Adults vs kids in Elite Dangerous

This not not a post that I disagree that there are kids in Elite Dangerous in open play that is something for the parents of them to decide
But how I'm as adult protected against them or they against me.
I mean as a adult in open play in text and voice chat I communicate different or do some roleplay and what to adult to adult is not inappropriate can be towards a child.
So i wonder how when I communicate or rp in Elite Dangerous I can know i have to deal with a kid and i can then decide to keep voice and text chat closed.
In that way we are both not harassed

Its not a problem. Kids today play other games with a toxic community behind every game. Try some Dota, LoL or even CS:GO, listen and watch some streams. You will never again think that Elite may be bad for kids compared to other multiplayer games with voice comm & chat out there.

The problem is that most parents don't understand video games. Mine surely did not. I'm not really a kid anymore at 29 and have two kids of my own. But most parents I see today got there kids between 25 and 40 and have no clue what video games or internet is about. And Elite is harmless compared to call of duty or gta so their parents giving at least a little thought about it would rather buy their kids Elite instead of something brutal.
SARCASM And you surely don't need to supervise your kids when they play a game that is not dragged through the media as being inappropriate. /SARCASM

I have to ask what you are doing or saying that is inappropriate for a child? :O

The game carries a parential warning i believe, but there are kids, and FD are a family friendly company. The forum rules are strongly minor friendly, and the game rules state some basic things like no abusive language etc, and people can have warnings or temp shadowbans for abusive language in game.

I mean, if you are questioning people's parentage in game, you might want to watch that, because if someone captures it, you could be reported for it.

Wait, so when I see people claim that they disable any ship that refuses to communicate with them, they could be shooting out the drives of an 11 year old with caring parents? Man, I hope these kids don't play PowerPlay, because I've seen a lot of people brag about how they're taking out allied ships who aren't communicating and toeing the line when pushing PowerPlay assets.

I think you will find that there will be no chance that FD will make it possible to tell if a CMDR is an adult or a child, due to data and child protection issues. Also it is quite clear in the EULA and Terms and Conditions that any inappropriate language in the comms can get you punished.

This is why I NEVER use bad language on the comms. It doesn't matter if you think that all kids swear these days, just think how you would feel if you heard an adult using foul language to one of your kids on the street or at school.

My 5yr old daughter play's ED in open sometimes. I just get her to a RES and then hand it over. So she talks to random commanders which is funny to listen to.

It is perfectly sensible to allow parents some control over their offspring's safety online. Many ISP's will put in control over ports, time allocations, monitoring etc as a paid service. If ultra-conservative parents want their offspring to be completely safe from everything online, then they'll have to pitch-fork the router and stop paying the mobile phone and ISP bills. Even that won't work 100% as enterprising young minds will quickly find the nearest laughably secured wireless network (and that is pretty much all of them) and enjoy the lulz.

Vulnerable people do need to be protected online, and everywhere else. But it's just not always possible.

I wouldn't be quite so sure about that...

At 28 I was playing the original Elite. At 58 I'm playing this one. I've been using computers since the ZX81 and I've been online since 1994. My kids can handle computers and online gaming just fine as can my older grandkids. But curiously, when they do have a computer problem they all come to me for advice. I may be the exception but I know plenty of people in a similar situation.

Reminds me of a friend back in WoW who was used to let his young ones play when it comes to fishing... hmm, he would have made a fine Imperial.. :D

HAHAHAHAHA! Wait what? ... so if i meet a dad and i tell him that his parenting royaly sucks i might get reported huh? Oh my, i better watch out then because there are alot of bad parents out there. Or are you saying if i question the parenting i might get reported? Only then might i be in trouble? Im allowed to question peoples parenting how ever i like, they dont have to respond you know. Dumbest comment i saw so far this year.

Come on, learn something from your children. They often know vile language better than we do and online they forget about their manners we taught them (as they always do, when no adults are around).

The game is PEGI 7 meaning it is deemed suitable for 7 year olds. It's labelled as such in the Steam and Frontier store (did anyone notice that it's on sale btw?). The Xbox version is labelled as Teen. Also the EULA warns you about using appropriate language. It's not hard to moderate your language in public or private chat with those you do not know. Well, it's not for some people.

No, that's not what i said. Feel free to tell someone their parenting sucks in game (how you know anything about the quality of their parenting is a different question)... just as long as you are not abusive about it.

There is a group in ED for older gamers 30+. I don't really play MP games much but remember when xbox live beta came out. Moto GP was a lot of fun playing with adults. But when kids turned up they would generally be quite irritating. Either in language or behaviour. Like going the wrong way around the track.

If you play ED with role play in mind. I can definitely see immersion going out the window very easily if you meet the wrong person. If you are a PvE type player then there's always Mobius which is a group that seems to attract older gamers. At least I've never met anyone younger than 20 there.
