help on assassination mission

Hi there,
it's the first time I played since PP and the first time I've taken on an assassination mission (apart from the rank-up missions).
I've flown to the system my target is supposed to be in, I track it down in SC and interdict it, but then, in normal space, my target isn't wanted and doesn't fire on me either (as I was used to from the rank-up assassination missions). So I just killed my target but got a bounty for murder.
Is there any way around this? Is this always the way it goes?

I have another mission of that type running, clock ticking down, so would be happy about any insights on this! Thanks in advance.

Some assassination targets are wanted some aren't. Pirate lords, criminals, escaped prisoners, rebels and terrorists usually have bounties as do most deserters.

Weird for rank up missions but me for example, I accepted pirate missions who ask me to kill osme civilians. Good pay, worth the bounty.
But if your target is one specific NPC and is not wanted, it is unlikely that you won't get any bounty.

assassination is a dirty business. don't worry about the bounty, in a week it will decay to a fine which you can pay off if you want. the bounty only applies to the system you got it in btw.

Okay, thanks for all the replies.
I'm worrying more about the rep decay when getting a bounty than being wanted in a system.
Is that something to worry about now? I'm not yet familiar with the rep changes since PP.

In that case, you'll probably want to pay attention to what minor faction your target is part of and try and avoid assassinating anyone linked with a major faction (this can be tricky but you canusually figure it out).
