News David Braben Guest Blog - on Xbox One and CQC

Kickstarter backer here, and I have no problem with the console players getting the new CQC arena mode first.

I only wish they had followed my suggestion and called it "Arena, CMDR?".

It makes sense to have something extra to sell the xbone version so I will let this timed exclusive go and wish Frontier all the best in selling copies for the xbone.

However exclusivity, timed or not, which I absolutely hate is anti-consumer so I will be keeping a close eye on future ED content and hope that this kind of marketing doesn't set a precedent and exclusive content on the xbone becomes the norm.

Just spent an hour in the Xbox version. Its the same exact game besides the controller setup, which works pretty good. No substantial graphics setting as was suspected due to it being on xbox. It still awsome like the PC just cannot tweak graphics. Some bugs but nothing bad. Only thing is lag in the starting system but I left to go trade far away and the lag went away. No option to import a PC Commander so fresh starts for everyone. That hurts but no real learning curve for PC veterans. Starting money is 100,000 cr. good to upgrade to a hauler and set off trading to make the big bucks back.

It's a new game feature, and a good looking one. I'm an alpha backer and could not care less as long as it's a good, well thought out addition.

I love this game. Love it on my gaming rig and now love it on Xbox One.

Alpha backer too, wish I could use my PC commander still. Got 180 mil on PC.

Fairly certain CQC is Close Quarters Combat. There's likely nothing else it could stand for that would make sense.

Yes, finally figured this out when I got to watcht he XBOne promo video.

The title should actually say "Close Quarter Combat - CQC", or, at the very least, be mention in the very first post. Why doe sI have to ack in 3 threads, and finally figure it out 5 hours after I first see the initials "CQC", especially when I am actively trying to figure it out.

Initialisms and not explaining them at the very start is one of my biggest pet peeves. Makes me want to smack someone in the face with a wet tissue.

Anyway, it looks like fun. Hopefully, I'll be back form the far sid eof the galaxy and actually be able to mess around with it not too long after release.

Please define "support".

How about "Keeping the servers switched on"?

That costs money. Lots of it. Do you really think that sales and the KS money are going to keep them going indefinitely?

The alternative is pay-to-win. Is that really something you'd want to happen?

Tell me something about CQC, do you use your ship from the game or can you pick any ship?

Glad to hear that Frontier has a good strategy to hook in the console players, while offering the same, full game for folks who need more than killin'. It's a good plan and reflects the business' willingness to adapt to its customers needs and expectations among various market segments. Speaking of marketing, having Elite: Dangerous as Xbox One's first Early Access title draws attention and curiosity, so good move there. Seems like a good balance of doing business and doing right by consumers.

Some will inevitably disagree with me, and that's fine. My experiences have been overwhelmingly positive. Can't really complain too much. I can get a Steam Key if I choose, which Frontier did despite potential losses in their personal store. Don't see many game companies taking a loss to treat its customers fair. Makes it tough for me to get upset that CQC is XBox One exclusive atm. We'll get it inevitably, and in the meantime I'll be hunting aliens in the Formadine Rift :D

Finally. Thankyou!

Using initials to introduce something with zero explanation, just an assumption that everyone knows what it is, is just horrible communication.

Still curious as to what CQC actually stands for, but at least I now know what it is. At least the term "Arena Commander" gives one a clue...

The explanations Wednesday at E3 by the team of CQC

The more platforms Elite goes to the better for all of us I say.
In 5 years time I would like to think I will still be travelling the stars of Elite.

ED on xbox can only be good for the game, if you don't nit pick the small details like CQC is XBox One exclusive atm, and look at the bigger picture you will see this is a good move.
More player bases mean more players = good for the game, more players mean more money for ED = good for the game.
As PC players, all this means more future support (hopefully more content) = good for the game.
So all in all my summary is = good for the game.

This is a good move, I got no problems with it, more copies sold, more money to ED.
PC will still be the top dog and we will also get the XBONE features down the road.

We should be happy for the release as this will make more people aware of the game and maybe move some from console to PC.

Cheers,

Since Powerplay came out I'm losing hope, slowly but steady. I've only joined at Premium Beta stage (although I would have joined at KS stage if I was only in the position to do so at the time, sadly that wasn't the case), so I don't feel as offended as some of the other backers, but at the same time I've read most of the DDA and I was really excited to see these features implemented. Instead, we're being served something completely different, out of the blue, second time in a row now. And this second time we won't even be able to play it until some undefined "before end of the year".

I'm still enjoying Elite, but without the content described in DDA and the new PP stuff being a little bit on the "meh" side, the passion is slowly burning out... Disappointing at the very least to be perfectly honest, but I'm not giving up on Elite yet. With the strong emphasis on "yet". I try to be understanding and I still have some trust in Frontier, but I'm running on the last reserves now...

If we could at least get a confirmation that the DDA features are still in the pipeline and will be worked on next (none of this soon™ stuff, but a firm "NEXT"), it would calm many backers down. I think what we need now is reassurance that we haven't been forgotten about and we are going to receive the core Elite experience we all wanted, hoped and paid for.
