all know they have an attention span of a fart in a bubble bath.

FD need money to pay there staff and develop the game, for the rest us.

Doubt it, otherwise nobody would play it.
Yep, another game where open world pee v pee didn't play out well that is started hacking in arenas to keep the PvP people pleased. PvP rule #1 - good luck finding players if there is any loss associated with it. It happened so many time in the recent history so that you would be surprised FDev is not interested in learning from the experiences of others :) Any bets we will get PvP-only lasers by the year end that are obtainable only after playing 1000 matches? Well, may be next year end :)

Allow me to put some spin on your anger.

As part of the fleshing out of the ED universe would it not be reasonable to assume that like on Earth with the Olympic / World games that the Major Factions would also hold tournaments of equal grandeur and magnitude ? (Something I suggested in the DDF a very long time - monthly / annual games and tournaments) Wouldn't you expect at some point for major rivals from across the clans to come face to face in battles to the "virtual" death in recognition of galactic glory ?

If FD can get this right for the PC/MAC users as something else you can do (optional) I welcome it into ED.

I am with the OP on this. I suspect CQC is the "big E3 announcement" when I was hoping anything remotely resembling the expansions listed during the Kickstarter would be announced. Watching the trailer, I was quite disappointed to see the "collectables" that you have to fly through to pick things up - I am sure there will also be capture the drone mode as well...

C'mon guys, what did you expect, that they'd try and draw in console players with Powerplay, trading and flipping systems 0.1% at a time ?

I think they're doing the right thing here, i also think we all might benefit in the long run.

One of the increasingly Multi-player/competitive/achievement centric things that have been added to do in it. And now it's full on PvP. I smell the coffee. I don't drink coffee.

Ah, yes... Then I can see why this wouldn't appeal.
It's said we're to get this later in the year, I think it likely we'll get more content by that time, hopefully some that also pleases those that wish to play solo as well is the open crowd.
/rare case of optimism

If you look at other games, part of their popularity is due to the variety of things to do, from fishing to arena based PVP. More variety has to be better - PVP arena should need less development than open world - they already have the weapons and ships in place.

Yeah, this was to be expected when they announced it for the consoles.

Even though I have no real interest in CQC it's obvious now that us old 84's are really not wanted anymore, we did our job, we kickstarted the game for them, now we are not the target audience and the game is heading quite in the opposite direction I ever thought Elite would.

..how long I can stay for the ride is unknown..

I was always pretty excited with the new free updates FD announced for ED, even though neither "Community Goals" nor "Wings" nor "Powerplay" introduced the features from the DDA that I waited for - mostly a richer environment, more fleshed-out NPCs and NPC interaction, more varied missions including passenger game play etc.
The updates essentially only catered to the multi player crowd, IMHO.

But the following announcement of "Close Quarter Combat" finally managed to quench my enthusiasm for the future of ED completely:

So, a dog fighting PVP arena mode to satisfy CoD and BF players will be what FD puts it's focus on in the future. Can't say that I am thrilled. :(

Edit: link to announcement: https://community.elitedangerous.com/node/202

Theres no harm done here as this wont affect the rest of the game in any way, everyone can keep on going as they do now, OR they can check out this content too.

But I agree with you that there are alot of things that should be prioritized above a PvP module, but I guess this is done for the console market where its likely the attention span is far less then among this community. (Not insulting or targeting anyone now, just pointing out the way the market looks today)

If nothing else, the addition of a PVP crowd should make sure that weapons and combat stays balanced which is a good thing for all of us.

I'm frankly amazed at this rabid, foaming at the mouth thats going on.

Am I some sort of deluded PC gamer in thinking this might be....like, fun to do?

I don't get how this is a problem, is it a bad thing that other people get content of their own? Anyone could see that ed would at least get some form of pvp content.

I said ages ago that I thought it would be cool if they added an arena mode. Combat is so good and nuanced, that I felt like they needed a mode to show case how great it is.

I guess I'm just a mindless, third grade reading level, console kiddie

Making PvP battles more important will most probably result in the cries for balancing all ships to increase thousandfold, and in the end all ships might get "balanced" so much that they all play and handle the same, exactly like it normally happens in competitive games where players just cry for "balancing".

so you dont want the pvp crowd to battle each other in a safe environment but rather have them hunt you down unwillingly? lol
