Dangers of overplaying ED

I haven't but it causes the much seen outcries, rant, and quit threads here. PP causes much of the obsession to meet deadlines. One day OPEN will be as empty as SOLO due to the GROUP rules players wanting to protect what they have grinded.

Maybe some of us just want there to be fun content that gets us all the way through to the ships that we want? Why does the fun have to stop at the 20m credit mark?

Why is it bad that people want an Anaconda or a Python? These posts never make sense, since they seem to want to dissuade people from ever going beyond the Cobra.

This. Why is it expected (implicitly, or sometimes explicitly) that our favorite ships be small? I like the Python a lot - it's probably my favorite so far. I'm glad I've been able to try out many different ships - but, at times, it was a very barren grind to get there.

There is no way to achieve any of the basic ranks without grinding. There simply isn't enough hours in our life to achieve that if you dont!

Uh, what? You can get any of the ranks with time and patience and without grinding. The only ones that are going to be out of the reach of a casual player is going to be the top rank or two of powerplay due to merit decay. And someone did some maths that showed it would be possible to get rank 4 with a power with just an hours play a day, although if focusing on something so much, then it can become a grind.

Did he mean PowerPlay ranks, or major faction ranks?

Major faction ranks are quite the grind, though the early PP ranks, not so much (as you said).

So far it seems you're in the minority there bud.

Nah. I'm with him there. I haven't set my goal to own every type of ship in the game, in fact I haven't even set myself a goal. I enjoy myself by doing what I want to - a little bounty hunting, a little exploration, a little trading. I haven't set myself a goal to 'achieve' and so I don't feel like I am missing out on anything and it is not a 'griiiiiiiind'.

How many years would it take to become Elite in anything, while playing an hour a day?

+1 Yeahh..I too have 400+ Hours and I do have the majority of the big ships...Hate to say it but not much changes...The only fun I get from this game now is helping people in Eravate (I pop by there in my Conda and help at Conflict Zones if there are any and let them snipe half the credits per kill) or making All Plasma setups...Or All railguns...Or just..Silly things (Like a combat T9 ;) )

As seen here, I think its fun :p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piUSQF-h8jA Recently made a all plasma Python too so yeah..Don't rush to get that Conda..The Python is nice though (I liked alot more then the FDL due to its flexibility)

See now this is fun. That's the reason for the grind IMO.

I also just recently ground out hundreds of millions of credits so I could put all the "I wish I could afford" business behind me and JUST BUY IT BECAUSE IT WOULD BE NEAT. I got to the point where I can afford almost anything in the game I want and now is when I'm having fun.

Play your way definitely applies here. For some it's about the journey, for me it was about crossing the 'finish line' so i can start having fun. I totally understand that to some it seems to defeat the purpose to treat the game as 'work' for a period, but I'm just not capable of seeing games as anything else.

Back in the 80's i played the "Original Elite" on the Commodore 64.
Every spare waking minute went into the game and 10 weeks i was Elite.

Then i played around for a while but with no objective to aim for, i lost direction.
in the end i deleted all my save games and started over & did it all again.
Now i am older and understand its more about the Journey than the destination, think of it as being late for your own funeral...you stopped for some fun along the way :)

I try to mix & match it up in this game, pick up a trading route to follow. Explore systems along the way, stop at a few Nav Beacons for a fight or three.
Take a break at the stations to pick up a mission from the Bulletin Board, become that Gypsy Merchant Warrior/Mercenary, wandering the Galaxy looking for the Mysterious UFO's/Thargoids.

Each of you will choose his/her own path thru the game.
Its an open sandbox game, no right or wrong path to follow.
cheers & Good Luck to you all.

Back in the 80s - if I had been old enough then - I probably would have as well.
Back in the 80s, though, I wouldn't have had 600 unplayed games in my Steam library that I could be spending time on instead.

I suppose this reflects the main issue somewhat: when the original Elite came out, attentions spans were naturally a lot longer. Now, I [speaking just for myself here] have so much choice regarding what to play that grinding for a reward several hundred hours on just doesn't cut it. If the gameplay of getting there isn't fun overall (and there IS fun grinding!) I'll just play something else.

That's not to say ED isn't fun at all - it is. Even the grind is for a while. It just doesn't seem to have a long enough breath to carry me all the way to the next boost of motivation.
