PVP arena mode confirmed - xBox Trailer

I'm very happy to see this. Not because I own an x-box, but because I see the new station/ship model assets and think of all the ways they could be used to craft new missions. For example, infiltrating one of these stations and destroying specific parts. Defending the station/clearing out intruders. Salvaging useful wreckage from a destroyed/abandoned version of the station...

So many possibilities!

None of which will ever see the light of day if what we have so far is anything to go by.

RIP in pepperoni any pvp outside of the arena or interaction
That's my worry, death of open world interaction and any reason for FSDrives to begin with.

I'm not worried about Frontier's interest in putting Elite on the xbox. My worry is that without a lot of optimization Elite may not run well on the xbox hardware. I envision xbox's overheating and bricking out. Xbox version means potential increases in revenue which in turn might mean possibly more content and that would be great but the quality of the content when the direction is steered toward the console is something to contemplate.

I'm on the fence about an arena mode and race mode. On one hand it adds something else to do which is fun and exciting, on the other hand it could detract from what powerplay was initially designed to do. I know players that dislike powerplay are probably rejoicing in the fact that it would die off completely but based on some of the critical discussion over powerplay it does have potential and should probably be looked at. If arena/race modes reward absurd credits, free repairs or passes on insurance costs altogether you might as well just remove credits from the game along with missions/reps/ranks. I'm not interested in an arcadish free mode that would abandon or eliminate Elite's basic structure. I like the idea of powerplay and that players would need to trade and do missions/farm in open world to make credits to afford participation in arena. For one it will keep open environments busy as opposed to a bunch of players sitting in one system waiting in a list. Secondly it will give new players something to look forward to. I earned and upgraded my Viper ok now I'm going to arena. Goes to arena --> Cool look at that upgraded Courier I want one of those too ---> goes to Open World and plays for it, does not sit in Arena queue grinding credits for a new ship. That would just reek like EVERY other game out there that implements that exact model and ruins its foundation. I hope this mode if it's really necessary is implemented well.

Good. If it's done right, this will give me a good reason to keep playing long after I'm bored with the main game. Being able to have a quick hour to fight others could be very fun.

lol, what a shameless trailer by FD giving how the actual game looks like. Almost nothing from DDA has been done so far and their PC release version plays like an early alpha with dull tabletop elements... shameless indeed.
I must agree. To me it feels like they are spending majority of their resources on tacking on random new games to the game instead of fixing the barebones and placeholder core game content.

Good for ED in general. Brings the diversity, players, money and the durability for the development for the future. I would be interested to know the number of players per platform, PC / Mac / XB1 and later PS4

The CQC is to get your quick PVP fix and skill training. Those players will venture into the open game mode too.

We definately need easy ways for CMDRs to meet up for PvP.

Back in Alpha/Beta we had Eranin, which was basically the only Conflict Zone. You could turn up there and almost always guarantee a fight. It was great fun.

But since then, Conflict Zones now pop up at random and their in huge numbers, so the chance of encountering another CMDR there is unlikely.

Powerplay has thankfully introduced Military Strike Zones, so at long long last you can go somewhere and have a good chance of PvP combat. HOWEVER, no matter how successful you are (at destroying enemy ships) you get no real reward so you actually lose CR so have to go off elsewhere to fund it. Annoying!

If CQQ can add locations/means for easily accessible PvP encounters, of most ship types... YES PLEASE!

I have seen whole games ripped apart by the arena mode.

It killed WAR which killed Mythic when EA closed it down. In the WAR beta test Mythic had to keep on closing the areans due to nobody testing anything else and when the game went live you would just see people in the towns waiting for their arena to start.

you think a mode people love so hard killed the game? HAHA, NO!

there are MANY reasons why war failed but scenarios are not amongst them.

CQC is a separate place to do PVP Arena stuff. In order to boost PVP in open mode they have to improve Powerplay so players of different factions are more likely to meet each other. Also make it rewarding with more credits.

I suspect it'll only be available with the small ships judging by the trailer. This would make sense as those ships are fairly balanced and currently don't have any purpose in the main game.

All I could see from the trailer was a sad reflection of what consoles have become: dumbed-down, PvP orientated frag-fest gaming machines with little to inspire anyone. I feel that FD have lost direction ATM, and are dragging ED on PC down the console route. It's all very well for FD to cater to different gaming demographics (CQC for PvP'ers, PP for those who like stat-based games), but since the DDF was screwed up and thrown into the bin after implementing the bare minimum, we've seen a shocking lack of focus on what the meaning of the Elite should be, and nothing for those players who don't give one iota about PP and CQC.

But, should I be upset that consoles have been given access to content before Alpha, PB, and Beta backers? Well, yes. We were promised access to all beta builds of new content. It's as simple as that. To cap it all, those players who bought ED after the Beta phases (and therefore not entitled to test) have also been slapped in the face. Why? Because most of them have asked FD to join in testing for a small fee. Was that so hard to do?

Having said all that, and despite my frustration, I fully understand why CQC has been introduced: to bring in more revenue. Let's face it, despite being a dumbed-down format, console users bring in a lot of cash. And now that CQC and PP have been implemented, I hope that FD concentrate on immersion with 1.4 and bring PC users the content that most of us can't wait to see.

xbox getting it first..... despite pc people backing the game on kicstarter....

We paid a small fortune at kickstarter to get the game built after a 30 year wait. FD built it - contract fulfilled.

FD aren't forever in our debt - they have already held up their end of the deal by creating the game (that's more than Godus managed)

despite FD litteraly saying that xbox version will never take priority over pc version....

Source ?

I'm quite happy for xbox to get the CQC exclusive. No doubt PS4 will get some sort of exclusive at their release. No worries, I can wait - I'm playing the long game.

So Xbox and maybe PS4 get exclusives...it will generate income....that will pay the wages of the folks who will create future content for everyone.

After 30 years, I'm not going to spit my dummy out over things like this.....its all good for the long term future of Elite.

Exactly the same for me, they have simply not finished the core of the game yet, and they need to get it done.

We should have Multi-drop trading missions, Wing missions (including trade with escort missions), people passengers for the Orca, exploration needs an overhaul (I just popped out for 10,000 ly's to go sight seeing, what a joke), Tracking bounty missions, where you have to go to other stations to get info, check the stations ship data base see if your ship has been there and generally do real research on your enemy...

Power play is not finished and completely unbalance (definitely) and implemented wrong, IMO.

Now they are doing CQC and still the main core of the game is still so barren and they wonder why people get upset.

I saw an Eagle, a Sidewinder, a Condor, and a Cobra. Possibly more. But out of that lot already, the Cobra is clearly the superior ship, no contest. In any form FFA or team PvP arena mode, that doesn't work, unless there'll be arbitrary limits, like "only 1 Cobra per team", which I can't imagine going down well with most people (hands up who wants to fly the Condor facing a Cobra). :D
