"Close Quarter Combat" - definitely not the direction I hoped ED would take from now...

I was always pretty excited with the new free updates FD announced for ED, even though neither "Community Goals" nor "Wings" nor "Powerplay" introduced the features from the DDA that I waited for - mostly a richer environment, more fleshed-out NPCs and NPC interaction, more varied missions including passenger game play etc.
The updates essentially only catered to the multi player crowd, IMHO.

But the following announcement of "Close Quarter Combat" finally managed to quench my enthusiasm for the future of ED completely:

So, a dog fighting PVP arena mode to satisfy CoD and BF players will be what FD puts it's focus on in the future. Can't say that I am thrilled. :(

I have no interest in the mode, but the existence of it doesn't bother me. I'll pretty much ignore it.

New content! Why would anyone complain about new add on contents if it doesn't affect the current gameplay? *puzzled*

Ah, yes... Then I can see why this wouldn't appeal.
It's said we're to get this later in the year, I think it likely we'll get more content by that time, hopefully some that also pleases those that wish to play solo as well is the open crowd.
/rare case of optimism

1) Wings. Multiplayer.
2) Community Goals. Competitive achievements. More grind.
3) Powerplay. Competitive achievements. Hints of guilds/multiplayer battles. More grind. Position decay when not playing.
4) CQC. Competitive PvP. Stepping further and further away from an immersive experience of living in the Elite universe.

Six months + since release. 3 or 4 major updates (CQC isn't major in size but fairly major in direction). No new depth of immersion or interesting branching, multi-role missions. No real mystery or intrigue. Apart from some cardboard cut-outs we can wave about at each other of course. Oh and one is a pretty little girl with blue hair. Yay! That's okay then.

Why would we complain about new content if it doesn't affect us? It does affect us. Time was spent on this stuff and not on anything meaningful that would benefit everyone.

"You don't have to play it." If a new content is ignored by half the player-base, is it new content at all? Where's the new content for the rest of us?

They could at least alternate focus groups.

Can't see whats wrong with it. Taking a break in the station, switch into the TV mode and watch some matches (in case you can do something like that, i really hope). As long as all playstyles are covered equally and none of the plattforms gets extra stuff that needs to be taken care of afterwards (which would lead in development time missing for other things / plattforms). Maybe i will even test my mettle in the Arena myself, rather unlikely - but who knows. The world won't end just because of Arena matches. Only thing i really hope, as said, is that they embed it properly into the existing game and add some features like said Spectator mode.

CQC is going to be fun, it doesnt take anything from the game, this is still the same game and more work will be done on it.

Its just not what you wanted, maybe next update will have what you want?

Theres no harm done here as this wont affect the rest of the game in any way, everyone can keep on going as they do now, OR they can check out this content too.

Yes, I know it's optional.

I don't complain because a PvP mode is added, I complain because it's added probably instead of something better they could have done in the same time (of which there is a lot in the DDA & DDF).

There have already been three updates that didn't exactly go in the direction I thought ED was aiming for when all those design decisions took place 1-2 years ago. But I though "no problem, it's cool, they'll do the cool stuff eventually."

But now they just keep adding multi-player/PvP updates and I begin to lose hope they will ever come back to introduce the really cool stuff many people wanted to so when supporting the game in the first place (passenger missions, persistent NPCs, NPC wings, contacts etc.)

You know, Care Quality Commission jokes aside, I welcome this announcement.

for:
  • Revenue for a great company
  • Increased development on a game which, at its core, we love
  • Could be fun
  • Condor
  • Diversity of players in the Galaxy
  • Potential spinoffs for iOS and android which would essentially be a cheap buy in to more diverse players who might take up the game
  • Longevity of the game
  • We get our bottoms handed to us in a more dangerous galaxy

Optional Against:

As someone who has very-little-to-none interest in combat, and actually a negative interest in PvP, this whole Arena Mode thing is wasted on ME. What I want is less combat, not more.

However... If other people enjoy this kind of thing, then... Right On Commanders!

First Space Risk and now Space Unreal Tourny! Nice for some but it's not really Elite, is it?

Nope, it isn't. This is all going a bit pear shaped for me.

I think I might join a few of the refugees at you-know-where. I'm not going to "run away from home" as it were, but for the forseeable future I've stopped buying skin packs and stuff. I can't support this game anymore when there are other space sims struggling for life.

It is all about Cash-flow. I agree with you but EVERYTHING in business is filtered through cash-flow.

Sorry, but CQC totally breaks my immersion factor of Elite. All this to compete with SC ?

I'd rather hoped they concentrated on filling the framework with all the content we'd love to see ...

Well... for as long as it's optional, I wouldn't mind seeing it.

After all, Options making a few Players happy isn't a bad thing - even if one doesn't plan to use it.
However... if this is something that every Player can be forced into (i.e. you won't have a choice, like... a boarding of your Ship or something), then all that turns into a bad direction.

But since I can't really imagine most Player controlled Ships offering alot of space for that anyway (outside of an Anaconda maybe) - my best guess is that this is maybe more Station-/Outpost-oriented?
Like the continuation of a Conflict Zone into contested Stations/Outposts?
That would make much more sense - and keep things Optional if properly implemented.

PS.
My main issue with FPS PvP close-quarter combat :

There are already too many very well-established and extremely highly developed shooters out there.
Any such mode will compete with what Players are already used to in terms of Quality from these existing FPS games.

I have a hard time imagining Frontier being able to add a similar Quality level of FPS to ELITE...
Some auto-aim helped Console Shooter maybe with action keys, quicktime events and some hopping from cover to cover maybe.

Agree but i am not going to jump ship. Instead of buying anything i liked to look of i will cut my purchases for merchandise until i see something the devs do for me.

i think its great! Once they got all the free add-ons on in place and ready for xbone then fingers crossed start filling in the gaps!
