What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Get what you can afford or prefer. Enjoy the game. I'm just glad I don't need a Lenslok like they had on the Speccy version!

Oh my god you've just brought back a terrible nightmare :(
yes believe me it was bloody awful and sometimes it took ages to get right on my tv, and all i wanted to do was play the game arhhh:mad:

goes and lies down ....

It's playable with a 360 controller, but I don't like it very much. Joystick highly recommended.

Ah ok, thank you, so I start with a XBox 360 because I have already spent enough money to support the game in Kickstarter, and also starts to upgrade my computer (motherboard, processor, ram, power supply, and soon, graphics card and processor fan, and therefore XBox 360)

I've only used the 360 controller so far as I'm waiting for the Saitec X55 (looks way sexier than the X52) and it works okay. The main limitation is that there just aren't enough buttons to bind everything I'd like to.

Thus it will be very sufficient for an amateur as me. With the keyboard, the mouse and the controller 360, I will be able to manage

I started on keyb+mouse, went to XB360 controller (already had one) and have just got a T-flight hotas. It is, of course, much better on the joystick & throttle but I still find lack of buttons. I'm toying with the idea of somehow fixing the controller in front of the stick to give extra buttons and axes for headlook / target selection. Messy and hacky but cheaper than an uber-stick!

It will be possible use the keyboard, the mouse and the controller 360 simultaneously ?

If you've got enough hands :) The alpha options let you bind controls to any connected device, mixing and matching. There are currently some issues where ED sees some devices as the "same" (pedals and the Warthog, I think?) but those will get fixed. Certainly keyboard, mouse, controller & stick can all be used at the same time if you really wanted to.

The Warthog throttle and stick have an issue where the first 19 buttons on both "overwrite" each other i.e. binding Button 1 on the stick and then binding Button 1 on the throttle afterwards will un-bind the stick mapping. But the axes work perfectly. I think the rudder peddle issue ends up getting identified as roll or something but I guess a similar type of issue: detection of multiple discrete DirectX input devices.

Could you use an uber cheap usb numeric pad and just reassign the buttons?

Something like this maybe?

Just a thought.

Hello, all.

Just joined up and have purchased / downloaded the Alpha release.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using the Thurstmaster warthog?

I have an opportunity to acquire a used unit (in good condition).

I'm sure a read a thread in the past which outlined some problems with the multiple USB inputs but cannot find it at the moment.

general consensus seems to be that the X52 is a safe bet but I've used a warthog in the past and was really impressed with the build etc...

Thanks in advance...

Ok thank you! It will be perfect for me. I thought of using the controller 360 to pilot the spaceship and the keyboard and the mouse to use the computers in the game, screens and everything else.

I'm sure you'll come up with something that suits you :) The computers etc are currently only accessed in "UI-focus" mode though, which you toggle on/off with a button / key. So you don't really fly at the same time as changing the computer settings (weapon loadouts, system priorities, target lists etc) - your view is completely focused on the computer screen with no forward view.

Incidentally, this is something I hope gets fixed with proper multimonitor support. I want the side monitors displaying the computers and be able to interact with them without a "UI focus" mode being required. It depends on how important to FD's gameplay vision this taking you away from your flying view is, though. They might want tinkering with computers to be something you don't do mid-combat.

The Warthog is truly beautiful piece of kit and well worth getting but one issue to be aware of is that it doesn't have a twist grip like other joysticks have.

There is currently an issue with multiple input but as that will be fixed (sooner rather than later I hope) I consider it a minor inconvenience.

Once the multiple input issue has been fixed I can see all the throttle base switches being used and assigned to their equivalent space going control.

The Lave Radio (laveradio.com) guys have offered to help with any issues with joystick setup I believe.

I am a new x52 Pro user - It is by far the best joystick I have ever used. It made a huge difference to how flying felt (ie it feels right now) and plenty of buttons.

I haven't used the x52 (I heard the joystick center-springs were a tad weak) but that again has everything you need.

Personally I don't think I would want to be without the twist axis regardless of the joystick. (I have Roll mapped to mine)

Thanks very much for the input.

I think I'm going to go with the X52 (seems to be somewhat of a shortage here in the UK at the moment).

Good points on the twist-grip. Seems it would be a pity to be without that function.

I'm much more curious about suitability of the Steam controller than any other gamepad. I hope someone gets a hold of one and posts about it!

Sounds like the Saitek x52 pro is the most popular choice.

Done, just bought off ebay.

Now I just need Elite Beta to use it with ....and you know I've got to buy an actual computer to play it on :D
