Latest DEV update from Michael Brookes is live (19/6/15)

I see he's still pushing the "better fit for xbox" . PC has higher frame rates, more precise control method, and a more experienced user base... I honestly can't understand why xbox would be a "better fit".

The reality is that it has to do with an exclusive marketing deal with MS, not "better fit" nonsense.

He's not saying that the Xbox is a better fit to CQC than PC he's saying that Xbox is more suited to a fast paced, instant-on PvP arena than some of the more open-ended/sedentary aspects of Elite. CQC is a better fit to Xbox than, say, exploring.

I think there has been a lot of negativity re the xbox release and even if some points may well be valid, I think Michael makes a really good point about the need to secure revenue. When put in this way I find myself understanding and in agreement. I think everyone can appreciate the point being made and it just goes to show how reaching out to us and explaining the reasons for etc, goes a long way in creating good will.

I'm excited about CQC coming to the PC because it looks like fun but I can wait.. :) Really enjoying ED these days so thanks to the whole team for all their efforts ;)

As someone who has used a controller from day one I look forward to seeing how it might add to my experience. One of the things I would like is for there to be a sensitivity slider for roll, pitch and yaw.. It would let me use fixed weapons and give me the same degree of fine ship control that those playing with a HOTAS enjoy :)

Same here. Always used a controller and can't see me going back. I have no issues with any of the roles I have chosen so far and welcome any increase in functionality. My main problem is the galaxy map where I have to use the keyboard to type in systems for the search, other than that I don't use the keyboard/mouse in any way.

And the Xbone first part doesn't bother me too much either, I beleive them when they say PC will get the vast majority of exclusive content first. I wouldn't mind if the PS4 gets something first if they release it for the PS4. I personally would love for a WiiU version of Elite and I think that could even push me to buy one. I think the touchpad controller would be excellent, similar to using a pad with roccat power grid built in!

Get ready for more dumbing down of Elite everyone. *sigh*

Such a shame that yet again PC owners and people who supported the game from the start are seeing what Elite was supposed to be get watered down and diluted bit by bit. If it wasn't for us the game wouldn't have got made in the first place, and yet we are the ones who are constantly getting told "we have to release it on consoles if you want everything that was promised" and the whole ethos of Elite is suffering because of it. It's easy to trade without shields now, the damage cost has been nerfed so much to be irrelevant, where's the risk/reward danger? It used to be a real thrill to dock a large trader without shields for fear of losing your profit or worse, or running away when interdicted used to be exciting as every percent of hull damage would be a big cut of your earnings (as it should be!), everything is just so damn easy. Wear and tear, everything is watered down, and we only found out why when it was announced the game was to be released for the consoles. In the entire game I've only lost two ships EVER. Once was a free sidewinder in Beta and once was a basic Viper I tried to take on an Elite Anaconda with just because I got bored of everything being so damn easy. This is just one example of many where the game used to be difficult and challenging but is just without any "danger(ous)" at all now.

Where's the "Dangerous" in Elite FD? It's been ripped out and dumbed down for consoles that's where it's gone.

I own an Xbox One and a 360, a Wii, loads of consoles. Just so you don't think I'm a console hater. I just hate what releasing it for console has done to my beloved Elite. I used to love this game and spent money on it hand over fist with skins etc. to support the team.

Not anymore.

EDIT: Wow... judging by the amount of rep this post is getting from a lot of long time members of this forum, a lot of us seem to feel the same...

That's at last an honest appraisal and would have FD stepped up and put it like this I guess a lot of negative responses could have been avoided. The 'natural fit' et all is just window dressing. XBox first so no pay to win? Fine, that works. Just say it for Pete's sake!

Agreed. The "best fit" thing (while probably still being true) was not the REASON they went this way, the reason was cash - plain and simple. There's nothing wrong with that, FD is a business and as such must show a profit, but when they give us patently transparent "spin" and expect us to believe it they insult our intelligence and sow distrust. They're not a government, why can't they just tell us the truth from the start?

I'm pretty excited about the new controller options that will be making their way back to the PC version. And my old PC I have hooked up in the lounge will be happy about the new optimisations being passed on too. For these I say thanks, Xbox!

<quote>The most obvious benefit comes from the income. We have chosen not to go down the route of subscriptions or ‘pay to win’, but we do need income to support the game, and so far most of that is coming from adding new customers, so it is in all our interests to get more people playing.</quote>

Except he is still pushing the 'because it fits' line for the exclusive deal, not the 'wheelbarrow-full of folding green things from Microsoft'. Going on XBox to add more customers to get more revenue we can understand (even if the need for that extra revenue now seems, er, not well established, when the revenue they have already got for E: D is above their optimistic plan). I still do not believe the 'it fits' as the reason for going onto XBox first, and if it IS true, then we have grounds for complaint. What I do accept is that if they had to give an exclusive to Microsoft, then this is a great fit for that reason. Plus, in any case, since I have no interest in CQC, having an exclusive that I cannot use for 6 months is much, much better than an exclusive I wanted. But, whatever.

Complete stab in the dark here, but I wouldn't be surprised if in the deal with Microsoft, Frontier are not allowed to say anything that could damage Microsoft's image or reputation. While saying "Oh yeah, that XBox timed exclusive? We did that for the huge wad of cash Microsoft gave us" might be being honest, it might also damage Microsoft's image, and thus result in Frontier having to give the money back and no more work from Microsoft.

Just speculating here, I don't actually know.

I disagree about the "experienced user base" (whatever that means).

So you're having trouble understanding that PC players have been playing elite for 6+ months and xbox players maybe a week?

Also the "playing style that consoles generally cater for"... The largest communities for "play a bit turn off" competitive gaming are not even on console... All of the daily players for all COD games from all systems combined does not even equal the daily players of a single particular PC only (soon to xbone too) game.

Looking forward to the optimizations!! I know the game can run smooth as a baby butt for everyone but some of us are getting random stutters that shouldn't be there.

The original Elite was ported to consoles as well. Don't think they were 'dumbed down' Also Elite: Dangerous is and always has been kinda 'dumb' since launch.

Try doing those things in Antal space in open, or fighting in a Violent Protest. Last night in my A grade Python I was handed my backside in under thirty seconds and barely made it out alive.

Ha ! You're right.

I suppose at least they're honest with the money question.

Then again, GW2 manages to be P2P and finance itself via its in-game shop. Why not go down THAT route? Can't be hard to come up with new paint jobs.

Was just about to say the same thing, that FD are probably in a NDA with MS. The alternative is that FD have read the playerbase wrong with regards to our potential feedback. Perhaps they assumed that it would look worse if they said "we've done this because of a deal with Microsoft" instead of "look guys all this cash will help to make a better game" which is essentially what MB is saying - but I don't think that's the case at all and judging by opinions here most people feel the same. No, I still think FD have been told to keep quiet.

Plausible, certainly.

They could still have said something like "We were happy to arrange exclusive content for the XBox, and CQC seemed a good choice for that because ...

I posted a pic of that in this thread a few posts back ... here it is again in case anyone missed it ...

I just want the line of sight radar thats in CQC to be added to the main game!

Also, does this mean less of the exciting telegrams from Michael Brookes too?

This needs to be thought through first. I love the idea too - but in the main game there are huge ships with turrets that aren't meant to keep their targets in front of them by design. There needs to be careful testing it doesn't completely screw over various basic tasks in game.

If they announced CQC for PC first you all would be complaining about that not being a priority.

So what if they are releasing it early on Xbox to make more money? Thats how things work... money talks.

At least they haven't given up on us...
