You think rares are rare? where the heck is platinum?

Indeed. However it makes it quite rare for traders. I have also seen it very little when trading.

Man, i just felt like stuffing mine gear on my Cobra and hit the roids!
I wish we had a rental storage in stations so we can offload our weapons and modules and change into a miner, and then come back and store the mining gear and change into a fighter again instead of constantly buying/selling our stuff.Wow. Great advice dude, thanks. Not that I haven't traded myself a 150mil Python or anything, but thanks I surely didnt know that. I've been to hundreds of stations, and not one has shown any station to export platinum (that section is always empty)

Never saw it somwhere for Sale, always tought its only available through mining only but reading this Thread it seems there are Stations who sell it. Might give it a go and look for it as a little Challenge.
I have never seen platinum come up on the 'imported from' section when you highlight the commodity. It just remains blank because it doesn't seem to get imported from anyone. I have yet to see any station selling platinum.
Agreed, at least a little incentive for anyone stomaching the way mining currently works, let 'em have that platinum i say.
I hit a USS with about 10 plats floating there. That was a good day lol.
Ahhh I wondered who my competitor was, nice little earner that route..... paid for all the weapon upgrades on my viper... especially when I got a palladium related mission.... 30K in profits and still had some left over for regular sale.
Bought a nice beam laser with that cash....
Never seen platinium though
If you find a system that has a station selling platinum, or palladium, quickly buy up a mining laser and refinery and start mining there. Look for the metallic planet ring or asteroid belts.

Forgive my doubt here, folks, but for some to say, "Oh, I've seen it around" or "I have it in my hold" or "I could tell you but I won't" or some other such noise is unhelpful at least and trolling at worst. The fact remains that platinum is rarer than the rares, because when you know where a rare comes from you can go there and get the commodity. Platinum seems to be nowhere on any kind of regular basis, at least not that we can tell from this thread.
Slopey's says there is no platinum within 250 LY of Shinrarta Dezhra. I find that to be completely unrealistic. In a game that is supposed to at least try to mirror realism that just smacks of contrivance. What the heck is Frontier up to? WHERE'S THE BEEF?!?

It is simple. Platinum and some other materials are supposed to be mined, not traded.
Actually, the missions regarding Platinum have a mining icon on Bulletin Boards.

Surely the point is that you have to mine it, same as with the two rare ores Painite and Osmium (?) - the only way to obtain the items is to actually mine it. Stations that buy it (them) do so to use it (them) not to trade it on.
So I believe the idea is that these commodities are the "carrot" to encourage mining careers.

Because these missions keep coming up. This isn't the only thread where folks are talking about Platinum being impossible to find. Why is the stuff even mentioned as a "commodity" if it isn't available as a commodity item? Why isn't it just used as a mining mission bribe and keep it off the metals list? Why even have a commodity price for it if the stuff never shows up anywhere? None of this makes any sense. Really, if Frontier want to have certain materials restricted to missions then please, how about treating them that way? Don't make us whiz away valuable time trying to find something that simply isn't there to begin with.

Might I suggest having a look at trade dangerous. Its a very powerful tool. The buy command allows you to search for an item or ship.
