Players will require XBox Live Gold subscription to play multi-player E: D on XBox One.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE RELEASE OF THE XBOX VERSION, BUT ON THE TOPIC OF PAY TO PLAY VERSUS "FREE" TO PLAY.

Am I the only one seeing a roadmap revealed here?

Why would anyone be happy to pay a monthly subscription fee to play E: D on XBox, when it's subscription free on PC?

Please enlighten me.

UPDATE:
There's no subscription for the Xbox version, you can play solo with a silver Xbox Live account. For open and group play you need a Gold Live account.

Elite isn't subscription, XBox Live is subscription. Or have I missed something?

Because they dont have a PC? Because a few pounds a month is easier to afford then shelling out for a new PC?

Ah yes, but can you play E: D without the XBox Live subscription?

Good point. The only valid one, but a good one nevertheless. :)

Does it still have a Solo mode for those without Live?
Good question.

15 bucks a month for a live membership x 4 people in my house with me being the breadwinner Hence the reason I don't play the Xbox any more.

You can't play Xbox games online without an XLive Subscription, and seeing as E : D is always online then you will need an XLive Subscription. This is not the same as a pay to play subscription plan though; as XLive is used for all XBox games and also other services that Microsoft provides. None of the money for that monthly subscription is going towards E : D, it's all going to XBox. E : D is getting their money from skins and the game purchase itself, and any other micro-transactions or expansions they add.

I suggest we all stop screaming the sky is falling and chill out. Seen way too many people lose their mind today over this ordeal and it's really minor and blown out of proportion. I know it's a slightly different topic than the OP but I wish people would think for a moment. They're trying to test out a different platform; you can't test out an XBox version on PC just like you can't test a Mac version on PC; you have to test it on XBOne. Realize what you're actually asking for.

Maybe it can still be played without live. Just only give people the solo option. Would be kinda silly to buy a game only to be unable to play it because it's online only. Then again, it's also silly to blindly buy an online only game without research.

To be honest if you're gaming actively on an Xbox and think that you will be playing an online game without Xbox Live then you are living in a fictional world and there is not a thing anyone here in reality can do to help you, besides say this:

Oh? You don't like paying to play online games on the Xbox? Huh what a coincidence! I don't either! That is why i bought it on PC!!! >.>

I'm sorry but this thread makes me sad about humanity and people really need to wake the heck up and stop adding to the problem. If you don't like the way Microsoft does business on Xbox then sincerely do all of the video gamers on earth a favor and end your consumer unfriendly Xbox buying spree so that no one else has to pay to play regular games on the internet ever again!

Problem solved! Whew it took literally all my effort not to use an endless line of insults on a topic this painfully dumb. I'm going to go get myself something nice :).

This....

If it needs an XBox Live subscription, then my son may be disappointed as he won't be playing it on XBox One

Presumably like the PC version it will need a constant online connection which would require xbox live and a subscription. To be fair if this is an issue that issue should be with MS not FD.

GTA online is free to play (After purchasing GTA V) but needs xbox live.

Personally I don't have a problem with paying for xbox live, it has much better service delivery than the free provision of Sony PS. As always you get what you pay for.
If I get any down issues with Xbox live (including updates) I demand a refund. To be fair they pay. I do the same with Sky TV, who also fair play, offer part refund on that months subscription.

Controversially I would like ED to have a monthly subscription as it would apply some consumer pressure. As it stands having paid for the game in full if I stop playing ED if has little consequence.

You're probably pretty alone in that hope. I can't imagine many solo players are going to want to pay to play for a "solo mmo". I think they're doing a great job finding money elsewhere and I hope they continue to so that they don't have to force it back upon the consumer.

I don't see how "applying consumer pressure" is a good thing at all. The pressure should be on the developers to make a good game, not on consumers whether or not they want to pay a monthly fee. What are people smoking today?

I'm not screaming. Are you screaming? I'm merely trying to understand the nature of financing E: D.

Are you posting in the wrong thread?

What insults? Adding to what problem? I'm asking about the difference in payment on different platforms. Grab a cookie and settle down.

Because they don't have a PC perhaps. I Have both but will play Elite on PC only. Other games i prefer to play on Xbox.

It's gonna need a connection to the universe servers for market info, community goal info, etc. I'm willing to bet quite alot that MS are gonna consider that online play and WILL require Live to work.

Destiny, for example, was (is) playable without the full Live subscription. You could still see other players so the constant Internet connection was active (and you couldn't play without Internet, even "Solo"). You just couldn't co-op/PvP without the subscription.
