X series

Never played it and decided to give this series a try.. that said the series is kind of old and though I am interested in the story should I start with X Beyond the Frontier or just read up on the story line and skip ahead to one of the later games?

You should skip ahead to X3. Storyline isn't one of Egosoft's strong suits. Also you could skip X: Rebirth entirely, unless you got it cheap on Summer Sale. :)

I'll just post in here so I can lazily hitch a ride to the 'other games' forum when the thread gets moved.

It'll save me having to go to the main forum menu.

Don't mind me <pulls out newspaper>

I'd hop straight in with X3: TC, or X3: AP, patch them up then be prepared for 500 hours to disappear forever.

I'd highly recommend monitoring your progress to and not just using time skip and leaving your PC on or other cheesy strats, its good fun to compare yourself to the other players and see how much money they had at X hours in.

I'd also recommend starting with X3:TC ... in my opinion, the best in the series.

X3 TC for the best version (and the spitfyre fighter), there is no story line worth talking about.

No lollygagging

Wow, I did just that a couple of years back - started at the first and worked my way up to X3.

The earlier versions are really basic considering current days games - but was really fun for me, as it brought back memories from those days. Not sure how much experience you have with old games, it was quite enjoyable for me.

If you are not into that, I would say start with X3:TC as well. Very nice graphics, considering the age of the game - and ridiculous depth, especially with the approved mods that are out there.
There are plenty of unapproved ones too, but they can break the game - as in making it too easy.

I'm not sure how fixed Rebirth is, but I wouldn't bother until got tired of the X3 versions - and that will not happen until several hundred hours played ;) And yes I meant tired, not bored.

I agree, it is the more 'sandbox' of the series.

Albion prelude added a faactional war, which could end up inhibiting your play a little.

There are also some amazing mods available for X3 (some of them require AP).

X3 Ai ships are how I wish it was in ED - every ship you come accross has a purpose, you can literally follow trade ships trading goods across multiple systems and watch them dock and buy/sell...then pirate them! :)

I spent many hours watching and getting involved in skirmishes and all out battles in sectors, it was beautiful.

Alright sounds like X3 TC it is, thanks!
If you want to follow the storyline from the start, then yes, start with XBTF ...
I love the start of that game ... "We are asssking questions ... Who, are you?" (it makes sense when you play it)

If you're not too bothered about the storyline, X3:TC

EDIT: It actually taught me what a credit is worth ... I'll not spoil it, if you want to know, play the start of XBTF

I loved the X series, played them for years when there was no modern Elite.

Have to say X:Tension will always be my favourite one but I'd recommend a newcomer to the game to start with X3:TC or X3:AP.

Warning!! Avoid X:Rebirth. (It's not called X: by long time X-series fans for nothing)

The control system and keyboard layout is horribly done. UI has never been their strong suite. That being said if you can overcome all of that the game is brilliant. Designing your own space stations and having your own ships out there picking up and delivering and earning for you is quite fun to manage. If it were only better designed. Under the hood it works great though and combat isn't too bad.

I have the X superbox, the plan was to use my t16000m to play the games.

Indeed I rolled I watched the intro and first bit of BTF, is there much more story to see after this or is it just a credit grind?

X3TC

mods
hacks
scripts
fun

What mods do you suggest and what do they do?

I used "combat mod" and slightly modifyed it, it only affects guns making them more beutiful, pleasant to hear, changes some of their stats, and some scripts i cant't recall their names now. To do something weird i used scripts sometimes.

On egosoft forums i saw many mods: alternative starts, plot mods, cockpits (there are also a bunch of mods for X-Rebug).
