Elite: Dangerous gameplay discussion thread

Here's my $0.05AU.

I basically want the original game, but with:
- More vertices on the wireframe models. No fancy curves or wings or anything silly like that, as I liked the hard-edged clean lines of the original elite ships and would prefer a slightly more detailed versions of ships but with a similar style.
- Larger structures, ships. So large that they have docking bays (or multiples of). Remember the starting scene of star-wars? I want see a massive ship and (if its friendly) fly into its hanger and dock to trade.
- Shaded polygons would be totally fine with me for ships. Actually I'd even go so far as to say that most ships be shaded in a dark colour (in regular space) and that the only bright thing you would see would be glare of the their engines or lights shining through windows if you were close enough. The Last thing I would want to see is rainbow coloured ships. Space is vast, dark and mysterious.
- Beautiful looking planets. Here we can go crazy with what ever the latest graphics techniques are. I want to drool every time i arrive at a new planet.
- Make the sun at system be the correct light source. I want to dart in and out of the shadows of planetary bodies, eclispes etc. And see the dark & light sides of ships when dogfighting etc. Fly in and amongst a fleet of capital ships and hide in their shadows... that sort of stuff.
- Be able to enter the atmosphere and dock in space-ports/cities planet-side (both above and below oceans)
- Repeat: Space is mostly black.
- Giant (and I mean GIANT) planets, some so large that you must avoid or go around else get crushed. (Same with massive suns). Not sure how I feel about black holes though...
- Generation Ships.
- Ability to have a homeworld (with garage) to store ships as I get wealthy.
- Ability to buy many types of ships. Some days I want to be a bounty hunter, others I want to be a smuggler, other days I want to be a cop and patrol around orbiting space stations, other days I just want to shuttle people from orbiting space stations down to cities on the surface and back again.
- Stay with the procedurally generated universe but seed it with new races for me to discover over time.

Thats enough for now, it's late and way past my bedtime.

I'd also like to see weather on planets, wind, rain, snow, fog :)

what the hell is 'Kickstarter'?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

A web site set up so that people can propose new game ideas and request directly from the public support and funding thus bypassing software houses. If after the end date the project meets it's goals everyone gives their money and the project goes ahead.

They also have differing levels of "donations" that in return give you something in return. (From a simple digital copy of the game, Alpha and Beta access, all the way up to creating something in the game itself)

What happens if we donate £100s (collectively) and the target still isn't reached?

Then the project is cancelled and you're not charged on your card.

The cut off date (from memory) is Jan 4th meaning if they reach the target then your card is charged the pledged amount and the project begins - if not then nothing happens and you lost nothing.

Of course the project could fold in the future so any amount pledged is a risk - but it's one I am personally willing to take. (I had some spare cash and figured why not take the risk)

Jan 4th? That sounds like it's cutting it a bit fine - what's the total so far?

You could click the link you know and see for yourself :p

As at 11.43pm (UAE time) 5190 people have pledged 242,080 pounds out of a needed 1.25 million with 59 days to go. (Projected amount, if the rate continues as it does, is 7 million.)

Apologies OP for derailing the thread.

Yes - weather conditions would be great, as would similar things in space that affect your scanners / visibility. Certain types of nebula for instance could render scanners inoperable meaning you rely on your eyes and have to look about manually. Great place for pirates to hide if there is a kind of fogging element - imagine the following:

- You're doing your usual trade run but this time you receive a distress call that's only a short hop away
- Upon approach you find a stranded ship; venting atmosphere; and your scanners say there is no one on board but the cargo is full of riches
- Thinking of possible salvage opportunities you close in
- Out of no where (well, behind a moon; out from inside a nebula; what ever) a fleet of "hungry" pirates appear and you're the main course.

Hmm .. so many possibilities.

My bad.

OK - so the projected amount is £7m? Wow....

YES !!! I LIKE that !!!!!

I have to admit I'd like to be able to step out of my ship and explore space stations and planets on foot to some extend. In a way I'd like to see some kind of cities like in GTA. I know this will probably be too much and I have yet to think about purposes for those elements of gameplay to legitimate them, apart from being atmospheric.

In 'Star Citizen', it's clear you can get out of the ship and move around - do we see Elite 4 doing the same thing? And is Star Citizen set in the real Universe - there could be some real competition, which is great news for the Space Sim genre!

It would be nice.

My ultimate ambition is to play a game where you can disembark from your ship and interact with the infinite amounts of moons planets and stations but right now I would like to see me being able to create my in game avatar and walk around my ship checking out my crew members.

I love the ideas that others have had about more science elements. I remeber frontire teaching me about certain things like the real star systems in the game. In real life we would be seeking out rare minerals and gasses for fuel so maybe some scientific but also fun parts to the game. That way young players will learn something about the universe just like I did when I played frontire.

isnt this coming in one of the expansions? iirc Braben said he wants to do it right, with a real "point" to is rather than "because I can" and with that in mind it is a lot of work to do well, so wont be in initial release but will be coming later.
