Watch out explorers! They be pirates in deep space!

So at HR 1185 (Nearby Pleiades Nebula) I ran into a strong signal source, and boy it was packed.

Note to self, stay away from them, almost lost this nice system.

Is it intended for pirates to be roaming in.... really deep space?

Note: There's nobody roaming in supercruise, just a bunch of USS.

To be honest it is not in deep space, it is around 1000 LY from civilised space and less than 30 mins for a long range ship such as an ASP with 27+ LY jump. I have seen NPC ships in SC around 600LY.

I would say deep space starts at 2-3000 LY and that would only be that start.

The center of the galaxy is 25,000 LY and some of us have been the other side at 50,0000 LY and I went round following the western spiral arm in a wide arc.

Never mind 1000LY, I feel sorry for the pool souls who got blown up in Sag A. I'm heading there myself and am worried someone will be there. And I cant go solo as I am doing the Buckyball run.

I think the buffer area roughly 500Ly outside human-controlled space is still considered "shallow water" and is lightly populated with opportunistic pirates trying to stay off the radar in a very general fashion. I like this, and I wish there was more to find in this little neutral zone between populated territory and the deep dark black beyond it. Unsanctioned colonies that don't appear on the galaxy map, black ops military wings doing something shady where there's no witnesses, gold rush planets full of miners who'd rather nobody "back home" knew about their find, that sort of thing.

Don't worry it will be worth the wait, I have just got back from a trip round the galaxy via Sag A* and the gravity lensing on it is fantastic. Also you get 600k+ for a detailed scan of that and the partner star.

Watch out for neutron stars and black holes on the way in as you will get dropped quite close, 5 million KM for black holes and a couple of times I got put a whole lot closer.

Just yesterday I think it was, I frame shifted to a system that had two yellow stars bigger than the distance between each other. My ship ended up warping THROUGH the first star and right in front of the second and I immediately began overheating because I was sandwiched between them.

Today I ended up finding a matching heart attack system, but didn't get stuck in between the two this time.

Oh, uh, just curious, has anyone found a pulsar?

Crab pulsar, in the Crab nebula :)

There are plenty of neutron stars out there. Unless something has drastically changed, none of them have the big accretion disk/plasma jet features one associates with pulsars.

At least, no one has reported anything like that. Of course, I suppose, that's to be expected with those rapidly rotating plasma jets and massive amounts of gamma rays from synchrotron radiation. :)

Heh, that's what I was hoping to see. a system with a strobe light.

Yes I have been to the crab pulsar but it doesn't actually spin and pulse light, it's pretty much like just another neutron star except it's within a nice green nebula. I was pretty disappointed but if you do go to visit you might see quite a few black holes on the way with my name on them :p

Ya I went on a quest looking for pulsars when the whole UA sound thing was going - went to several - they just show as regular neutron stars in game ... and no they dont have a discernible audio signature

Coming back from a round trip of the galaxy I found one with the accrection disk, it is quite visible on the galactic map and somebody else had got the first find.

As for neutron stars and black holes, there are some near to inhabitated space but there are an swful lot near the center of the galaxy.

OOSCS AOB SO-Z E531 and EULAIRGH BA-A F117 are in a region where you have a ton of them.

I raised this one before, kind of breaks the immersion to find a bunch of pirates thousands of light years from anywhere. What the heck are they doing, holding a pirate court?

Yesterday I made a big mistake. I went to LEMBAVA after my 3 month exploring trip to the center of the galaxy. I was approx. 100 ls away from Goldstein Starport as another CMDR interdicted my ship. He was in a fancy neon-colored Orca. Set a collision course to my ship and hit me right in the center. Losing is part of the game, I think I've lost more than 100 MCr because I've tried to reach the port in open-mode.

I knew it all along but I tried it anyway. :D

They probably wondered the same about you being there.

Point being the further you move away from occupied space the lower the chance of meeting someone else, but never 0 chance .. after all, you're there to begin with ;)

this man with golden orca killed me in Lembava few days ago too. luckily i have sold my data sooner. would be nice to hunt him in wing
