Windows Direc tX 12?

With windows 10 and DirectX 12 around the corner, is there any information on the benefits PC users might see in Elite Dangerous and will the game be further optimized for DirectX 12?

...any chance on a word from anyone? This guy's posted an intelligent question and it kinda sucks it was buried so fast

It's been discussed before a few times. I believe the consensus was that there was no plans to support it in the short term.

Most recent thread on it was here.

This question has been asked a 100 times on the forum. Continually bumping this thread won't change anything.

Fact is, Windows 10 is not due out until July.
DX12 is only compatible with Windows 10.

This means that there will only be a portion of the playerbase actually utilizing DX12.
So with FD's small development team, I doubt that DX12 is high on their priority list, especially when there are a lot more important things to worry about (Stability issues, Xbone release, CQC update, balance in Powerplay etc)

I wouldn't be surprised if we won't hear anything about DX12 until months after it is actually available.

Besides, there are no other currently released games at this time, that have announced a DX12 integration... not that I know of anyway.
If there are, then it can't be more than a few.

But windows 10 is a free upgrade for most people including those using windows 7 so the majority of people using PC for gaming will have it rather than it just being niche as you imply.

Also, from what I gather, DirectX 12 can have some immediate benefits even on games not specifically designed to utilise it and any word from the devs on possible "out of the box" benefits we might see would also be interesting to read.

Also, since DirectX 12 will have rapid uptake and is an important advancement for gaming it is not unreasonable to expect some word from the devs on future plans they might have that incorporate its features.

Remember developers already have their hands on it.

I'm running ED on Windows 10 with a R9 290. AMD drivers are basically locked to test versions that are controlled by MS. You can install Win 8.1 but they get overridden the next update. Some slowdowns in supercruise, from 60 to lower to mid teens but they clear once you exit. Noticed a bit of tearing last night while docked, went into a menu and it calmed down.

Doesn't mean people will upgrade.

It won't. DirectX12 is practically DirectX11 plus low level access features aka Vulkan/Mantle. Yes, utilizing those low end spec machines could achieve a lot more.

"Will have rapid uptake" is speculation at this point. Microsoft wants it to be rapid uptake. How actually it turns out reminds to be seen.

FD engine team will add DirectX12 support when they will have time. Game, however, I believe, will use DirectX10 API calls for long time if ever.

FD are, presumably, wanting to licence their development system - Cobra - to other developers at some point, if they're not doing it already. Only makes sense to update that if they expect developers to want to use it and ED is a showcase for the tool set, is it not?

The engine Elite uses needs to be completely rewritten for DX12. And the benefit is minimal with the current CPU load.

And only big engines with $$$ will use DX12, the rest will use DX11.3.

Well i hope they do it eventually, i think the places that would benefit the most from it are asteroid rings...the current ones are so thin as to be downright anemic. DX12 could allow FD to make rings that have a lot more asteroids in them, making them better looking and believable.
