Magical space adventure

After six months of casual mindless grind in a Type 6 (month on, month off) I suddenly found I could afford a Vulture and kit it out decently.

Suddenly I am literally invincible for PvE purposes. I can take out Elite Anacondas with no risk or damage despite being merely Competent myself. Having taken six months to accumulate about 7 million credits, I then earn about 3x that in the space of two weeks from RES sites and combat bonds.

So obviously that's very, very boring after about five hours of identikit farming.

So I use my cash to kit out an Asp for exploration and go looking for the same stuff the tin foil hat brigade are obsessing over. I head to a system that needs a special permit. Pop next door and start greasing up the faction who will give me the permit.

After reliving my first months of dragging single tons of vegetables around, I rashly take on an assassination mission from them (the only one to pop up that had more than Low reputation influence).

I find the mark and it's an Anaconda. Dammit. It's only Novice, though. So I have a pop. Follow him in SC until he drops then follow his wake.

It's a draw. He doesn't fire a single weapon for the first three-quarters of the battle so I get him down to about 40% hull but then have to flee as I'm down to 30% myself. Head to nearest output and repair, launch back out.

Spot him again. Magically, he's now lost his rank. He's Mostly Harmless. But he's also fully repaired. Follow him back and forth between the star and a planet seven times (I don't have an interdictor).

Despite the loss of rank, he now decides to use his weapons for the whole battle. I get his shields down and land a few good hits on his powerplant but have to run again. Barely make it away alive with 10% hull.

On my way to the station, I see him again, magically in a different part of the solar system. He's still Mostly Harmless but has somehow repaired all of his hull.

That's my last battle with the space fairies. I'm no match for their transformation spells. I also realised that the only way to get any combat challenge once you own a Vulture is to either deliberately fly a stupid choice of ship for combat, or possibly go for PVP.

Back in a few months I guess.

I reset my save a couple of weeks ago, I play about an hour an hour and a half a day. I'm currently hunting anaconda's in a diamondback scout and have assets of about 17 million, downsize your ship for more fun.

Would it really make any difference if I reset my save? To progress with the only thing I haven't tried yet - unlocking a permit system - I'm doing the same missions I'd be doing as a Harmless Sidewinder anyway.

I was bored so I reset (like I did regularly in the originals) now I'm not bored. It worked for me.

Just tried again to win favour with this faction.

They gave me a mission to a neighbouring system to assassinate 1 bounty hunter. (They'd previously sent me to the same system to hunt pirates.)

I jump there and go to the nav point. Few ships around. One shows up as a bounty hunter with a bright red MISSION TARGET or some such on the scanner panel. I attack and destroy it.

What I didn't check was that that bounty hunter belonged to the same faction that gave me the mission. I'm now wanted by the faction that sent me out in the first place.

I jump back to the faction's home station, where I'm now wanted for doing what they told me. I'm scanned on the way in, jump away, jump back, they've forgotten all about me, scanned again, jump out, rinse and repeat four times, every time despite only being away for about 30 seconds they've completely forgotten who I am and don't notice this wanted Asp pitching up every minute or so until I'm inches from the letterbox. Every time.

Eventually I get into the station and land. Nobody thinks to scan me while I'm inside the station.

I turn the mission in. They accept the death of one of their own hunters as a successful completion of their own mission. I lose rep with the faction for killing one of them but also gain it for fulfilling the mission. But I'm now wanted in their system for doing exactly what I was asked, making it a lot harder to progress with getting a permit from them. And I can't pay off the bounty for 4 days.

Alt-F4. Time to browse the Steam summer sale again.

Not literally. You aren't literally invincible. You may consider yourself practically, or effectively, invincible, but you are not literally invincible. If you left your ship in the middle of a Conflict Zone and did nothing, it would be destroyed. If it was literally invincible that couldn't happen. Just saying. Literally is so often misused. Like unique. Carry on.

Rep always given for pedantry. I need the solidarity :)
