Why us old timers may never be happy...

Back in the day, Frontier were limited by the technology at their disposal and so we as gamers quite naturally filled in the blanks with our own imaginations.

Fast forward to the present day and the opposite is true ...
Frontier are Limited only by their imaginations and no longer by the hardware / software.

The problem is of course that everybody filled in the blanks with different content! There's no way Frontier can match all of our expectations, let alone produce a game that is also relevant for a new generation of instant gratification gamers (obviously I am stereotyping). I get that they are trying but I think you run the risk of spreading yourself too thin and end up making a game that actually please nobody in the long term.

When you move onto something completely new with so many feature that still feel incomplete you have to start to wonder if that is the right move?

So that one time I had to do a planetary landing with a destroyed port-thruster*, on manual (because the auto pilot couldn'd handle the damaged thruster), carrying a passenger, was in my imagination? :p

Then the passenger got off and told me 'sorry, I can't pay you'.

* it really only let me turn left turns. Want to turn right? Flip upside down, then turn left, flip again.

Maybe because Braben was constrained by the technology of the day, we got the game "we wanted" and not him in the earlier releases. If the current incarnation was possible all those years ago maybe with all the powerplay crap etc, we'd have not bought it and be caught in his web 30 years later.

Sorry, the blanks were filled in for me by all the material Frontier produced over 2 years. They didn't deliver.

Old players and alpha backers need to let go of the promises and just embrace what Elite is becoming.

Y'all acting like FDev is your girlfriend or something "they lied, they lied" ...lol

The game has only improved since the release, just deal with the changes or find a new girlfriend to whine about.

Personally I had more than my money's worth when the initial Alpha was released to us.
I waited 30 years for that moment and I could barely control myself when it happened.
Everything after that has been an amazing, unimaginable, and perfect bonus.

Damn right.. I showed this to my Primary class earlier this year and explained this is what I used to play when I was at school...

Were you learning about 3d shapes? Was one reply! :p

My pennies worth....

The majority of the original kickstarter backers were old timers like myself and what we backed was the promise of a modern day version of Elite with super gameplay, sound and graphics.
We do have that but I feel that the game is evolving into something else and I can't help feeling that us old timers have been forgotten about as the game shifts towards younger players.
But as I've said many times, FD are in business to make money and have to cater for as many gamers as possible to get as many sales as possible.

However, I do play the game like the original. I don't play in a wing and I don't have anything to do with powerplay backing certain factions etc. as I think this is not what the original Elite was about. It was about being on your own with 100 credits and trying to get to Elite.

There is one thing that nobody can deny and that is that the game is absolutely beautiful. The stars, planets, stations and ships are all very well done. Yes, there are a few things I don't like but the game is getting better with each update and its going to be worth the wait when we get planetary landings.

I am happy, this arena thing will be great. Some times I need some instant gratification and normally I would fire up quakelive and get my fix. This will be like that I hope. Sometimes just getting all the HOTAS and DK2 setup just feels like a chore after a hard days night at work and home (kids etc) and a quick 40 minutes is not really a go with ED as it is now.
To play the normal ED I need a couple of hours to immerse and get organised etc. I dont often have that time!

I'm still happy (and I backed enough to have a big hunk of metal with my name on floating around out there). I've done a bit of everything and I've enjoyed most of it and I actually really like the concept of PowerPlay (it needs a few extras but I've been enjoying the plotting). There could be a few more additions (planetary landings, better missions and scavenging would be near the top of my list) but I've not played a game this solidly for years, and in the Rift it is a truly amazing experience.

It's the only thing that has come close to my feelings of playing Frontier for the first time - yet with the added benefit of combat that's actually fun.

The one irritation is people on this forum complaining about "the grind". It's only a grind if you choose to make it one - there's no end-game, no goal, so rushing to get the most credits at the expense of fun just seems ridiculous. I've got about 51m in assets (and I haven't reset my save since release) and I just keep trying new things - just swapped my FdL for a top-of-the-line Cobra to do PP stuff and it's a blast.

Personally, I like the ED in Solo and it is a fun to fly and fight in the Galaxy. I do not need Arena, I do not need PowerPlay etc.

The only thing I am really missing in ED is the STORY. Story, like it was in FFE or in Wing Commander series, back in 90's. Story which is a part of the Galaxy I play. Not just a part of GalNet articles. Here I see a lot of oportunities from the FD side to do better.

For example, those Unknown Artefacts was a really nice addition to game. It is a pitty that there was no further development of in-game content based on those UAs.

As a grumpy old man (yesterday I had a half hour conversation with my neighbor about how well my brassica's are doing, how's that for old) I'm really enjoying the game and I'm very happy with it.
